RUSSIA: VALDAI: NUCLEAR MISSILE BASE TURNED INTO A MUSEUM
Russian/Nat
It was once the Soviet Union's largest nuclear missile base, capable of destroying major cities in the West.
Then disarmament stripped rocket base number 6, Valdai division, of its deadly weapons and launch silos.
But one silo was preserved and along with the nuclear control centre has been turned into a museum to the Cold War.
It's the height of the Cold War and at the Soviet Union's biggest nuclear weapons base, 460 kilometres north of Moscow, guards have been alerted by an intruder.
Even if trespassers had managed to scale the complicated network of electric fences without coming to harm, they would have probably been shot on sight.
As the core of the country's first strike capability for decades it was a no-go area for everyone except authorised personnel.
Now following nuclear disarmament even foreigners are welcomed to what is believed to be the first Cold War museum located in a former front line position.
Anyone who can afford the two-hundred U-S dollar entrance fee can descend 40 metres underground to the central control room and press a launch button which would have once prompted the start of Armageddon.
Three officers from the elite Rocket regiment would have sat here, round the clock, ready for the order to launch any or all of the 110 Satan missiles located in the vicinity.
Each missile carried ten nuclear warheads targetted at NATO countries.
Major Alexander Finyunov worked here for 26 years.
Now he conducts tours around the base.
He believes the museum is a monument to human achievement.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We have to preserve it because there's not too many places like this in the world. The whole country was working to create this. The labour of millions of people went into this - the whole of the Soviet Union not only Russia - it was the pinnacle of our industrial achievement.
SUPER CAPTION: Major Alexander Finyov, Retired missile unit officer
The base is located far from civilisation, in the middle of a national park.
As the place was being disarmed and the silos destroyed under the provisions of the START II treaty, the park director Alexander Glazov hit upon the idea of setting up the Cold War museum.
In 1994 the Ministry of Defence handed over to Glazov one of the silos and the command centre.
He believes it will not only be a history lesson for future generations but also a deterrent.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I want it to show how wrong it was to build all this for the high-tech destruction of people. Too much money and effort was spent on destroying each other. Thank God the Cold War has ended and my only wish is that there won't be any more wars - cold or hot.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexander Glazov, Head of Valdai National Park
But the base is rundown - water seeps through its underground tunnels, pipes are rusting and the Ministry of Defence has removed a lot of the top secret equipment.
Although the government gives it financial help it's not enough to restore the base to its former glory.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
It's very expensive to maintain, it uses a lot of energy. This museum has to be treated the way you treat the Hermitage, the Tretyakov and the Russian Museum. There they have art but here we have technical art.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexander Glazov, Head of Valdai National Park
Few Russians have visited this hands-on museum and the number of foreign tourists has so far been negligable.
What was once a top military secret in the Soviet Union is now one of Russia's best kept tourist secrets.
Few people outside of the National Park are aware of the base and without the necessary funding to promote it, the museum, like the Cold War, will be relegated to the pages of history.

Museum of Ukrainian History | Virtual Museum Tour
Today it is the main museum of the country, which preserves more than 800,000 exhibits of the most different styles. Slightly more than a century ago it was just the Museum of Antiquities and Arts, featuring an archaeological exhibition. During its existence, the institution has changed three locations and was renamed 10 times. After almost 90 years, the Kyiv Art-Industrial and Scientific Museum of Emperor Nikolai Aleksandrovich became the National Museum of History of Ukraine.

Russian Art - 1 Architecture: Kievan Rus' Period
First video about the Russian Art serie. Any doubt? Send me a message.
Historia del Arte:
Land of the Art:
Russian culture is an hybrid generated from habits of many civilizations that shaped this great multicultural state, and it is the result of its development for several centuries, being deeply rooted in the culture of the first eastern slavs.
The Kievan Rus' is the ancient state formed by the slav tribes of the actuals Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. This artistic period is between 988-1230. The great churches were built after the adoption of christianism. The style is similar to the byzantine. These orthodox churches were built mainly of wood.
Saint Sophia of Novgorod: already mentioned in byzantine art. It has five stone domes. It was built by Vladimir of Novgorod in honor to his father, Yaroslav I the Wise, as a sign of gratitude of the people of Novgorod for his help in the conflict of Yaroslav in the Kievan Rus'.
Yuriev Monastery: also called St. George Cathedral, was built by prince Vsevolod Mstislavovich. It has narrow windows and frescoes in the interior depicting the prince. It is one of the biggest buildings of Novgorod.
Golden Gate of Vladimir: this is the only thing that survived after the siege of the mongols. It is said that in XVIII century, Catherine II the Great was scared to go through it fearing that it could fall. The vaults and the barbican were destroyed and were built two circled towers.
Church of the Intercession on River Nerl: built with white stone, it has a dome with four columns in the interior. Elongated proportions with dark interior. Built by Andréi Bogoliubski to commemorate his son, who was murdered. In spring it is flooded and it seems it is floating.
Dormition Cathedral of Vladimir: also called of the Intercession, was commissioned by Andrei Bogoliubski for Virgin Mary, saint patron of Vladimir.
Kiev Pechersk Lavra: I added this complex too, also called Kiev Monastery of the Caves. The beginning is in 1051 in the reign of Yaroslavl I. The princes of Kiev supported the construction. It has many buildings, among them, I also added the Dormition cathedral. Soon it will be the most important building of Kievan Rus'.

