It’s About Time | Jim Egan | TEDxNewport
Jim’s talk, “”It’s About Time”, explores the intricate design of the Tower and the truth it reveals about pivotal moments in American history.
Jim Egan is a historian, prolific author, and business owner who has lived in Newport for the last 10 years. He has a B.A. in Business and Art from Franklin & Marshall College and ran a professional photography business in Providence for 30 years. Jim discovered the mysterious Elizabethan-era origins of the Newport Tower in Touro Park and has written 20 books on the topic. He opened the Newport Tower Museum on Mill Street in 2009, and as curator, he’s shared the story with visitors from every state in the US and every country in Europe. Grant's Getaways: Most Dangerous Bar
It's one of the most dangerous places on the planet and the Columbia River Bar is often termed the Graveyard of the Pacific. Here, the wind, weather and ocean conditions can change in a heartbeat and it becomes a place where mistakes can mean disaster. In nearby Astoria, visitors gain a new respect for the dangerous bar indoors on a visit to the Columbia River Maritime Museum. The center tells many stories that surround the place where the mighty Columbia meets the sea; historic tales of development following Lewis and Clark's exploration -- the transport of goods, the salmon fishing industries, the timber mill industries, the US Coast Guard -- Oregon history is are all here and set against the dramatic backdrop of the Columbia River.
Living in Newport Beach: the Dory Fishing Fleet
Beside the Newport Pier, the Dory Fishing Fleet is still going strong -- since 1891! It has been designated a historical landmark by the Newport Beach Historical Society. You can still buy fish from next to the pier, at the Dory Fishing Fleet Market--if you do go, show up early in the morning; they sell out fast!

Newport 1937
This is an amateur America Cup film of the August 9, 1937 preparations for the America’s Cup Race off Newport, R. I. made by my grandfather Ralph U. Heninger using a hand held Kodak 8mm movie camera and color film. This film was photographed by him aboard the “ROZZY” a 1929 40’ cruiser owned by Irving Jennings (my grandmother sister’s husband) prior to the race between the American boat “Ranger” and the English boat “Endeavor II”. My grandfather told me years ago several of the large yachts in the film watching the America Cup boats were “conscripted” in the 1940’s during WW II by the United States Coast Guard for patrols off the East Coast

US Route 20 comes to Gordon, NE
From 1989 to 1995, artists Jan Albers and Karen Titus took photographs and interviewed people they encountered along U.S. Route 20, the longest transcontinental highway in the United States. Reaching 3,365 miles from coast to coast, it begins in Boston, Massachusetts, and continues through 12 states, ending at the Pacific Ocean in Newport, Oregon. During their journey, Albers and Titus (who are also mother and daughter) documented sites, events, and stories of people who live and work along this road. Photographs from the road by Albers and Titus will be on view in the exhibition 20/20 Vision: Travels Along America's Accidental Highway at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana, June 3 - July 16, 2011.
In 1990, Jan Albers interviewed Caroline Santoz Pfiffer, who lived on a back road off of U.S. Route 20 outside of Gordon, Nebraska. Jan Albers had to nudge cows off of the road to get to Pfiffer's home. The downstairs of her home was a museum to Pfiffer's sister, Mari Santoz (1896-1966) who left the area for New York and became a well-known writer. Pfiffer was in her 80s at the time of the interview. She talked about the history of the area, the importance of the railroad and her memories of when U.S. Route 20 was built.

Minute Tours - Boscobel House and Gardens
For the first installment in a segment called 'Minute Tours,' we take a quick look at Boscobel House and Gardens, located in Garrison, NY.
I got a chance to stop by and check out the gardens, and the Make-Do Exhibit in the house. It's definitely worth a short day trip if you are within driving distance.

Its Neoclassical mansion holds an exceptional collection of New York furniture from the Federal period. American History : The Life of Mountain Men
A mountain man is an explorer who lives in the wilderness. Mountain men were most common in the North American Rocky Mountains from about 1810 through to the 1880s (with a peak population in the early 1840s). They were instrumental in opening up the various Emigrant Trails (widened into wagon roads) allowing Americans in the east to settle the new territories of the far west by organized wagon trains traveling over roads explored and in many cases, physically improved by the mountain men and the big fur companies originally to serve the mule train based inland fur trade.
They arose in a natural geographic and economic expansion driven by the lucrative earnings available in the North American fur trade, in the wake of the various 1806–07 published accounts of the Lewis and Clark expeditions' (1803–1806) findings about the Rockies and the (ownership-disputed) Oregon Country where they flourished economically for over three decades. By the time two new international treaties in early 1846 and early 1848 officially settled new western coastal territories in the United States and spurred a large upsurge in migration, the days of mountain men making a good living by fur trapping had largely ended. This was partly because the fur industry was failing due to reduced demand and over trapping. With the rise of the silk trade and quick collapse of the North American beaver-based fur trade in the later 1830s–1840s, many of the mountain men settled into jobs as Army Scouts or wagon train guides or settled throughout the lands which they had helped open up. Others, like William Sublette, opened up fort-trading posts along the Oregon Trail to service the remnant fur trade and the settlers heading west.

Jason and his brother Jeffrey wrap up their trip to Maine with a glimpse of a bird that's almost never been spotted in the United States: the Great Black Hawk, a native of Central and South America.
Subscribe to Topic:
Jason Ward has been an avid birdwatcher since he was a kid growing up in the Bronx, where he spotted a peregrine falcon eating a pigeon on a ledge outside his bedroom window. In the first season of Topic's new series, the avian advocate and father of two travels around the Northeast, from Cape May, New Jersey, to Maine, delighting audiences with his contagious curiosity about the natural world—and the creatures within it. Those creatures include those of the human variety, too, with guests such as comedian Wyatt Cenac, Dr. Drew Lanham of Clemson University, “The Birdist” Nicholas Lund, the American Museum of Natural History’s Paul Sweet, and the Feminist Bird Club. (Plus Jason’s younger brother Jeffrey, a fellow birder and formidable opponent in the brothers' annual bird count competition.) Get your binoculars ready.

Baker Heritage Museum, Baker City, Oregon (2018)
The Baker Heritage Museum is located in Baker City, Oregon. This Museum is well laid out with lots of very interesting and informative displays that cover the history of the region. There is a massive rock collection. As well as a very extensive collection of memorabilia for the 'Paint Your Wagon' movie. This was the only movie that I have seen that has Clint Eastwood singing in it.
