Can't See Chief Mountain from Chicago
On July 23rd, due to a generous grant from the Fetzer Institute, the feature film Winter in the Blood made its Blackfeet Nation debut at the Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning, MT. James Welch, the author of the novel on which the film is based, was Blackfeet and Gros Ventre. Both the man and his work are well known and loved in Blackfeet country. The first screening was attended by several members of the community. This included eleven elders, brought from Blackfeet Care Center.
On July 25th, a digital storytelling workshop took place to coincide with the screenings. Free and open to all ages, the workshop was attended by two participants: Janice, and her ten year old daughter, Keeley. After a brief planning session, the workshop crew - which Keeley dubbed Native Lands Films, went mobile to document stories from the community.

Native American: Maza Duta - Calm Before The Storm
The Maza Duta (Red Iron) Drum Group was formed January 1997. Maza Duta was one of the last traditional Headmen of the Pheasant's Rump Nakota Band of whom all the members of the group are descendants. It was with great honor and with all due respect that the Elders of Pheasant's Rump permitted them to use this name. In making this recordings Maza Duta Singers attempted to carry on the legacy of the McArthur singers who had come before them.
With this song I put images I took in the Museum of the Plains Indian, Browning, Montana, USA, in September 2004. The Museum is situated in the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.
A permanent exhibition presents the diversity of historic arts created by tribal peoples of the Northern Plains, including the Blackfeet, Crow, Northern Cheyenne, Sioux, Assiniboine, Arapaho, Shoshone, Nez Perce, Flathead, Chippewa, and Cree. Highlighting the historic exhibits is a display of the varied traditional costumes of Northern Plains men, women, and children, presented in complete detail on life-size figures. Other historic displays are devoted to numerous art forms related to the social and ceremonial aspects of the tribal cultures of the region.
I do not have copyrights to this song; anyone who has please come forward and contact me via my page (mrSunflare). I put just this single song of the Maza Duta cd (12 original songs in total) here so all people can enjoy and 'taste' pure traditional Native American music. The cd can be purchased via Sunshine Records Ltd. (the Sunshine Group).

Research on the Blackfoot language indicates it is ‘endangered’, meaning there are less than 3,000 fluent speakers currently living in Canada today. As many Elders will attest to, language is the cornerstone to understanding Aboriginal worldview, ceremony, tradition and natural law, and without it many Aboriginal peoples feel cultural confusion and lack positive identity association.
The Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth (USAY) has over the past ten years recognized the growing need to expand Blackfoot language resource tools among urban Aboriginal youth and encourage language preservation. We have created five volumes of the Blackfoot Graphic Novel which are intended to act as a resource tool to accompany language classes, discussions with Elders, and overall enhance a youth’s learning experience.
The graphic novel and accompanying DVD is a great tool for language preservation. Through the project’s development, USAY is able to capture a story relevant to urban Aboriginal youth, showcase the written language and spotlight the spoken word or oral history of Blackfoot peoples. This medium provides USAY with the ability to reach a large population of urban Aboriginal youth in which to preserve and protect the Blackfoot language and enhance resources for other language learning.
