Walking Around Penn Station in New York City
Pennsylvania Station, also known as New York Penn Station or Penn Station, is the main intercity railroad station in New York City. Serving more than 600,000 commuter rail and Amtrak passengers a day[4] — up to one thousand every ninety seconds[5]— it is the busiest passenger transportation facility in the United States[6][7] and in North America.[8][9]
Penn Station is in the midtown area of Manhattan, close to Herald Square, the Empire State Building, Koreatown, and the Macy's department store. Entirely underground, it sits beneath Madison Square Garden, between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue and between 31st and 34th Streets. The station has 21 tracks fed by seven tunnels (the North River Tunnels, the East River Tunnels, and the Empire Connection tunnel).[10]
Penn Station is at the center of the Northeast Corridor, a passenger rail line that connects New York City with Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and intermediate points. Intercity trains are operated by Amtrak, which owns the station, while commuter rail services are operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and New Jersey Transit. Connections are available within the complex to the New York City Subway, and buses.
The original Pennsylvania Station was inspired by the Gare d'Orsay in Paris (the world's first electrified rail terminal) and was constructed by the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1901 to 1910. After a decline in passenger usage during the 1950s, the original station was demolished in 1963 and replaced in 1969 with the current station. Plans for Pennsylvania Station include the possibility of shifting some trains to the adjacent Farley Post Office, a building designed by the same architects as the original 1910 Pennsylvania Station.

⁴ᴷ Walking Tour of Sunnyside, Queens, NYC
GPS Overlay Version:
Enjoy this walking tour of the Queens, NYC neighborhood of Sunnyside. I start out at the intersection of 39th Street & Greenpoint Avenue, walk to 46th Street, and travel Queens Boulevard, 39th Street, 43rd Avenue, 48th Street, 39th Avenue and Barnett Avenue.
From Wikipedia:
Sunnyside is a middle-class neighborhood in the Western portion of the New York City borough of Queens. It shares borders with Hunters Point and Long Island City to the west, Astoria to the north, Woodside to the east and Maspeth to the south. The neighborhood is part of Queens Community District 2, served by Queens Community Board 2. The neighborhood's boundaries correspond roughly with those of ZIP code 11104, an area of nearly 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) with a population of around 27,000. It contains the Sunnyside Gardens Historic District, one of the first planned communities in the United States.
The name Sunnyside originates with the Bragraw family, French Huguenots who had purchased the land in 1713 and named their estate Sunnyside Hill. Sunnyside was a rural hamlet mostly consisting of small farms and marshland. It was incorporated into Long Island City in 1870, and developed into a bedroom community after the Queensboro Bridge was completed in 1909. A large portion of the neighborhood is six-story apartment buildings constructed during the 1920s and 1930s.

From Wikipedia:
Pennsylvania Station, also known as New York Penn Station or Penn Station, is the main intercity railroad station in New York City and the busiest in the Western Hemisphere, serving more than 600,000 passengers per weekday as of 2019.[a] Penn Station is in Midtown Manhattan, close to Herald Square, the Empire State Building, Koreatown, and Macy's Herald Square. Entirely underground, the station is located in Midtown South beneath Madison Square Garden, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, and between 31st and 33rd Streets, with additional exits to nearby streets.
Penn Station has 21 tracks fed by seven tunnels (the two North River Tunnels, the four East River Tunnels, and the single Empire Connection tunnel). It is at the center of the Northeast Corridor, a passenger rail line that connects New York City with Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and intermediate points. Intercity trains are operated by Amtrak, which owns the station, while commuter rail services are operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and New Jersey Transit (NJT). Connections are available within the complex to the New York City Subway, and buses. An underground passageway formerly provided an indoor connection with the 34th Street–Herald Square subway station and 33rd Street PATH station.
Penn Station is named for the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), its builder and original tenant, and shares its name with several stations in other cities. The current facility is the remodeled underground remnant of the original Pennsylvania Station, a more ornate station building designed by McKim, Mead, and White and considered a masterpiece of the Beaux-Arts style. Completed in 1910, it enabled direct rail access to New York City from the south for the first time. Its head house was torn down in 1963, galvanizing the modern historic preservation movement. The rest of the station was rebuilt in the following six years while retaining most of the rail infrastructure from the original station.
Future plans for Penn Station include adding railway platforms at the station's south end to accommodate two proposed Gateway Program tunnels. Plans also call for adding entrances and concourses to the adjacent James A. Farley Building. The Farley Post Office was built as a companion to the 1910 station. Moynihan Train Hall, part of the Empire Station Complex, will add new concourses for the LIRR and Amtrak within the Farley Post Office building and is being built in phases.
Macy's Herald Square (originally named the R. H. Macy and Company Store) is the flagship of the Macy's department store chain; it is located on Herald Square in Manhattan, New York City. The building's 2,500,000 square feet (230,000 m2), which includes 1,250,000 square feet (116,000 m2) of retail space, makes it among the largest department stores in the United States. The store has stood at the site since 1901.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places and was made a National Historic Landmark in 1978.

