Places to see in ( Barcelona - Spain ) Sant Pau Recinte Modernista
The former Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in the neighborhood of El Guinardó, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, is a complex built between 1901 and 1930, designed by the Catalan modernisme architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Together with Palau de la Música Catalana, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It was a fully functioning hospital until June 2009, when the new hospital opened next to it, before undergoing restoration for use as a museum and cultural center, which opened in 2014.
Although the hospital's current buildings date from the 20th century, the Hospital de la Santa Creu (the last part of its name, Sant Pau, was added in honour of the banker, Pau Gil, who paid the new buildings in the twentieth century) was founded in 1401 when six small medieval hospitals merged. The hospital's former buildings near the center of Barcelona date from the 15th century, and now house an art school (Escola Massana) and Biblioteca de Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia).
In 1991, the hospital was awarded St. George's Cross by the Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2003, a new hospital building was erected to the north of the Domènech i Montaner's Modernista pavilions were almost all departments moved out. However, few departments such as the Blood and Tissue Bank, the radiography department and the physical therapist department remain in some of the old buildings.

The English concept of modernism corresponds to the French concept of modernity even if we translate the English word sometimes by modernism. Modernism is then taken in a restricted sense as a specific current to the art of the xx th century found its apogee during the First World War or in the following years and would expire in the years 1930 or otherwise in years 1950 and even later. Then pass from modernism to postmodernism. The word modernism mainly used in the 1960 retrospectively designate this period.
The Catalan Modernism is an artistic movement original Catalan follows the trend of Art Nouveau in Europe and in the continuity of the Catalan renaissance. The Catalan modernism flourished mainly, especially in decorative arts (architecture and interior design), for half a century between 1880 and 1930. It was strongly supported by the cultivated Catalan bourgeoisie who, by his patronage, and wanted to satisfy his modern impetus express its Catalan identity and demonstrate his wealth and distinction.
The Catalan modernism also influenced other areas of Spain have experienced, such as Catalonia, an important economic development in the early xx th century, like Cartagena, where the architect Víctor Beltrí conducted several modernist buildings. Modernism is an urban, bourgeois style. This was also an international movement and known by different names in Europe: Art Nouveau in France and Belgium, Modern Style or Glasgow Style in Scotland and the UK, Jugendstil in Germany, Sezession in Austria, Liberty in Italy, etc.
All over the world, and particularly in Catalonia, Modernism was the freedom to create new forms which had been previously rejected by the academy. In architecture, it is conventional to consider that the Catalan modernism begins in 1888, the year of the first World Exhibition in Barcelona, but the beginnings of modernism are found in 1871 in the course of the new Barcelona Provincial School of Architecture that was headed by Elies Rogent i Amat (1821-1897) and in the works of Josep Domenech i Estapà - despite himself, as explicitly refused to follow modernism.
In Spain, specifically in Catalonia, the movement bears the name of Catalan modernism. It is built in the 1870s on the conjunction of several factors: the artistic renovation in parallel with other contemporary arts, the search for new formal expressions and the desire to be in a Europe-wide modernity.
In architecture, the beginnings of Art Nouveau - called modernism Catalan - are found in 1871 in the course of the new Barcelona Provincial School of Architecture, which was headed by Elies Rogent i Amat (1821-1897) and the works of Josep Domenech i Estapà - despite himself, as explicitly refused this movement.
The art of jewelery has been revitalized by the new art, the main source of inspiration is nature. This renovation was completed by the virtuosity achieved in the work of the enamel and new materials such as opal and other gemstones. The first city is home to monuments of Catalan modernism architect Antoni Gaudi and Lluis Domenech i Montaner. For the former it is the Parc Güell, the Palau Güell, the Casa Mila, the Casa Vicens, Gaudí's work on the facade of the Nativity and the crypt of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, the Casa Batllo and the Church of Colònia Güell. For the second, it is the Hospital de Sant Pau and Palau de la Música Catalana.
Modernism disappears completely during the third decade of the xx th century, as happened previously in the Art Nouveau in Europe. Among the causes of this decline, there is trouble with the standardization requirements that were requested by the modern industrial production as well as social housing, the impact of avant-garde artists of the early xx th century.
In the Catalan modernism succeeded noucentisme and architectural rationalism decades 1920 and 1930. In addition to the techniques, the possibilities offered by new materials and decoration were now linked to an international modern style that concentrates its efforts on the creation of a unity between technique, form and ornamentation, as opposed to the roots of Catalan modernism.
Rusiñol and Casas were the big names of this current. In addition to being a painter, Rusiñol was also a great prose writer - playwright and journalist - very popular with a wide audience, and great theorist of cultural modernity in Catalonia at the time. When someone referred to modernism, he joked in calling him the party.

Places to see in ( Barcelona - Spain ) Casa Amatller
Places to see in ( Barcelona - Spain ) Casa Amatller
Casa Amatller is a building in the Modernisme style in Barcelona, designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Along with Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó-Morera, it makes up the three most important buildings in Barcelona's famous Illa de la Discòrdia (Block of Discord), noted for its unique modernist buildings.
The building was originally designed as a residence for chocolatier Antoni Amatller and was constructed between 1898 and 1900. This amazing building, the Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, a contemporary of Gaudí, which combines the neo-Gothic style with a ridged façade inspired by houses in the Netherlands, is part of the block known as the mansana de la discòrdia of Barcelona. The architect worked with some of the finest artists and craftsmen in Barcelona of the modersnista times, headed by the sculptors Eusebi Arnau and Alfons Jujol.
The Casa Amatller, together with the adjacent Casa Batlló, designed by Gaudí, and the Casa Lleó Morera, by Domènech i Montaner, is part of the mansana de la discòrdia or block of discord of Barcelona, so-named because it features buildings in sharply contrasting styles. Curiously, none of these houses was newly built; all three of them are refurbishments of already existing buildings, the Casa Amatller being the first. The original building was constructed by Antoni Robert in 1875, and in 1898 the Amatller family commissioned the Catalan architect and politician Josep Puig i Cadafalch (1867-1956) to refurbish the building. The current building dates from his rose or modernista period, which includes buildings such as the Casa Macaya and the Casa de les Punxes, the House of Spikes.
The architect based his design on the typical Catalan mansion and incorporated Germanic elements. In the case of the Casa Amatller of Barcelona, the basic layout is the typical urban Gothic dwelling. This means that what is really a block of flats looks like a single palazzo, an impression accentuated by the delicate porticoes on the balconies on the first floor. The Germanic element is the bold ridged cornice, highlighted with ceramic tiles. You can visit the caretaker's office, which has survived intact and contains one of the finest stained-glass windows of the modernista era. The Casa Amatller is currently offering guided visits aimed at disseminating and developing the history of art in the city of Barcelona.
