The Last Resort, Traditional Korean Houses -마지막 고택
Your little piece of peace and quiet
More and more families and friends are retreating to old Korean houses to rejuvenate during the weekends. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has picked up on the trend and started a hanok (traditional Korean house) experience program.
People who go on the tour will not only get to rest but will also return home with more knowledge about traditional homes and all the wisdom and thoughtfulness of the people who once called such places their home. Surrounded by greenery, it is a great place for children to get in touch with nature.
Since 2005, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and Korea Tourism Organization has been renovating a number of traditional Korean homes by adding modern showers and bathrooms for the convenience of the lodgers. They have brought together information about traditional homes and lodges across the nation on their website A Night in a Hanok ( The site is organized according to area, type of home, experience program, and recommended course.

Hello, Mr. K! 'The Hanok House Concert' / Hello, Mr. K! '한옥 하우스 콘서트
The 'Hello, Mr. K!' project was launched to offer diverse Korean cultural contents to foreigners living in Korea. As part of the project, a special hanok house concert was held in which the culture and arts of Korea's seonbi could be experienced. Beyond a simple performance for spectators, it was planned to seemlessly provide a simulation of being invited into the homes of seonbi. We visited the site of this unique house concert, held in a traditional Korean hanok home.

Hanok A House Embracing Nature
Korean traditional houses, called Hanok, offer a glimpse into long ago lifestyles Korean architecture. Generally, Hanok is defined as traditional wood- framed house made of natural materials and covered with Korean traditional roof structure. It looks as castle which is Korean unique architecture as you can browse currently Insadong, Samchungdong or Changdukgoong palace.
Restaurants and lodging facilities based on Korean traditional-style houses or hanok are very popular these days. Some apartments have even been transformed into traditional-style homes. Take a look.
On the outside, this apartment looks like any other apartment. But inside there is a twist. If you go inside, you will find that in fact it's more like a cozy traditional house hanok.
[Soundbite] Chang Keum-ja : When we visited a hanok village, we felt very relaxed and comfortable. So we decided to remodel our apartment into a hanok-style home.
The owners of this apartment met with experts on several occasions to remodel their home into the hanok style.
[Soundbite] Kim Jae-heon(Hanok Interior Designer) : This home perfectly blends the advantages of modern and hanok-style decors. Thanks to the natural materials it creates a healthy residential environment that is also cozy like a traditional-style house.
The entrance features a traditional-style gate, which makes you feel as if you're entering a tile-roofed home. The living room was decorated with natural wood, which creates a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The porch by the window is where the couple likes to spend time most of all. It's perfect for sipping tea or having a snack. The wallpaper in this apartment is also unique. It was made entirely of paper by carefully weaving Chinese drawing paper yarn.Wallpaper and tiles of different materials were used on both sides of the wall to make it look like a hanok fence. These tiles made of volcanic ash help keep indoor humidity at the right level. Conventional windows and curtains were also replaced with traditional-style windows to enhance coziness using indirect lighting. They can be opened and closed like curtains using rails. This home is all about practicality and elegance, like a real hanok house. Instead of buying new furniture, the couple renovated their existing furniture. They replaced the doors and doorknobs on the closets an

Junju hanok village in South Korea
The Hanok is traditiona Korean house. There is a hanok preserve area in Junju province. You can see unique wall in this area. You can find more in my blog
A village of traditional Korean hanok homes can be found in Eunpyeong, western Seoul. The neighborhood is emerging as a new cultural and art space with sculptures installed around the village as part of a public art project.
The hanok house village in Eunpyeong New Town is situated near Mount Bukhan. Public art sculptures installed around the village are attracting attention. This work of giant red blown petals looks like a breathing flower. It is enjoying great popularity among residents as a symbol of the village. These pagoda-shaped works hanging on tree branches were made with tablecloths. It creates a friendly impression in harmony with the roofs of the hanoks.
[Soundbite] Lee Rang(Eunpyeong Hanok Museum) : The combination of traditional hanok houses and contemporary art is the theme of this exhibition.
Installation artworks made with everyday necessities are also on display. Local residents and students took part in the production of some works.
[Soundbite] Choi Jeong-hwa(Installation Artist) : I raised questions about the basic role of art. Anyone can be an artist and everything can become art. That is what I am always saying.
The special exhibition of a public art project will continue at the Eunpyeong Hanok Museum and around the village until the end of March next year.
