NASA Ames Research Center Mars Science Laboratory Anniversary Q&A
Q&A from the audience during this morning's ceremony of the first anniversary of the Mars Science Laboratory landing on Mars.
NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA, invited the public to the Visitor Center to celebrate the one year anniversary of the landing of the Mars Science Laboratory, Curiosity. After watching the official livestream from Headquarters in Washington D.C., visitors listened to local speakers describe the contributions that NASA Ames had in the successful entry, decent, and landing stages on Mars, and research instruments onboard the rover.
Space Shuttle Endeavour final fly by at NASA Ames Moffett field Mountain View California
Space Shuttle Endeavour final fly by at NASA Ames Moffett field Mountain View California.
The orbiter is named after the British HMS Endeavour, the ship which took Captain James Cook on his first voyage of discovery (1768--1771).[5] This is why the name is spelled in the British English manner, rather than the American English (Endeavor). This has caused confusion, most notably when NASA itself misspelled a sign on the launch pad in 2007.[6] The name also honored Endeavour, the Command Module of Apollo 15, itself also named after Cook's ship.
After more than twenty organizations submitted proposals to NASA for the display of an orbiter, NASA announced that Endeavour would go to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.[20][21][22]
After low level flyovers above NASA and civic landmarks across the country and in California, it was delivered to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on September 21, 2012.[23] The orbiter was slowly and carefully transported through the streets of Los Angeles and Inglewood three weeks later, from October 11--14 along La Tijera, Manchester, Crenshaw, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevards to her final destination at the California Science Center in Exposition Park.[24][25]
Endeavour encountered a few obstacles while transiting the streets narrowly missing telephone poles, apartment buildings and other structures. The lack of obstacles was due, in part, to the fact that over 400 old-growth shade trees had been cut down beforehand.[26] The power had to be turned off and power carrying poles had to be removed temporarily as the orbiter crept along Manchester to Prairie Avenue then Crenshaw Boulevard. News crews lined the streets along the path with visible news personalities in the news trucks. There were several police escorts as well as considerable security helping to control the large crowds gathered. Endeavour was parked for a few hours at the Great Western Forum where it was available for viewing.[27] The journey was famous for an unmodified Toyota Tundra pickup truck pulling the space shuttle across the Manchester Boulevard Bridge.[28] The space shuttle was mainly carried by four self-propelled robotic dollies throughout the 12 mile journey. However, due to bridge weight restrictions, the space shuttle was moved onto the dolly towed by the Tundra. After it had completely crossed the bridge, the Space Shuttle was returned to the robotic dollies. The footage was later used in a commercial for the 2013 Super Bowl.[29] Having taken longer than expected, Endeavour finally reached the Science Center on October 14.[30]
The exhibit was opened to the public on October 30, 2012 at the temporary Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion of the museum.[27] A new addition to the Science Center, called the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, is under construction as Endeavour's permanent home. Planned for a 2017 opening, the Endeavour will be mounted vertically with an external tank and a pair of solid rocket boosters in the shuttle stack configuration. One payload door will be open to reveal a demonstration payload inside.[27]
After its decommissioning, Endeavour's Canadarm (formally the 'Shuttle Remote Manipulator System') was removed in order to be sent to the Canadian Space Agency's John H. Chapman Space Centre in Longueuil, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal, where it was to be placed on display.[31] The Space Agency's Longueuil headquarters was an unlikely choice for the display of the Canadian-built robotic device. In a Canadian poll on which science or aerospace museum should be selected to display the Canadarm, originally built by SPAR Aerospace, the Canadian Space Agency's headquarters placed third to last with only 35 out of 638 votes.[32][33] Endeavour's Canadarm has since gone on permanent display at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.
✈ USA Trip: Silicon Valley & California Route 1 (travel vlog)
We woke up early to do a little tour in Silicon Valley with our rented convertible... but got pretty lost. Also, it was impossible to find parking space around Google or Apple, and Apple Headquarter's merch store was closed for refurbishment. Not our best day.
But fear not, after the disappointment we visited the cool NASA Ames Research Center museum (which also had a closed merch store), and stuffed ourselves at Sam Clam Chowder, Half Moon Bay. Highly recommended. The glittery sand beach and wild seal watching was a bonus for the location!
On our way back to San Francisco we saw some pretty stunning landscapes as well. Good memories overall :)

NASA Ames Hosts Science Festival for San Francisco Bay Area Students
NASA's Ames Research Center was one of the sponsors of the 10th annual Reachout for the Rainbow After School Science Festival, held at the Bayview Opera House in San Francisco, Calif. Children were able to explore exhibits and hands-on science and technology activities, including displays from the Traveling Space Museum and the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
The free family community event supports NASA's science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) efforts to reach out to underrepresented Bay Area students.
Reachout for the Rainbow After School is a nonprofit faith-based program located in the Bayview Hunters Point community and housed in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“Mars and the Human Imagination” by Brian Kruse, ASP
Mars has long been an object of intense interest in ancient and modern myths. Its ruddy glow inspiring visions of conflict and war, and its surface markings creating a whole genre of popular (mis)representations of Mars as the abode of life in a variety of forms. In this presentation, discover how popular culture has represented, and misrepresented Mars while sparking a special interest most all have in what is actually taking place on the planet most similar to earth in our solar system. NASA missions have returned a plethora of images and information about what Mars is really like. Find out the latest about what is known about the red planet, and what still remains for investigation and discovery on future missions.
Brief Bio
Brian Kruse is the Director of the Teacher Learning Center and Formal Education Programs at the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), where he manages and coordinates a suite of programs, including the Project ASTRO National Network, and San Francisco Bay Area Project ASTRO. NASA Plays Zeppelin!! -- The Arrival
The Airship Ventures' Zeppelin ended its dramatic cross-country trek and landed at its new base location at Moffett Field on Oct. 25, 2008, at approximately 2 p.m. PDT. This airship is the first to fly over the U.S. for more than 70 years. NASA and Airship Ventures entered into an agreement to use the airship to assist with disaster response agencies, for scientific research and educational training with local science centers and museums.
Airship Ventures Inc. is a private company offering sight-seeing rides (which the company calls flightseeing) in a 12-passenger Zeppelin NT out of a World War II United States Navy hanger at Moffett Federal Airfield near Mountain View, California.
Their airship, built by Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH, is as of 2008 one of only three zeppelins in the world. Dedicated and christened Eureka at the 75th anniversary celebration for Moffett Field on November 21, 2008, at 246 feet long it is the largest airship in the world. Its flight en-route from Beaumont, Texas, where it was shipped, to the Bay Area was the first zeppelin flight in the United States in 71 years.
The company is owned by a husband-wife team, Alexandra and Brian Hall of Los Gatos, California. Alexandra Hall previously ran the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California. Katherine Kate Board is the only female airship pilot in the world.
