Constanța; Greek: Κωνστάντζα or Κωνστάντια, Konstantia, Bulgarian: Кюстенджа or Констанца, Turkish: Köstence), historically known as Tomis (Ancient Greek: Τόμις),is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Romania. It was founded around 600 BC. The city is located in the Dobruja region of Romania, on the Black Sea coast. It is the capital of Constanța County and the largest city in the region.
As of the 2011 census, Constanța has a population of 283,872, making it the fifth most populous city in Romania. The Constanța metropolitan area includes 14 localities within 30 km (19 mi) of the city, and with a total population of 425,916 inhabitants, it is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Romania.
The Port of Constanța has an area of 39.26 km2 (15.16 sq mi) and a length of about 30 km (19 mi).[citation needed] It is the largest port on the Black Sea, and one of the largest ports in Europe.
According to Jordanes (after Cassiodorus), the foundation of the city was ascribed to Tomyris the queen of the Massagetae (The origin and deeds of the Goths)
Tomis was later renamed to Constantiana in honour of Constantia, the half-sister of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (274-337). The earliest known usage of this name was Κωνστάντια (Constantia) in 950. The city lay at the seaward end of the Great Wall of Trajan, and has evidently been surrounded by fortifications of its own. After successively becoming part of the Bulgarian Empire for over 500 years, and later of the independent principality of Dobrotitsa/Dobrotici and of Wallachia under Mircea I of Wallachia, Constanța fell under the Ottoman rule around 1419.
A railroad linking Constanța to Cernavodă was opened in 1860. In spite of damage done by railway contractors there are considerable remains of ancient masonry walls, pillars, etc. An impressive public building, thought to have originally been a port building, has been excavated, and contains the substantial remains of one of the longest mosaic pavements in the world.
In 1878, after the Romanian War of Independence, Constanța and the rest of Northern Dobruja were ceded by the Ottoman Empire to Romania. The city became Romania's main seaport and transit point for much of Romania's exports.
Situated at the crossroads of several commercial routes, Constanța lies on the western coast of the Black Sea, 185 miles (298 km) from the Bosphorus Strait. An ancient metropolis and Romania's largest sea port, Constanța traces its history some 2,500 years. Cabride in Romania: Constanta - Eforie Sud and back (2014)
During my trip to Romania in 2014 I squeezed in some railfanning and also got to experience a cabride on Romania's line that heads south from Constanta to the border with Bulgaria along the coast of the Black Sea and passing through many tourist/beach communities and villages.
I had this opportunity come to me because a family friend happened to work for CFR and we just nonchalantly walked into the cabs of both trains and were treated with the uttermost respect and curiosity as well as I am from the U.S. and exchanged knowledge and differences between our railroads and ways of life with each crew.
On another note, during my trip to Romania one night when I was railfanning at the Constanta station a railfan actually hopped into the cab of a train with his tripod and everything and headed home in the cab as a free ride. Something you will never see in the USA...
We start off departing Constanta's train station. Before our train (which originated in București, Romania) can depart for the border with Bulgaria, the electric locomotive on the lead gets got off for a diesel locomotive as this line is diesel only. From Constanta westward, towards Bucuresti (the capital of Romania) most if not all trains use electricity to operate.
We took our train to Eforie Sud (south Eforie) where we got off and met our northbound train back to Constanta. In the midst of me video-taping our first train leaving and trying to walk to the head end the northbound train actually started moving and we had to board it while it was moving. The only way this was possible was with a button on the outside of the doors that lets you open it from the outside. Without that, we would have been shit out of luck waiting hours for the next train because of my foamer dumbass.
We road in a passenger car to the next station stop Eforie Nord (North Eforie) where we moved to the headend more quickly. The cabride back starts here at Eforie Nord all the way back to Constanta where we started.
