The Cathedral Museum in Florence
Although not one of the most famous museums in Florence, Museo del'Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore is definitely one of the most important, displaying a variety of church art from Florence throughout the ages.
The new Cathedral Works Museum (Museo dell’Opera del Duomo), Florence
Florence’s Opera del Duomo Museum will reopen its doors on October 29, ahead of Pope Francis’s scheduled visit to the city in early November 2015.

The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (English: Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower) is the main church of Florence, Italy. The Duomo, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.
The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. The three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction to tourists visiting the region of Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.
The cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence, whose archbishop is currently Giuseppe Betori.
The original façade, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and usually attributed to Giotto, was actually begun twenty years after Giotto's death.[citation needed] A mid-15th century pen-and-ink drawing of this so-called Giotto's façade is visible in the Codex Rustici, and in the drawing of Bernardino Poccetti in 1587, both on display in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo. This façade was the collective work of several artists, among them Andrea Orcagna and Taddeo Gaddi. This original façade was only completed in its lower portion and then left unfinished. It was dismantled in 1587-1588 by the Medici court architect Bernardo Buontalenti, ordered by Grand Duke Francesco I de' Medici, as it appeared totally outmoded in Renaissance times. Some of the original sculptures are on display in the Museum Opera del Duomo, behind the cathedral. Others are now in the Berlin Museum and in the Louvre. The competition for a new façade turned into a huge corruption scandal. The wooden model for the façade of Buontalenti is on display in the Museum Opera del Duomo. A few new designs had been proposed in later years but the models (of Giovanni Antonio Dosio, Giovanni de' Medici with Alessandro Pieroni and Giambologna) were not accepted. The façade was then left bare until the 19th century.
In 1864, a competition was held to design a new façade and was won by Emilio De Fabris (1808--1883) in 1871. Work began in 1876 and completed in 1887. This neo-gothic façade in white, green and red marble forms a harmonious entity with the cathedral, Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery, but some think it is excessively decorated.
The whole façade is dedicated to the Mother of Christ. (From Wikipedia)

Italy, Florence - Baptistery - Baptistery of Saint John
Photographer:Samuel Magal (samuel@sites-and-photos.com)
The Baptistry is one of the oldest buildings in the city, constructed between 1059 and 1128 in the Florentine Romanesque style. Although the Florentine style did not spread across Italy as widely as the Pisan Romanesque or Lombard styles, its influence was decisive for the subsequent development of architecture, as it formed the basis from which Francesco Talenti, Leon Battista Alberti, Filippo Brunelleschi, and other master architects of their time created Renaissance architecture.

Gates of Paradise, Museum of the Works of the Cathedral, Florence, Italy, Europe
The Gates of Paradise is the east door of the Baptistery of Florence, the main one located in front of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Made by the goldsmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti between 1425 and 1452 is his masterpiece and one of the most famous works of the Florentine Renaissance. Completely golden, was nicknamed Paradise by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The original panels by the flood of Florence, after having been subjected to restoration, are preserved in the nearby Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. Its reconstruction has recently worked the well-known carpenter Private William Christopher. The first two bronze doors of the Baptistry , facing the cathedral, were made by Andrea Pisano and installed in 1336 (Stories of St John the Baptist) . Lorenzo Ghiberti had concluded that the port is located on the north side in 1424 , the one that was born from the famous contest of the panels which were also attended by Filippo Brunelleschi. Workers of the Cathedral , very satisfied with the result, in 1424 they decided to place the new door of the main entrance of the Baptistery , moving the fourteenth-century door on the south side . With an unusual procedure , it was decided to entrust immediately, without contest, the task of creating the third door to Ghiberti , who had just returned from a stay in Venice. The artist was given the freedom of interpretation of the theme , which was to cover a series of scenes from the Old Testament chosen by Leonardo Bruni, chancellor of the Republic and the end humanist. Initially the scheme was expected to be very similar to other ports, with twenty-eight panels including eight in the two lower rows , reserved for single figures of prophets. The idea of creating something new happened in the course of work , so much so that the pattern at twenty-eight squares centered studs is still visible on the back side of the door. The complex meanings on multiple levels, are transposed in a simple but very well read , with characters that move with ease in the backgrounds and a wide profusion of quotes ranging from classical to Gothic . In the foreground are usually figures in high relief , more and more squeezed by hand to hand we proceed in the plans in depth, with the eye conducted in-depth transitions from lightweight space, exploiting the full potential illusionistic stiacciato. The prospect of merging the various episodes , but it is never strictly applied , going only to the extent that it creates a clearly defined and unified, focusing on the narrative clarity. There remains , however, a late Gothic taste of nature, attention to minute detail , in defining figures with wavy lines and elegant, the variety of plants and animals depicted, and so on. The language is so captivating , free from harshness and updated to the modern style , but not in a revolutionary canon , but rather to mediation , which guaranteed Ghiberti a wide and immediate dissemination.
