Inside Helsinki's high tech new library building
(5 Dec 2018) LEADIN
Finland is celebrating the country's birthday with the opening of a new state of the art library in Helsinki.
The new public space has more than just books, featuring 3D printers, recording studios, cinemas and other leisure facilities that are all free for the public to use.
STORYLINE
The sweeping design of Helsinki's new multi-million dollar library building in the new Citizens' Square.
Called Oodi, the large glass structure offers some of the best views over the city.
It will be the centrepiece of a new public square which is still under construction.
The designers wanted to create a multi-purpose space in the heart of the city, like a neighbourhood centre, where people can just hang out and spend time doing something constructive.
The main designer from the ALA Architects studio team, Antti Nousjoki says: A lot of people in Helsinki are working freelance style or fragmented jobs, and we all have several times a week, an extra two hours to kill in the city centre, so instead of just going to the shopping mall or a coffee shop, there was this idea of building a shared non commercial space.
As well as thousands of books, there are also various spaces that visitors are free to use.
So the Oodi library is organized in three different levels. So what we basically done with the architectural concept of the building is to take the public space catalogue, that citizens wanted, and then define three different levels in the city centre which all have very different contacts with the urban heart of Helsinki, says Nousjoki.
He adds: The upper most floor where we are now, is a kind of open landscape of the library, which is kind of floating above the city, so we are little bit removed from the noise of the street, the traffic, the people passing by and peeking in and just happening to visit the building. This is more quiet space for contemplation, for reading, for thinking, for intellectual activities. Maybe more for individual activities.
There are facilities available for sewing, 3D printing, reading, meeting and even recording studios and a cinema.
Oodi librarian and information specialist, Ulla Leinikka says: Public libraries (in Finland) have, from the very beginning, been places where people can go to develop themselves, to study, to read, to get books. And the same basic task they have even today. Also, very important is matter of life long learning and equality, so people can come to libraries to get different skills, not only reading books, but also learning to use different equipment, to use computers for example, 3D printers, UV printers, all kinds of different equipment.
The library opened to the public on Wednesday (5 Dec) ahead of Finland's Independence day on Thursday.

Kiasma (built 1993--1998) is a contemporary art museum located on Mannerheimintie in Helsinki, Finland. Its name kiasma, Finnish for chiasma, alludes to the basic conceptual idea of its architect, Steven Holl. The museum exhibits the contemporary art collection of the Finnish National Gallery founded in 1990. Its central goal is to make contemporary art better known and strengthen its status. An architectural design competition to design a contemporary arts museum in Helsinki was held in 1992. The competition was meant for architects from the Nordic and Baltic countries. Five internationally renowned architects participated among whom there was only one US citizen. In 1993 the work Chiasma by the American architect Steven Holl was selected from the 516 competitors. The construction of the disputed and controversial Kiasma was started in 1996. It was opened in 1998.

Pimiö - Darkroom exhibition - Photography Museum Helsinki
PIMIÖ – DARKROOM
20 AUGUST, 2015 – 31 JANUARY, 2016
This autumn’s main exhibition at the Finnish Museum of Photography revives the original miracle of photography. The exhibition Pimiö – Darkroom enables visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating reality of the darkroom – experientially, through all their senses.
Works by more than 60 photographers, spanning from the 19th century to 2015, demonstrate the changing ideals of photographic printing and the versatility of the techniques. The exhibition highlights materials, craft, different techniques, and the irreplaceability of darkrooms for various uses even today. At the same time, it demonstrates how the miracle of the photograph is produced in darkrooms and how photographic artists have created their own printing styles.
In the exhibition, artists and enthusiasts lead viewers on a journey to working in the darkroom. The exhibition darkroom, films, stories, darkroom equipment and prints from the 19th century to 2015, invite viewers to look, touch, and listen.
Automation and digitalism are replacing materiality, but at the same time digitalism has lost its novelty appeal. This means that many young art photographers have returned to the darkroom, doing things by hand, and using a process in which the end result is not immediately visible, but requires making a number of choices.
In addition to prints by darkroom wizards such as Pentti Sammallahti, Ulla Jokisalo, Matti Saanio and Martti Jämsä, works will be shown by younger photographers, including tintype portraits of skateboarders by Jaakko Markkanen, tender cyanotypes by Ida Taavitsainen and bright chromogenic color prints by Tuukka Kaila. The exhibition includes photographs from the collections of the Finnish Museum of Photography by over 60 artists.
Darkroom is nostalgia, the present day and the future. The exhibition challenges viewers to think about the role of manual work in today's digital world.

