Provost Lecture - Georgiy Kasianov: Ukraine Between ‘the East’ and ‘the West’: The Final Cut?
Georgiy Kasianov is head of the Department of
Contemporary Politics and History at the Institute
of the History of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine. He is the
author, editor or co-author of more than a dozen
books and collected volumes on the modern history
of Ukraine and Ukrainian nationalism, including
A Laboratory of Transnational History: Ukraine and
Recent Ukrainian Historiography (2009).
The conventional view of Ukraine, according to
Kasianov, is that it is historically locked in an
ambivalent position between “the East” (Russia)
and “the West” (Europe). Also, it has its own
internal East-West division determined by
different political, cultural and historical legacies.
The recent Maidan revolt started as a protest
against halting the pro-European drive of Ukraine.
Kasianov’s lecture will focus on how contemporary
events in Ukraine, such as the “Revolution of
Dignity” and efforts to bring about broad societal
reforms aimed at future accession to the European
Union, represent the most decisive attempt to
overcome the East-West ambivalence in favor of
the West and Western civilization.

Sounds of Silence by Stepan Ryabchenko
Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art hosted, within the framework of the III International Music Festival ODESSA CLASSICS, an exhibition Sounds of Silence by Stepan Ryabchenko. Young Ukrainian artist, whose works are popular among domestic and western collectors, have repeatedly exhibited at prestigious art forums of the country, will present the interaction of new technologies and classical pictorial tradition. In an attempt to interpret the silence by Stepan Ryabchenko will combine digital art with the natural elements in order to get a new language of art with the help of this synthesis.
«The Sounds of Silence project by Stepan Ryabchenko, as always, explores the boundaries of the worlds - material and spiritual, real and imaginary, analog and digital. Exhibition woven of digital shadows projected on the walls of the museum, the artist captures the ephemeral nature of the virtual, and withal - the physical reality. With the help of laconic moving silhouettes, intertwined branch lines, author fills the space with meanings without filling it physically. His statement is a delicate, subtle signal, the essence of which is a combination of binary code digits, giving it the content and form. Shadows of the nonexistent, visualization of the invisible - are the digital simulacra, projection and association. Traces of thoughts and images, the boundaries designation of the visible and perceptible», − writes about the works that will be included in the Sounds of Silence exhibition art critic, Natalya Matsenko.
The project will surprise Stepan Ryabchenko's fans with minimalism creativity in color decision, because the silence, the solitude which is associated with it, suggests a monochrome solution, rather than a riot of colors. Images-shadows, which will come to the forefront of works, are called to enter into a dialogue with the imagination of the viewer, to call subconscious associations.
According to Stepan Ryabchenko «Shadows are the digital silence in a stopped moment. Presence of absence, stopped instantness». Philosophical and meditative, the artist's new project focuses attention on the duality of the world, in which harmony is much greater than it seems to us.

Chapter 2: Charming Odessa
Founded by Russia’s Catherine the Great in the late 18th century, Odesa, a decadent and energetic city right at the Black Sea, will be the point of interest of our excursion today.
Let us take you to a town known for its sunny climate, sandy beaches and beachside nightclubs. To people that are known for being stylish, funny, savvy and not easily impressed in the old USSR. We’ll arrive in Odesa in the morning and start the day right with a tour through the old town, starting in the Port with the founding of Odesa as a Russian Naval Fortress where we will pass by the Belvedere of Vorontsov’s Palace & the Monument of L-Utesov. Continuing to a monument to the city’s founders, including Catherine the Great. Moving on in history to the first Russian revolution in 1905 where the crew of the battleship potemkin stood up against the Russian regime over to the foundation of the Odesa Soviet Republic (which lasted almost two months, until it was sacked by German and Austrian-Hungarian forces) to the Bolshevik Uprising in 1917/1918, through the Ukrainian Independence and finally to the Trade Union House, where in January 2014 the bloodiest civil conflict in Odesa since1918 escalated. With the city’s origin as a Tatar settlement, it has always been the host of a multiethnic population which is still represented today in a large Russian minority of 30 %.
Odesa’s national opera and theatre – the jewel of Odesa’s architectural, designed by the same architects that also designed the Vienna state opera – and the Spaso-Preobazhenskj Cathedral, will introduce us in the Odessan architecture and diverse but simple beauty of the city. Additionally, we will visit the Odesa Privoz, a market filled with Soviet relics and the Museum of Western & Eastern Art.
In the evening we will explore Vul Derybasivska, the famous promenade of Odesa with its neo-renaissance architecture leading us to the potemkin steps with a beautiful view over the harbor. Passing by the Duke of Richlieu statue we will stroll along the tree-lined Primorsky Boulevard, a slight sea breeze accompanying us to the Arcadia district where beach clubs and loud music only leave us to say – Let’s party.
The morning after – if you are still able we would like to take you to one of Odesa’s famous beaches & soak up the sun, build a sandcastle or go for a swim – whatever your heart desires. In the afternoon we will take you back to Kiyv, while taking a little break in the fabled Uman – with its beautiful landscape and the center point of Jewish pilgrims travelling to see the burial site of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. In Jewish faith, it is believed that a travel to his grave provides the best chance of getting unscathed through the stern judgement.

Ukrainian National Museum CHORNOBYL +25 April 8 -- May 25, 2011
25 years ago on April 26, 1986, the lives of millions of people were forever changed by the explosion that took place in reactor #4 at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The radiation from this explosion carried all across Europe with the most contaminated areas being in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Over 400,000 people were evacuated from their homes, many of them never able to return. Today there are still over 5.5 million people who are living on land that is contaminated from this disaster. Countless individuals have sacrificed their health and even their lives to help clean up after the devastation. 25 years later they are still battling how to contain the tons of nuclear material that is still present at the Chornobyl nuclear site. There are still those who live in the town of Chornobyl. Exhibit Opens on Friday, April 8th at 7 pm and continues through May 25, 2011. This exhibit makes sure we never forget what happened at Chornobyl in 1986 and highlights the issues still facing those living in contaminated areas. The Ukrainian National Museum is located in the heart of the Ukrainian Village, at 2249 West Superior Street in Chicago.