The Screenline Count (a 12 hour count of bikes leaving Manhattan) was recorded at 6,600 in 1980 but rose to 32,200 in 2012, a two and a half times increase.
In 2007, the 18 hour bike counts on the Queensboro Bridge for May, Aug, and Sept averaged 1,672 cyclists per day. In 2011 that number rose to 2,976, a 78% increase in just 4 years.
Safe, clear bike lanes encourage more cyclists. More cyclists on the road can create a culture where we have safer bike lanes. Remind drivers (in a manner you feel appropriate) to stay in their own lane, even when letting off passengers. The culture is decided by each of our actions; we shape the world our children will live in. What type streets do you want to give them?
The drop in the Cycling Risk Indicator from 369 in 2000 to 100 in 2011 represents a 73% decrease in the average risk of a serious injury experienced by commuter cyclists in New York City.
Cycling becomes much safer as the number of cyclists grows. But overall street safety is mainly governed by the car and truck drivers. In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians were killed in the United States, about one every 2 hours.
Every 7 months more pedestrians are killed by cars then those in the World Trade Center at 9/11. The simple solution to this slow motion tragedy is to enforce the New York City speed limit of 30 mph. In a collision where a car traveling 40 mph crashes into a pedestrian, the pedestrian is between 3.5 and 5.5 times more likely to die then if the car were traveling at 30mph. The chance of pedestrian fatality rises to 90% between speeds of 50 and 60 mph.
New York City has so many stop lights and traffic, that speeding rarely has a noticeable affect on total travel time. Is it worth rushing just to wait longer at the next intersection?
Much of this route is marked by sharrows (a portmanteau of share and arrow), road markings that look like a person biking in a house. Sharrows are designed to remind motorists of cyclists (only passing with at least 3 feet of clearance). Unfortunately this fails to work in heavy traffic when other cars block the view to the street markings.
In New York City, sharrows are considered a class 3 bike lane.
Class 2 lanes are buffered lanes or standard lanes (where cars my not drive).
Class 1 lanes are protected from drivers by a physical barrier (such as bollards or other parked cars).
Some have claimed that sharrows make maps look filled with bike infrastructure, but they do little to increase safety or encourage more people to cycle.
Howard Wolfson (NYC Deputy Mayor) said, When protected bike lanes are installed, injury crashes for all road users (drivers, pedestrians, cyclists), typically drop by 40 percent and by more than 50 percent in some locations.
Safe streets for all users are complete streets for all users. When was the last time you told your community board about the type of street you think your neighborhood deserves?

Riding the LONG ISLAND RAILROAD from Woodside to Penn Station - LIRR
I jumped on the Long Island Railroad at Woodside and decided to record the voyage into Manhattan. It was a really hot day, but the views were pretty good. I was sitting on the right side of the train.
As we get closer to Manhattan, there's a pretty good view of the New York City skyline. The train passes through Sunnyside Yard, where the Amtrak trains are stored, and Long Island City.
The Long Island Rail Road (reporting mark LI) or LIRR is a commuter rail system serving the length of Long Island, New York, stretching from Manhattan to the easternmost tip of Suffolk County, New York. It is the second busiest commuter railroad in North America (only recently surpassed by its sister railroad, Metro-North), serving about 81 million passengers each year. Established in 1834 and having operated continuously since then, it is the oldest US railroad still operating under its original name and charter. There are 124 stations on the LIRR, and more than 700 miles (1,100 km) of track on its two lines to the two forks of the island and eight major branches. Each weekday, the LIRR provides more than 303,000 rides to customers. It is publicly owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which has styled it MTA Long Island Rail Road. The current LIRR logo combines the circular MTA logo with the text Long Island Rail Road, and appears on the sides of trains. The LIRR is one of two commuter rail systems owned by the MTA; the other one is Metro-North Railroad.
The LIRR is the only commuter passenger railroad in the United States to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with significant off peak, weekend, and holiday service.

Our channel, Carl and Alex Fishing was launched in 2013. Our aim was to inspire people to go fishing, because at the time we did not have many friends who fished. Over the years we have filmed carp fishing, coarse fishing, fly fishing, bass fishing and even a bit of saltwater angling.
