Գյումրի (ի սկզբանե Կումայրի, հետագայում մինչև 1840 թվականը՝ Գյումրի, 1840-1924 թթ.-ին՝ Ալեքսանդրապոլ, 1924-1990 թթ.-ին՝ Լենինական, 1990-1992 թթ.-ին Կումայրի), բնակչության քանակով ու մշակութային նշանակությամբ Հայաստանի երկրորդ քաղաքն է, գտնվում է հյուսիսարևմտյան մասում՝ Շիրակի մարզում, Ախուրյան գետի ձախ ափին, Երևանից 126 կմ հեռավորության վրա։ Տարածքը՝ 3626 հա։
2015 թ. դրությամբ ունեցել է 118, 6 հազար բնակիչ, ծովի մակարդակից բարձր է ավելի քան 1500 մ։
Քաղաքի կարգավիճակ ունի 1837 թ․-ից։
Արևմտյան մասը բարձրադիր է՝ կազմված երկու սեղանաձև բարձունքներից։
Ռելիեֆը հարթավայրային է, քիչ մասնատված, ծածկված 300 - 350 մ հաստությամբ լճագետային ու հրաբխային նստվածքներով։ Կլիման ցամաքային է, համեմատաբար տաք ամառներով ու ցուրտ ձմեռներով։ Տարեկան միջին ջերմաստիճանը 7 °C է, հունվարինը՝ - 8 °C (նվազագույնը՝ - 35 °C), հուլիսինը՝ 20 °C (առավելագույնը՝ 34 °C)։
Տարեկան տեղումները 500 մմ են։ Գտնվում է 8-9 բալանոց սեյսմիկ գոտում։
Վերջին ուժեղ երկրաշարժը տեղի է ունեցել 1988 թ. դեկտեմբերի 7-ին։
Նախորդ երկրաշարժը տեղի է ունեցել 1926 թ. հոկտեմբերի 22-ին։

Gyumri - The Holy Martyrs & The Wonderworker
We went to Gyumri, which named Leninakan during the Soviet era and must have been a busy place some time ago. Our travelling group visited the local Caritas organisation and learned about the earthquake that shook Gyumri some time ago. Steph and I decided to explore the city on foot instead.
We visited the Church of the Holy Martyrs as well as the Dzitoghtsyan Museum of Social Life & National Architecture which is an old mansion, that contains housing collections related to both historical facts and the everyday-life of Gyumri as well as paintings & other art work.
We also walked to the Russian orthodox church Saint Nicolai the Wonderworker where we saw the Black Fortress Sev Berd from some distance.
Afterwards we walked over the local market, bought some dried fruit and had dinner outside in a nice restaurant near the road.

These videos are dedicated to our tour guides Harry and Mariam, my girlfriend Stephanie, our travelling companions and all of our families. They are meant to document our journey and the people we had the pleasure to meet in Armenia. Since 2009, the school has received from IGEFA furniture, equipment, art supplies, books, and video materials, as well as computers, a color printer, a scanner, DVDs and a TV from IGEFA.

1. Yerevan
Yerevan is the capital and largest city in Armenia. It dates back to the 8th century BC! It’s also the heart of the country. Check out Vernissage Market for handicrafts and Gum Market for great food! Don’t miss the amazing Megerian Carpet Museum!
2. Geghard
Geghard is a medieval monastery about an hour from Yerevan. It dates back to the 4th century and partially carved out of the nearby mountain. It was once home to the spear that pierced Jesus Christ’s side during the Crucifixion!
3. Garni
Next is Garni, a village where you can make your own lavash! Its most notable site is Temple of Garni, which dates back to the first century AD. It’s one of the best-known pre-Christian symbols of Armenia and is a great example of classical Greek architecture!
4. Etchmiadzin
Etchmiadzin is considered a holy city and Armenia’s spiritual capital. It’s home to some of the oldest churches and cathedrals on Earth, including five that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. While you’re in town, try some fish that’s cooked by using the light of the sun!
5. Lake Sevan
Lake Sevan is Armenia’s largest body of water. It’s a major source of food for Armenians and is also home to Sevanavak, a medieval monastery that dates back to 874!
6. Dilijan
Dilijan is a town in northern Armenia that’s known for its traditional craft workshops and spa resorts. It’s surrounded by forests and is also known for its traditional architecture.
7. Apaga Resort
Apaga Resort is a beautiful accommodation that consists of authentic cottages with 22 rooms and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. While you’re there, you can do extreme activities like zip-lining and off-roading!
8. Gyumri
Armenia’s second-largest city, Gyumri, is known as the arts and crafts center of Armenia. workshops and watching the artisans create beautiful pottery, carvings, and other crafts. It’s also home to monasteries, churches, and museums.
9. Areni
If you’re into wine, you have to visit Areni. The oldest winery in the world was discovered in a cave complex nearby, and the village hosts the annual Areni Wine Festival every October!
10. Tatev Monastery
Tatev Monastery is a beautiful, 9th-century Armenian Apostolic monastery that once hosted the University of Tatev. You can also ride the world’s longest reversible cable car and get amazing views of the area!
BONUS: Old Khndzoresk Cave Village
Known as the Cappadocia of Armenia, Old Khndzoresk Cave Village is an ancient village that was carved into the hillsides of a gorge. People lived there as recently as the 1950s! The complex includes three schools and even two churches!

The Hovhannes Shiraz House Museum is located in Gyumri, Shirak Province, Armenia, and here are parts of his life, such as the home furnishings, pictures of his mother and shown by him and then also various books he has written. He was born on April 27, 1915 in Alexandropol (now Gyumri), Russian Empire (now Armenia) and died on March 14, 1984 in Yerevan, Soviet Armenia (now Armenia). He was a well-known Armenian poet. It is recommended to have a guide or interpreter with you, as unfortunately there are only guides and explanations in Russian and Armenian. But a visit is recommended and also very interesting.
Das Hovhannes Shiraz Haus Museum befindet sich in Gjumri,Shirak Provinz, Armenien und hier werden Teile seines Lebens, wie zum Beispiel die Wohnungseinrichtung, Bilder seiner Mutter und von ihm gezeigt und dann auch noch verschiedene Bücher die er geschrieben hat. Er wurde am 27. April 1915 in Alexandropol (jetzt Gjumri), russisches Reich (jetzt Armenien) geboren und ist am 14. März 1984 ín Eriwan, Sowjet Armenien (jetzt Armenien) gestorben. Er war ein sehr bekannter armenischer Poet. Es ist empfehlenswert, wenn man einen Reiseführer bzw. Dolmetscher bei der Besichtigung dabei hat, da es leider nur Führungen und Erklärungen in russisch und armenisch gibt. Aber eine Besichtigung ist empfehlenswert und auch sehr interessant.
