Tom & Tanya Explore Natural History Museum Funchal
Opened in 1929, the natural history museum is housed in the landmark Palace of Saint Peter just a short walk from Funchal city centre. It houses more than 41,000 varieties of animal species and is the oldest museum in the Madeira Islands. The collection has species of fish, birds, sea and land mammals, marine reptiles, insects, and other invertebrates, plants and a representative collection of rocks and minerals from the archipelago, as well as marine fossils from Porto Santo. The Municipal Aquarium, located on the ground floor of São Pedro Palace has 15 display tanks, where the most important elements of the coastal marine fauna of Madeira are represented.
The building São Pedro Palace itself is of historical and architectural importance. It was built by order of the Madeiran Carvalhal family in the mid eighteenth century.
The Natural History Museum is a hidden gem. It is well worth visiting. We were very impressed.

Madeira (Portugal) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Vacation travel video about destination Madeira in Portugal.
Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Museum Of Religious Art is to be found in the former bishop’s palace. The sugar trade with Antwerp meant that paintings and other works of art could be used as payment. Madeira has long been famous for its wine, stored in wooden barrels to mature and then exported all over the world. In the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, matured and celebrated. At the beginning of a valley, São Vicente lies hidden beyond the steep slopes of the northern coastline. The tastefully restored centre of the village contains a seventeenth century church with a Baroque interior. There are gilded carvings, tile pictures and paintings on the altar. At an amazing acute angle, the gondola from the mountain station below the village of Achadas Da Cruz travels three hundred metres down to the coast and back. This most beautiful Baroque church on the north coast was established in São Jorge. Its external simplicity gives little hint of its internal beauty: gilded wood carvings and illusionist paintings adorn the church and its altar. To the east of Madeira is the natural bay of Machico, the oldest settlement on the island. Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Its extraordinary landscapes and exotic fragrances have been captivating visitors for centuries. Madeira, wild beauty amid the Atlantic Ocean!

Funchal, Madeira, Portugal - city tour
Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira. It has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries. Because of its high cultural and historical value, Funchal is one of Portugal's main tourist attractions. It is also popular as a destination for New Year's Eve, and it is the leading Portuguese port on cruise liner dockings.
The name is from the Portuguese word funcho (fennel) and the suffix -al, to denote a plantation of fennel.
Today Funchal is a major tourist town, with hotels, port, and an international airport Funchal Airport (FNC), located in the nearby municipality of Santa Cruz.
Besides the city of Funchal, tourist destinations include: Ribeira Brava, Curral das Freiras, Porto Moniz, Santana, the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO Natural Site, in the center of Madeira Island and the beaches in Porto Santo island. There is also a passenger gondola lift (Funchal Cable Car), that transports people from the lower section of the city to the suburb of Monte and another that runs between Monte and the Botanical Gardens.

Pushed up by volcanic forces from the seafloor, #MadeiraIsland is a wonderful #vacation #destination. Volcanic activity settled millennia ago, yet the island’s rich soils and spring climate means Madeira explodes in lush vegetation all year round.
#Visit Madeira’s capital, Funchal. Walk streets paved with patterned stonework and #explore centuries-old churches and homes, which have endured pirate raids, German U-boat attacks, and earthquakes.
Head to Cabo Girão, one of the world’s mightiest cliffs. At Garajau, watch divers far below enjoying the undersea gardens of the marine reserve.
Madeira’s ring road strings together coastal towns and beaches, each one a little different from the last. Madeira’s northern coastline offers plenty of drama and adventure too.
Explore Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third-highest peak. From here, experienced hikers can follow knife-edged trails to even higher peaks, the same peaks that guided Portuguese mariners to Madeira six centuries ago.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Funchal – Europe’s most picturesque capital.
The Funchal city of today is very different from its fennel growing, pirate days of old. It is in fact a modern, cosmopolitan, rejuvenated city, well known for its many top class restaurants, stunning new 4 & 5 star hotels and warm all year round climate and of course its most famous export, world class footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Tom & Tanya Visit Madeira Botanical Gardens
We are on holiday in lovely Madeira. After taking 2 cable car trips we finally arrive at the fabulous Madeira Botanical Gardens that overlook the port city of Funchal. If you love nature, walking and gardening/gardens then this is a trip not to be missed.
Located at about three miles above the town center of Funchal, this park was inaugurated in 1960 on the grounds of Quinta do Bom Sucesso, previously owned by the Reid´s family.
The “Jardim Botânico” (Botanical Gardens) in Funchal displays over two thousand exotic plants both endemic and from all over the world such as Orchids, Magnolias, Azaleas, Palms, Ferns and Cacti. Although a botanical garden is a beautiful place that exposes colour and fragrance, it is also a place of science and culture.
One of the most beautiful gardens in the region, with marvellous views overlooking the city of Funchal, the Madeira Botanical Garden is located on one of the most peculiar estates in the city, the Bom Sucesso Estate. The estate dates from 1881 and was created by the Reid family as their private park.
Today the property is open to the public. The garden covers an area of 80,000 m² and is home to a fascinating collection of a wide variety of plants. It also has an area dedicated to research and conservation.
In addition to all these attractions, the Botanical Garden also has a Museum of Natural History, and there is a cable car that connects it to Monte Parish.

Within the “Jardim Botânico” there is a small Natural History Museum displaying collections of birds, fossils, rocks, minerals, animals, invertebrates and other vertebrates, an Amphitheatre, Louro Bird Park, a terrace café and a belvedere which shows off a fantastic view of Funchal.
