STORYLINE:
Crowds gathered in St. Petersburg on Sunday to watch a reconstruction of World War II events to mark the 72nd anniversary of the end of the Siege of Leningrad.
A shooting range with real guns was organised for children and their parents as part of the event.
The siege began in September 1941 in the city now known at St Petersburg, three months after Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union.
Residents of Leningrad, had to content themselves with daily food rations of no more than 250 grams of poor quality bread during the deadly 29-month-long Nazi siege.
About one million Russian civilians and a similar number of Russian soldiers died before the blockade was finally broken on January 27, 1944.
Historical festivals and military reconstructions of the WWII events play an important part in celebrations of anniversaries of victory of the USSR (the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) in the World War II as well in the patriotic education of children and teenagers in Russia.

A global fight against antiquities smuggling, a problem that has increased since the invasion of Iraq, and the war in Syria - has seen some stolen treasures returned. Francis Collings reports, five marble statues were among a haul of hundreds that Lebanese militiamen took from a storehouse in the early 1980s.

Russian Museum Recreates WWII-Era 'Land Battleship
A copy of the largest tanks of World War II was produced for a Russian military museum. A working T-35 tank, which weighed even more than Russia’s newest main battle tank, was built by the metallurgical company Uralelectromed JSC for the Museum of Military Equipment in the Sverdlovsk region, Russia.
During the years between World War I and World War II, the new Soviet state pursued an aggressive military expansion plan, including the mechanization of its armed forces. The construction of heavy tanks—heavier than any of those fielded by any other country—was meant to grow Soviet heavy industry, encourage the study of engineering, as well as strengthening the Soviet military.
Re-enacting Retro - Siege of Yorktown Classic NPS Museum Film
Re-enacting Retro - Older National Park Service Museum film from the early 1980s - the Bicentennial era (1981). You will probably recognize some shots and sequences that were later re-used in some of the great 1990s A&E History era documentaries on the Revolution. A nice little film.
We hope you enjoy. This is another in a series of postings on our YouTube channel of a cool New series of Old videos -- featured only on here -- taken from a personal collection of re-enacting films and videos from the 1980s that can't be found anywhere else, or else we've tried to find them for nostalgia's sake, but did our own digging and presenting the results of our treasure hunt here. Some are transferred off of VHS originals or DVD transfers from those VHS copies. Originals were in Standard Def or Videotaped off of TV when they first aired. Some shot professionally and others by individuals with portable home video cameras on their shoulders.
Some Classic Re-enacting videos are already searchable on YouTube, but we wanted to start a new series of some rarely or never before seen classics that either only aired once or where short lived and available only to a select few at the time. We hope you enjoy. These programs presented in this RE-ENACTING RETRO series are presented for the enjoyment of all and we don't claim them for ourselves.

Alphonse de Neuville (1835-1885) A collection of paintings 4K Ultra HD
Alphonse de Neuville (1835-1885) was a French Academic painter who studied under Eugène Delacroix.
His dramatic and intensely patriotic subjects illustrated episodes from the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War, the Zulu War and portraits of soldiers.
Some of his works have been collected by the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and by the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
Born Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe Deneuville to wealthy parents at Saint-Omer, Pas-de-Calais, earned his degree of bachelier ès-lettres, and in spite of family opposition, he entered (1856) the naval school at Lorient; it was there that his artistic instincts started.
He was discouraged by several painters of repute, but he was admitted to work in the studio of François-Edouard Picot; he did not remain there long. He was painting by himself when he produced his first picture,
The Fifth Battalion of Chasseurs at the Gervais Battery (Malakoff). In 1860 Neuville painted an Episode of the taking of Naples by Garibaldi for the Artists' Club in the rue de Provence, and sent to the Paris Salon in 1861 The Guard Chasseurs in the Trenches of the Mamelon Vert.
He participated in illustrating the Hetzel editions of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
He also illustrated Le Tour du monde and Guizot's History of France. At the same time he painted a number of remarkable pictures:
The Attack in the Streets of Magenta by Zouaves and the Light Horse (1864), A Zouave Sentinel (1865), The Battle of San Lorenzo (1867), and Dismounted Cavalry crossing the Tchernaia (1869). In these he showed peculiar insight into military life.
His full power was reached after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. The long-term French reaction was Revanchism: a deep sense of bitterness, hatred and demand for revenge against Germany, especially because of the loss of Alsace and Lorraine. Paintings that emphasized the humiliation of the defeat came in high demand, such as the Spy by de Neuville.
He then aimed at depicting in his works the episodes of that conflict, and began by representing the Bivouac before Le Bourget (1872). His fame spread rapidly, and was increased by The Last Cartridges (1873), memorializing an episode involving the Blue Division of the French marines, in which it is easy to discern the vast difference between the conventional treatment of military subjects, as practised by Horace Vernet, and that of a man who had lived the life that he painted.
In 1874 the Fight on a Railroad was not less successful, and was followed by the Attack on a House at Villersexel (1875) and the Railway Bridge at Styring (1877). In 1878 the painter exhibited (not at the Great Exhibition) Le Bourget, the Surprise at Daybreak, The Intercepted Despatch-bearer, and a considerable number of drawings. He also exhibited in London some episodes of the Zulu War. Fifty thousand people paid to see his impression of The Defence of Rorke's Drift (1880), which the infant Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney paid a large sum to acquire.
In 1881 he was made an officer of the Légion d'honneur for The Cemetery of Saint-Privat and The Despatch-bearer and the Huns in the Battle of Chalon. During these years Neuville was at work with Édouard Detaille on an important though less artistic work, The Panorama of Rézonville.
Neuville died in Paris on May 18, 1885.
At the sale of his works the state purchased for the Palais du Luxembourg the Bourget and the Attack on a Barricaded House, with a watercolor The Parley, and a drawing of a Turco in Fighting Trim.

