???? Museum of Soviet ARCADE MACHINES (Budget Travel Russia) {St. Petersburg, RUSSIA}
Budget Travel Russia #13
Vintage Soviet arcade machines are no longer relegated to the relics of forgotten electronics. Tucked away from the main sights along Nevsky Street in St. Petersburg, a converted warehouse contains refurbished arcade games honoring USSR technology.
Dozens of vintage Soviet arcade machines are on display at which to be admired, gawked and yes, played in this interactive museum. While it is said the technology of the USSR was always behind the West, and these games would be a prime example, these video games, pinballs and tabletop sports still display a level of technological sophistication that made them fun to play decades ago and even more enjoyable today with their nostalgia.
Matt captures some of the Museum's exuberance and even tries his hand at pulling the Giant Turnip. You have to be there to get it.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines - Moscow
Музей советских игровых автоматов
A lot of arcades have their own special tokens for their games. But few have Soviet-era kopek coins complete with a hammer and sickle.
Preserved by a few Russian students in the basement of a technical school, the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games features about 60 machines from the Soviet era including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball. Although only 50 to 55 of the games are playable, each of the machines paints a picture of life and entertainment behind the Iron Curtain.
The museum has plans to expand as more machines are discovered and restored in the basement. Many of the machines have been sitting idle since the 1980s, when they were built in secret.
Even though all of the machines are in Russian, the gist of the games is pretty apparent; in Tankodrome, for example, players shoot enemies with a tank. For an entry fee of about $8 US, visitors can walk through the museum and get a few 15-kopek coins to test out the machines.

In Soviet Russia...video games play you!
I visited Moscow recently and just had to check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade machines.
The exhibition is a fascinating insight into popular culture in the late Communist era,
and all the games seek to promote the social realism state ideal.
There's no cowboys and monsters here; only space related stuff, driving, ice hockey,
war games, hunting, and titles based on traditional Russian games.
Well worth a visit if you're in Moscow or St Petersburg!

Sorry for the quality of the video but arcade games are for playing and not filming! I had a blast here and it is really neat to see these relay/mechanical based games. A little before my time!
Turns out these machines were generally made in factories that made other things by bored engineers as fun projects!
Don't be a stranger, please click here for updates:

The winter holidays in Russia seem to stretch on forever but this is a great time to check out some of the museums in Moscow. I had heard of one museum of old Soviet arcade machines so we went to take a look and have a play.
It felt like stepping back in time playing all these old games. This is a great way to spend a free afternoon in the Russian capital. There is also one of these museums in St Petersburg.
Thanks to for some extra sound effects and music in this film.

We brave sideways snow to go on the hunt for a little known place housing the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines! Yep, not the sort of thing you would go to Moscow for but definitely worth checking out! Turns out it's more than a museum, you can actually play the games too - old arcade games that date back to the 70's & 80's. Plus there's also a bar and a burger restaurant inside so you can relax after playing the games!

How to Play Soviet Arcade Games in Russia
Where do old kopek coins go when they die? Into the belly of arcade games.
Russia has an ongoing nostalgia for its CCCP days. Perhaps no place is this more clear than Moscow and St Petersburg's Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines. Grad students in Moscow started this collection in a university dorm basement in 2007. Today these museums fill stylish spaces home to several dozen arcade games from the 1970s and 1980s. And you can play the exhibits.
The games hardly compete with 21st-century technology. But that's hardly the point. You pay to get in and get a box of 15-kopek coins to use as tokens on games like Sniper, Basketball, Magistral. It's all fun.