“Tikku ('stick') can be built in one night. It takes a stand for the urban planning of the future: as cities grow denser, there is a need to find more agile ways of building and spatial solutions. In an insightful way, Tikku demonstrates the development of cities and a future vision of combining different spaces. A dense urban structure that combines different purposes offers new opportunities for developing communality and brings life to cities when buildings can also be used outside of office hours. A micro apartment building also sets for us an example of a future, says Anita Riikonen, Marketing and Brand Manager at Sponda.

Helsinki Olympic Stadium on a Sunny Day, Finland April 2012.
The Helsinki Olympic Stadium is the largest stadium in the country, mainly used for hosting sports events and big concerts. The stadium is best known for being the center of activities in the 1952 Summer Olympics. During those games, it hosted athletics, equestrian show jumping, and the football finals. It was built however to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were moved from Tokyo to Helsinki before being cancelled due to World War II. The stadium was also the venue for the first World Athletics Championships in 1983 as well as for the 2005 World Championships in Athletics.

I visited the museum at Helsinki Day, 12th June 2014. It was full of people, most children families. I was not easy to take video/photos due to other visitors, virtues made reflection for the camera and the time of my visit was short, I had less than 1 hour to see - the museum was closing at 6pm and I came there after 5pm.

MFA Friday Clip: Finnish Architecture. Review 2018 - Hiirenporras and Kissankita Housing Block
Hiirenporras and Kissankita Housing Block by Anttinen Oiva Architects.
This rather large housing scheme by Anttinen Oiva Architects is an interesting intervention and rehabilitation of a former industrial area near downtown Helsinki. This particular building contains housing, but also some space for commercial, office or studio facilities. Towards the street the building is composed of a 3-story pedestal with a portico façade in brick and five apartment blocks rising from the base. The back façade is facing the old workshops with four semi-public U-shaped courtyards on the first-floor level.
The apartment blocks are built around a central core containing the staircase with floors distributed into three to four apartments in a radial system. The apartments vary in size and benefit from the façades where 90-degree angles are absent, providing daylight, natural ventilation and windows facing multiple directions.
” The jury compliments the solid brick work in the pedestal, the language of the openings and the duality of the two vertical layers clad with different materials. The raised courtyards are interesting because of the outdoor areas they offer, and the visual connection to the future park in front of them.” –Jury, Finnish Architecture. Review 2018

Suomenlinna (Finnish) or Sveaborg (Swedish), until 1918 Viapori (Finnish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands (Kustaanmiekka, Susisaari, Iso-Mustasaari, Pikku-Mustasaari, Länsi-Mustasaari and Långören) and which now forms part of the city of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site and popular with tourists and locals, who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site. Originally named Sveaborg (Fortress of Svea), or Viapori as called by Finnish-speaking Finns, it was renamed Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is sometimes known by its original name. The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism. The general responsibility for the fortification work was given to Augustin Ehrensvärd. The original plan of the bastion fortress was strongly influenced by the ideas of Vauban, the foremost military engineer of the time, and the principles of star fort style of fortification, albeit adapted to a group of rocky islands. In addition to the island fortress itself, seafacing fortifications on the mainland would ensure that an enemy would not acquire a beach-head from which to stage attacks. The plan was also to stock munitions for the whole Finnish contingent of the Swedish Army and Royal Swedish Navy there. In the Finnish War the fortress surrendered to Russia on May 3, 1808, paving the way for the occupation of Finland by Russian forces in 1809.