A note on 'Ivan the Terrible' - in Russia, Ivan IV has the epithet 'Гро́зный' meaning 'Great' or 'Formidable'. So why is he known as Ivan 'the Terrible' in English? Because he was evil or useless or because of anti-Russian bias? No, because 'Terrible' in English also means awesome or formidable - this was well understood when 'Гро́зный' was first translated into English centuries ago, but now fewer people understand this. (see definitions 3 & 4 here: The name stuck, and Ivan IV has been known as Ivan the Terrible ever since.

YouTube Is Censoring SF’s New 1.5-Hour Long Video “Russian Military Campaign in Syria 2015-2018”
UPDATE: Dear friends,
By 9:20 CET, August 14, 2018 we had received a couple of letters from the YouTube Team. The latest letter was explaining the position of members of the YouTube Team on employment of age-restrictions on videos.
The provided explanation was not related to the content of our video. However, at about 9:30-9:40 CET, the age-restriction was lifted from Russian Military Campaign in Syria 2015-2018.
For our part, we express thanks to competent members of the YouTube Team that have studied the situation and have restored our rights lifting the age-restriction from the video.
SouthFront also wants to give a huge thanks to our audience for the wave of support provided.
Sincerely yours,
SouthFront: Analysis & Intelligence
***
DEAR FRIENDS,
Due to popular demand, SouthFront released a detailed summary of military and political developments in Syria since the start of the Russian military operation to present
This video summary was released on August 11 and had the length of 92 minutes. Previously, SouthFront released a documentary on the Houthis and the war in Yemen, which had the length of 61 minutes.
Despite high complexity of this work, SouthFront continued providing daily coverage of the key military and diplomatic developments from around the world, including our Syria war report videos.
SouthFront did all this work in a complicated environment.
Less than 2 hours after the release of our new video “Russian Military Campaign in Syria 2015-2018“ it was placed behind an age restriction because it allegedly includes “violent or graphic content that appears to be posted in a shocking, sensational, or disrespectful manner”. The age-restriction clearly impacts a possible reach of the video because it does not allow people without YouTube accounts to watch it.
SouthFront immediately appealed this decision and YouTube found that the video includes no graphic content. However, the age-restriction remained because the video may not be appropriate for a general audience.
Summing up: The video does not violate any YouTube Community Guidelines, but despite this, a manual decision was made to age-restrict the video in order to limit its reach to the general audience. This situation can be considered as another example of censorship imposed against alternative media and an independent point of view.
SouthFront has repeatedly faced various sophisticated attacks aimed at censoring the channel on YouTube [systematic ‘false flagging’ and other hostile actions] or damaging its website. The recent developments on YouTube may indicate that a new pre-planned campaign may be launched against the project soon.
Thanks to support from the audience and our partners, South Front has overcome a number of difficulties and is ready to face new ones. However, the situation remains complicated.
In August, SouthFront so far collected about 17% of the minimal budget needed to continue the project. Without the minimal budget, SouthFront will not be able to continue its work at the same level as it did before.
