Myosenji Abutsubo Temple, Sado Island - Japan
Myosenji Abutsubo Temple, one of Nichiren Shu temple in Sado island. The origins of this temple go back to 1278 when Tamemori Endo a Kitamo samurai (a samurai who used to serve under a retired emperor) became a fervent devotee of the Lotus sutra after spending time with Nichiren during his exile on Sado and changing his name to Nittoku Abutsubo (priest) and supported by his wife Sennichini turned their house into a temple. At one time this was the castle where Honma family in Takeda district lived and even today the place still retains an atmosphere of castle ruins. There is a famous story from the time when there was a castle here about how Kumawakamaru avenged his father Suketomo Hino who had been defeated in the Shochu Incident and exiled to Sado. In the temple precincts you will find Niigata Prefecture's only five-storey pagoda and the grave of Suketomo Hino.

Hokekyoji temple is related to the achievement of the Japanese famous Buddhist priest, Nichiren.
1996 Interview with Nichiren Shoshu Mother and Young Priest at Taisekiji, Japan
In 1996 5 time Karate Kickboxing champion Anthony Amp Elmore of Memphis, Tennessee made his 1st visit to the Nichiren Shoshu Temple in Taisekiji, Japan. During his visit Elmore met Mrs. Miriko Fugi who was the wife of the Chief Priest in Fuji city. Mrs. Fugi was visiting her 13 year old son who had entered the Priesthood. Today at the time of this posting the young man would be 30 years old. This video gives a western view of the life and tradition of Nichiren Shoshu Priest. The young man's close friend was Hogan Nagasaki who was at the time the Chief Priest in New York. Hogan Nagasaki did not complete his Priest training. His sister is married to Rev. Murata who at the time of this writing is the Chief Priest in Washington D.C.
This video gives a Western Insight into the over 750 year old Japanese tradition of Nichiren Shoshu Priest. It is our understanding that Hogan Nagasaga did not complete his training a a Priest and for some reason opted not to be a Nichiren Shoshu Priest as his father. Konponji, Sado Island
The founder of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism was exiled to Sado in 1271 when his Rissho Ankokuron (Treatise on Securing the Peace of the Land by the Establishment of the Correct Dharma) provoked the wrath of the Kamakura Shogunate. Nichiren described his own point of view in his Kaimokusho (On Opening Your Eyes) which he wrote in the Sanmai Hall of the Konponji Temple in Tsukahara. After moving to the Ichitani Monastery (Myoshoji Temple) he composed the Jukai Mandala or Mandala of the Ten Buddhist Realms in which he expressed the philosophy of the Lotus Sutra. The culmination of Nichiren's thought and philosophy is found in the Kanshinhonzonsho, meaning Treatise on the Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind. It is said that he was able to produce these works thanks to the external protection of the priest Abutsubo and his wife, Sennichini (Myosenji Temple) and the priest Kokufu and his wife, Zennichiama (Sesonji Temple) . Nichiren spent two years and five months on Sado before being pardoned in 1274, and returning to Kamakura. From Honkoji Temple in Matsugasaki where Nichiren landed to the sacred sites in Shibute, Maura and other areas from which he set sail when he left, Sado abounds with histories, ruins and legends connected with Nichiren.

蓮華峰寺 Rengebuji Temple | Ogi, Sado, Japan
I am impressed to see the beauty of Rengebuji Temple (蓮華峰寺) in Sado, Japan. It is full with natural beuty and flowers gadening. During visit, I felt touch of heavenly mode and Buddhists' spirituality. The founder monks may inherited the heavenly inspiration for building it. So it is still spreading the mode of peace and harmony around. There is three most important three temples in esoteric Shingon Buddhism. This is one in Sado and other two are Kongobuji in Wakayama and Murouji in Nara. This temple was built in 14th century.