You can see the video of my railfanning from the ground level in the link below:
1:45 leaving Constanta station
5:05 overtaking CFR Marfa and connection to Port of Constanta
9:45 - 11:00 Agigea Nord Yard
12:55 Crossing Canalul Dunare wear it enters Marea Neagra (the Black Sea)
14:35 Entering single-track mainline
19:00 Entering Eforie Nord
20:25 stray dog uses crossing to cross tracks
21:00 using horns on conductor side (right is horn/left is whistle)
22:15 this stretch of track is thin piece of land between Black Sea and a lake
23:50 crew explains beeping in association with yellow signal
25:40 entering Eforie Sud
27:15 exit Southbound train to wait for the northbound
27:20 terminal auto decades ago, trains with autoracks so vacationers from interior parts of Romania and Europe could bring their cars to the typical beach vacation spots along Romania's Black Sea coast
27:30 the northbound we will take back arrives
28:30 southbound departs and because of me videoing we have to jump into passenger car of the northbound
29:06 after riding on the train one station stop we get to the cab

Is located in the county of the same name, in the southeastern part of Romania.
It is situated on the Black Sea coast, in a lagoon area to the east, hilly in the north and in the central part, and the plain to the south and west.
The city has a 6 km long private beach. The northern part of the city, Mamaia, the most populated tourist resort on the seaside, lies on the shores of a lagoon, with a beach of 7 km long, a beach that continues with another 6 km of Navodari territory.
The city is bordered by the towns of Năvodari and Ovidiu to the north, Agigea commune to the south , the town of Murfatlar and the commune of Valu lui Traian to the west, the town of Techirghiol and the commune Cumpăna to the southwest and the Black Sea to the east. Constanta is divided into districts: traditional ones such as Anadolu (Anadol-Köy in Turkish), Tâbcăria, Brotacei, North Faleza, Coiciu, Palas, Medea, Bratianu, Center, Peninsula, Agigea or Viile Noi, such as Tomis I, II, III and North, Abator, CET, Km 4, 4-5 and 5, South Fale (Gate 6) and other poetic names, legacies of the golden age.
Was founded after the Greek colonization of the Black Sea basin (Greek Pontos Euxeinos) by the merciful colonists in the 7th-5th centuries BC, under the name of Tomis.
This name is probably derived from the Greek word (Tomí) meaning cut, cleavage. According to the legend, Iason and his arrogates would have been here after they were sent to the Caucasus to steal the Golden Wool. Followed by King Colhide's fleet, Aietes Uliul, he had cut off his son, Absyrtos, until then held hostage on board to force the king to seek and gather the remains for the funeral ceremony, giving the Argonautes
The time required to run for the Bosphorus. However, archaeologists consider it more plausible that the cut (shoreline) would rather have designated the ancient port, today submerged, in front of the Casino.
Another possible origin of the name would be Tomiris, the Queen of the Massages, a getic tribe living between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea (Herodotus).
The Milezians found a getic settlement in these places, the new city reaching the level of a polis only in the IV-III century BC.The port used by the Greeks to trade with the inhabitants of these regions (Dacians, Scythians and Celts) Of an urban center.
Tomis became part of the Roman Empire in the year 46, being renamed Constantiana. Publius Ovidius Naso, the Roman poet, found his exile between 8-17 years. And spent the last eight years in Constantia
The city is one of the most important in Romania, one of four roughly equal-size cities which rank after Bucharest.
The metropolitan area, founded in 2007, comprises 14 localities located at a maximum distance of 30 km (19 mi) from the city, and, with 387,593 inhabitants,it is the third largest metropolitan area in Romania.
Situated at the crossroads of several commercial routes, Constanța lies on the western coast of the Black Sea, 185 miles (298 km) from the Bosphorus Strait.
An ancient metropolis and Romania's largest sea port, Constanța traces its history some 2,500 years. Originally called Tomis, legend has it that Jason landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece.
One of the largest cities is now an important cultural and economic center, worth exploring for its archaeological treasures and the atmosphere of the old town center.
It s historical monuments, ancient ruins, grand Casino, museums and shops, and proximity to beach resorts make it the focal point of Black Sea coast tourism.
Open-air restaurants, nightclubs and cabarets offer a wide variety of entertainment. Regional attractions include traditional villages, vineyards, ancient monuments and the Danube Delta, the best preserved delta in Europe.
