Travel Vlog - Japan 2018 - Day 18 - Nagano Olympic Museum & Zenkoji Temple
As Olympic Geeks, we couldn't go to Japan without visiting Nagano and the Olympic Museum!
For a free museum, the Nagano Olympic Museum is actually really good!
We also paid a quick visit to Zenkoji Temple, and we were lucky enough to be there as the bell was rang.

Japan Trip: Olympic Facility M-Wave many fun experience, Japan Nagano No.035
In 1998, the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games were successfully hosted by Nagano. It was the third Olympics hosted by Japan. The various events were held in Nagano City and neighboring mountain towns, including Hakuba, Karuizawa, Nozawa and Shiga Kogen.
Today, there remains many of the former olympic facilities seen around the city. They are now used as sport and concert venues or serve the local community as sport facilities. Their distinctive architecture remain of interest to both locals and tourists.
M-Wave
M-Wave is the best place to feel the Nagano's olympic past as it contains the Nagano Olympic Museum, which unfortunately opens only on weekends and national holidays. The small museum showcases items such as the olympic torch and memorable photos. It also has a souvenir shop which sells commemorative merchandise. The former speed skating venue is now a versatile arena that features an ice skating rink during winter.
Access info
The former olympic facilities are extended around Nagano City, and can be accessed by city buses from Nagano Station. A rental car would offer you greater flexibility and convenience as the buses may be infrequent. Rental car shops can be found around Nagano Station.

Located in Joyama park, adjacent to the Zenkoji Temple in Nagano is the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum (長野県信濃美術館). Responding to needs of the citizens desiring a museum in Nagano, the prefectural government together with the local news corporation founded the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum in 1966. The exhibits are changed among the four basic themes of “recognizing and promoting local culture,” “introducing a wide spectrum of art,” “art in life,” and “art that nurtures appreciation,” allowing a large range of artwork to be displayed throughout the year. Visitors can view artwork from local artists as well as landscape paintings which show off the beautiful scenery of Shinshu.
Next to the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum is the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery The famous Japanese painter Higashima Kaii donated more than 960 of his artwork, including paintings and sketches, as several books to Nagano Prefecture. To house these magnificent treasures, in 1990 the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery was built. Among the works displayed are masterpieces such as “Vibrant Greens,” “Evening Quiet” and so on. Visitors will find many of his works depict the beautiful Nagano scenery. The pieces are changed every two months.

Hakuba, located in the Northern Alps of Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan's most well-known ski areas, which boasts exceptional quality snow and offers several large ski resorts to choose from.
During the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, Hakuba gained worldwide reputation as it hosted several olympic competitions, including alpine (downhill, super g, and combination) and nordic (ski jump and cross country) events. Today some of the olympic facilities are still in use, such as the Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium. There is also the Hakuba Olympic Village Memorial Hall, a small but interesting museum, located within walking distance from the ski jump. Hakuba can be reached relatively easily from Tokyo, and also from Nagoya and Kansai regions. While it is possible to do a day trip from Tokyo, Hakuba is best enjoyed by all-night skiing. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, there are some hot springs (onsen) available around town.
Twelve of the major resorts in Hakuba area have teamed up to offer the Hakuba Valley Ticket package, which gives discounts on multiple day lift tickets to be used at any of the participating resorts. Two 1-day tickets (valid over a three day period) cost 8700 yen, while three 1-day tickets (to be used over a five day period) cost 12,500 yen. A variety of other combination tickets are also available and some local hotels offer further discounts to staying guests.

Japan Vlog #9: Hiking a mountain in Obuse town, Nagano
Nige & June and June's father went hiking a mountain in Obuse town in north Nagano. Obuse is also famous for chestnut, Sake, Ganshoin temple with a famous picture and old 'Kura' warehouse.
Unfortunately June was suffering from nasty cough from her cold and she gave up hiking at the first break area.
Nige and her father carried on hiking.
There were few bells for dispersing bears. Be warned the bells are quite loud so you might want to turn your volume down.
At the top you will have oustanding views of Obuse town and the famous Nagano north 5 mountains called 'Hokushin Gogaku'. June's father has climbed them all.
The trek took about 3 hours at a leisurely pace.
Afterwards we went to Onsen to relax. And then finished up with Sushi with June's Mum at the Kappa sushi chain which offers plates of sushi for 100 Yen.

Japan Trip: Togakure Ninpo Museum great fun for family, Nagano33 Moopon
The Togakure Ninpo Museum (Togakure-ryū Ninpō Shiryōkan) is devoted to the local Togakure school of ninja. In the 12th century, a warrior from Nagano fled to Iga after fighting on the losing side of a war between the Minamoto and Taira clans. Iga was the traditional bedrock of the ninja, and the warrior learnt his ninja skills there before coming back to Nagano and starting his own ninja school.
The museum is located in the forested mountains about an hour by bus northwest of Nagano's city center, just across the entrance to the Upper Togakushi Shrine. The museum consists of multiple buildings, one of which exhibits tools and weapons used by Togakure Ninja and displays many interesting photos of them practising various techniques in warfare and infiltration. The museum also contains a Ninja House, a building which appears just ordinary when looked from outside but is constructed with many secret doors, passages and contraptions on the inside. It is great fun to find the way through the excellently designed maze in the house. There is also a throwing star (shuriken) throwing range, where for a small fee visitors can experience throwing shuriken at target boards.
Within the same compound stands also the Museum of Togakushi Folklore, which showcases tools, clothing, receptacles and furniture used by people who lived in the area in the past.
Access info.
Take bus number 70 or 71 from Nagano Station in direction of Togakushi. Alight at Togakushi-Okushairiguchi bus stop (戸隠奥社入口, 65 minutes, 1350 yen one way, 1 bus/hour), which is located just next to the museum.
In addition, the Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu travel ticket is available for 2600 yen and includes a) a round trip between central Nagano and the Togakushi area, b) free use of buses within Togakushi, and c) one additional bus ride between Nagano Station and Zenkoji. The Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu can be used over a period of up to five consecutive calendar days. Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (entry until 16:30)