Sado Island Museum, Japan
The Sado History Museum (Sado Rekishi Dentetsukan) exhibits the cultural history of Sado Island, using intriguing displays with animatronic puppets that reenact historical events and local legends. Information in English, however, is sparse.
Many displays center around Sado's history as a place of exile and introduce three of the island's most prominent, unvoluntary visitors: the former Emperor Juntoku, the Buddhist monk Nichiren, the founder of Nichiren Shu, and Zeami, the founder of Noh.
Other exhibits depict some of Sado's local legends, while a separate corner of the museum is dedicated to the late local artist Sasaki Shodo, who was appointed a living national treasure for his invaluable skills as a metal casting artist.
A final attraction of the museum is Charles Jenkins, husband of Soga Hitomi, one of several Japanese nationals who were abducted to North Korea in the 1970s and 80s and returned to Japan in 2002. Mr. Jenkins now works in the museum gift shop

Nakayama Hokekyo-ji, The Grand Head Temple Of Nichiren
The Grand Head Temple of Nichiren Sect, Hokekyo-ji was started in Kamakura period in the Middle Ages of 13th century, with many legends of the founder Nichren.
Nakayama was his peaceful place when Nichren involved in some troubles with the Government at Kamakura, and also Nichren preached at. The Kishibojin-do which dedicates the stutue of Kishibojin (the goddess of taking care of children) carved by Nichiren himself is worshipped very popular and is called as one of Edo Three Grand Kishibojin. Thousands of people visit and bless of safe delivery of a baby, healthy child rearing, curing disease, and rising prosperity of a company's fate.
Nakayama Hokekyo-ji Temple is the central training center of the incantations of Nichiren Sect. From November 1st to February 10th, it holds the 100 days severe practice in cold weather every year. It is known one of the severest religious practice in Japan.
Hokekyouji-Temple preserves the national treasures, they are very important historical properties on the Buddhism in Japan. They are the two masterpieces, 'Rissho-ankoku-ron' and 'Kanjin-honzon-sho' written by the founder Nichiren himself. And the four architectures, the Goju-no-to (the five-story pagoda)built in Edo period, the Hokke-do hall built in Kamakura period, the Soshi-do hall and the Yon-soku-mon gate built in Muromachi period are designated by the National Government as the important cultural properties. There are many other cultural properties like the framed-calligraphies by Koetsu Honami, the biggest Daibutsu in Chiba prefecture and so on.
There are some events held in Hokekyo-ji Temple. In Spring, the cherry blossomes blooming there look excitingly beautiful.
In addition, visitors enjoy walikng in the site of Hokekyoji Temple without any charges. It is a very clever choice to visit this temple as your final stop before leaving Japan because it is on your way to Narita International Airport from Tokyo or throughout Japan

Oko Ceremony: Lecture in Praise of Nichiren Daishonin
The Great Teacher Tiantai said: “When we perceive the intensity of the rain, we can fathom the giganticness of the dragon causing it, and when we view the flourishing blossoms of the lotus plants, we can gauge the depth of the pond in which they grow.” The Great Teacher Miaole stated: ‘Wise men know the essential source, just as snakes are inherently aware of their own ways.” When the heavens are clear, the ground is distinctly visible, and those who know the Lotus Sutra can master the essence of worldly affairs. Out of great compassion for those who were unaware of the doctrine of ichinen sanzen ( three-thousand realms in a single life-moment), the Buddha wrapped this gem within the five characters and used it to decorate the necks of those in the Latter Day who do not possess the seed of Buddhahood.
(written by Nichiren Daishonin, 13th century Japan)
The above excerpt is a Gosho passage Myosenji Buddhists will study this Sunday for the monthly Oko Ceremony and Lecture. Every month in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, the Oko Ceremony is conducted. The ceremony is held to repay our debt of gratitude for the profound benefit of the Three Treasures: Nichiren Daishonin (the Buddha), the Dai-Gohonzon (the Law) and Nikko Shonin and successive High Priests (the Priesthood).
The ceremony begins with an offering of traditional foods to the Three Treasures and is then followed by the recitation of the Hoben and Juryo chapters of the Lotus Sutra. After chanting, the Chief Priest gives a lecture. The concept of acknowledging and repaying debts of gratitude, which is the basic spirit of the Oko Ceremony, is essential to a correct understanding of True Buddhism and our own lives.