Ukrainian Art: Kazimir Malevich (1879, Kyiv)
Kazymyr Malevych (more known as Kazimir Malevich) was a Modern Ukrainian visual artist who was born in 1879. Kazimir Malevich has had numerous gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Stedelijk Museum and at the Rijksmuseum. Numerous works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'Suprematist Composition' sold at Sotheby's New York in 2008 for $60002500. The artist died in 1935.
As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Malevich's birth in Ukraine, it is timely that we also take a closer look at the history of Ukrainian modern art and what it had to offer its own native son. By considering Malevich's art in line with the activities of contemporary Ukrainian painters, we are able to add yet another layer of understanding to the creative processes of this complex figure of modern art.

Beyond the barricades and battles in Kyiv - the art of Ukraine - le mag
Artists in Ukraine have captured their stories of the conflict in their country on canvas.
Some set up temporary studios at the centre of the protests in Independence Square to paint each historic moment in their art.
Marina Sochenko is one of them. Protesting and painting has filled her days, sometimes she has done both at the same time.
Her subjects used to be flowers but after taking part in a protest with her son her art changed. She became obsessed with capturing every aspect of the re...

VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:
Art works seized at the residence of ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych were on display to reporters at Kiev's National Art Museum on Friday, a day ahead of opening to the public.
Items from the former president's vast art collection, including sculptures and photos of himself, valuable icons and paintings, books, weapons and furnishings are now at the National Art Museum in Kiev.
They were taken from Yanukovich's Mezhyhiria palatial compound after his flight to Russia in February.
One of the paintings - Christ and Sinner Woman by Russian artist Vasily Polenov - was sold at auction at London's Bonhams in 2011 for over six million dollars.
Ukraine is going through its biggest political crisis since the fall of Soviet Union, set off by months-long anti-government protests and President Viktor Yanukovych's flight to Russia.
Yanukovych's ouster sparked wide anger in his support base in Ukraine's east.
The separatists, who claim Ukraine's post-Yanukovych government consists of nationalists who will suppress the east's large Russian-speaking population, are demanding regional autonomy or even annexation by Russia.

Ukraine’s open air museum
At a time when Ukraine is trying to rid itself of Soviet-era symbols, one businessman in Kiev is doing the opposite. He's recapturing the country's Communist past by restoring statues of former Soviet leaders like Lenin and Stalin. For him it's not an act of defiance, but rather a purely money-making exercise.

Kyiv Travel Guide - Explore best things to do in Kyiv
This Kiev Travel Guide is your way to explore best things to do in Kiev Ukraine. It is customized to take you in Kiev city tour to show you Kiev scenery and Kiev nightlife. Kiev travel video will ensure you enjoy some of its best Ukraine Charm.
#Kiev or #Kyiv is the capital and most populous city of #Ukraine and it is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural center of Eastern #Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions, and historical landmarks. The city has an extensive system of public transport and infrastructure, including the Kiev Metro.
Kiev's most famous historical architecture complexes are the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), which are recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Noteworthy historical architectural landmarks also include the Mariyinsky Palace (designed and constructed from 1745 to 1752, then reconstructed in 1870), several Orthodox churches such as St. Michael's Cathedral, St. Andrew's, St. Vladimir's, the reconstructed Golden Gate and others.
One of Kiev's widely recognized modern landmarks is the highly visible giant Mother Motherland statue made of titanium standing at the Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War II on the Right bank of the Dnieper River. Other notable sites is the cylindrical Salut hotel, located across from Glory Square and the eternal flame at the World War Two memorial Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the House with Chimaeras.
Among Kiev's best-known monuments are Mikhail Mikeshin's statue of Bohdan Khmelnytsky astride his horse located near St. Sophia Cathedral, the venerated Vladimir the Great (St. Vladimir), the baptizer of Rus', overlooking the river above Podil from Volodymyrska Hill, the monument to Kyi, Schek and Khoryv and Lybid, the legendary founders of the city located at the Dnieper embankment. On Independence Square in the city centre, two monuments elevate two of the city protectors; the historic protector of Kiev Michael Archangel atop a reconstruction of one of the old city's gates and a modern invention, the goddess-protector Berehynia atop a tall column.
Kiev was the historic cultural centre of the East Slavic civilization and a major cradle for the Christianization of Kievan Rus'. Kiev retained through centuries its cultural importance and even at times of relative decay, it remained the centre of primary importance of Eastern Orthodox Christianity . Its sacred sites, which include the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (the Monastery of the Caves) and the Saint Sophia Cathedral are probably the most famous, attracted pilgrims for centuries and now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site remain the primary religious centres as well as the major tourist attraction. The above-mentioned sites are also part of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine collection.
Kiev's theatres include, the Kiev Opera House, Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater, Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Theater of Russian Drama, the Kiev Puppet Theater, October Palace and National Philharmonic of Ukraine and others. In 1946 Kiev had four theatres, one opera house and one concert hall, but most tickets then were allocated to privileged groups.
Other significant cultural centres include the Dovzhenko Film Studios, and the Kiev Circus. The most important of the city's many museums are the Kiev State Historical Museum, Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War II, the National Art Museum, the Museum of Western and Oriental Art, the Pinchuk Art Centre and the National Museum of Russian art.
The Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War II is a memorial complex commemorating the Eastern Front of World War II located in the hills on the right-bank of the Dnieper River in Pechersk. Kiev fortress is the 19th-century fortification buildings situated in Ukrainian capital Kiev, that once belonged to western Russian fortresses. These structures (once a united complex) were built in the Pechersk and neighbourhoods by the Russian army. Now some of the buildings are restored and turned into a museum called the Kiev Fortress, while others are in use in various military and commercial installations. The National Art Museum of Ukraine is a museum dedicated to Ukrainian art. The Golden Gate is a historic gateway in the ancient city's walls. The name Zoloti Vorota is also used for a nearby theatre and a station of the Kiev Metro.
