Hidden Christian Sites of Nagasaki - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Hidden Christian Sites of Nagasaki are a fascinating and unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site. Christianity arrived in Japan with Portuguese explorers in the 16th century and spread quickly, but was eventually banned as Japan's shogun rulers were suspicious of the new foreign religion. Japanese Christians were persecuted, forced to renounce their faith, and occasionally martyred en masse over the next several hundred years. But many Christians kept practicing in secret, particularly in the Nagasaki area, and when a new wave of missionaries arrived in the 19th century, the sudden emergence of hidden Christians was considered a genuine miracle! Although it's quite difficult to visit many aspects of this site, the most spectacular is magnificent Oura Cathedral in the centre of Nagasaki. Let's have a look!

Japanese temples, green mountains and western architecture: welcome to Nagasaki. A city with a rich history with the Netherlands and Portugal through trade. Hiroshima Bombing Story | Tour around the Atomic Hypocenter ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Today is the 74th anniversary of the Hiroshima Bombing - August 6, 2019
Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. It’s a day that changed everything. The atomic bomb decimated the city, killing nearly all nearby the blast. Fast forward about 75 years later, and Hiroshima is now a beautiful city, resurrected from the ruins of the post war period. Near the hypocenter is the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park and Museum and across the river, the A-Bomb Dome which sits as it did, destroyed after the bomb in ruins. We'll look at the area around the hypocenter and see old video footage from 1945 after the bomb. We'll also meet a witness who will describe in detail the horror he saw as he volunteered to help in Hiroshima on August 7, 1945, the next day.
We’re now in the 4th generation since the bomb was dropped, those that were kids who could remember are now in their 80s and 90s. Yuji is a 3rd generation Hiroshima resident since the bomb and he wants to share the city of Hiroshima so people don’t forget the past. He learned a lot from his great uncle who told him stories as a kid of the horrors of that day and how the city rebuilt. Another reason is that he wants to teach his son so he can pass on the stories from his family who were alive nearby on that tragic day. They're now tour guides in Hiroshima.
At age 92, Yuji’s great uncle shares his story of the day he will never forget. He lived in Kure city near by, saw the mushroom cloud and went into the city to help. His account is graphic, the scene is grim and real.
The city cannot erase it’s past but it can move on and write the next chapter in its history and I think that is where Hiroshima is today. Tourism to the city is increasing, many international visitors stop by Hiroshima to understand what happened on that day, pay their respects, and tours like the one with Yuji and Magical Trip I took is a way to understand just how much the city changed that day and how it’s re-invented itself since. I hope you can feel something for Hiroshima and if you are in Japan, it's a must visit destination.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) (UNESCO/NHK)
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945. Through the efforts of many people, including those of the city of Hiroshima, it has been preserved in the same state as immediately after the bombing. Not only is it a stark and powerful symbol of the most destructive force ever created by humankind; it also expresses the hope for world peace ...

The Secret of Nagasaki
Real Secret is that the Ground Zero was Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki
why monument in Hiroshima ? why No monument in Nagasaki ?
Two types of atomic bombs uranium & plutonium
THE BOMB with uranium to Hiroshima was made by Nazi Germany ?
Manhattan Project and plutonium type ? Nazi Germany and uranium type ? Even William Leonard Laurence were not allowed to see Hiroshima.
For the plan change, Nagasaki mayor had received a state guest treatment from the US.
Nagasaki mayor did not understand the background at all.
There is a great irony in this background.
Construction of the original Urakami Cathedral, a brick Neo-Romanesque building, began in 1895, after a long-standing ban on Christianity was lifted.
In 1865, the French priest Bernard Petitjean discovered that almost all the Urakami villagers were Christian. Between 1869 and 1873, over 3600 villagers were banished.
During their exile, 650 died martyrs. The persecuted Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christians) came back to their home village from 7 years exile in 1873, and decided to construct their own church.
They purchased the land of the village chief where the humiliating interrogations had taken place for two centuries. The annual fumi-e interrogations required those present to tread upon an icon of the Virgin Mary or Jesus. They thought the place was appropriate considering their memory of the long persecution. Construction of the building was started by Father Francine and was completed under the direction of Father Regani. The frontal twin spires stood 64 meters high were constructed in 1875. When completed in 1925 (Taishō 14), it was the largest Catholic church in East Asia.
The atomic bomb that fell on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 detonated in Urakami only 500 m (1640 ft) from the cathedral, completely destroying it. As the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) was near, Mass was held on the day and was well attended. The resultant collapse and heat-wave cindered and buried all those present in the Cathedral. The destruction of the cathedral hit the religious community of Nagasaki the hardest, as they viewed it as a loss of spirituality. It had such an impact, that famous playwright Tanaka Chikao wrote his most successful play, Head of Mary, about the efforts of Christians in Nagasaki to reconstitute their faith by rebuilding the Virgin Mary.
A replacement was built in 1959, after a serious debate between the city government and the congregation. The city government suggested preserving the destroyed cathedral as a heritage site, and offered an alternate site for a new church.
However, the decision to preserve the destroyed cathedral was suddenly changed dramatically by Nagasaki mayor's decision.
The destroyed cathedral which was the largest Catholic church in East Asia, was removed.
Nagasaki should have been chosen as the last target place by the Christian country (US) ???
US decision makers did not care about the background at all ?
Protestant vs. Catholic ?
Decision-makers were not Christian ?
No information about Nagasaki ?

BONN – Japan won UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status for 23 of its modern industrial sites after conceding to South Korea’s demand that the registration make clear some of the locations used forced laborers from the Korean Peninsula.
At Sunday’s UNESCO committee meeting, Japanese representative Kuni Sato acknowledged Koreans “were brought against their will and were forced to work under severe conditions” at some of the Japanese industrial sites.
Sato said a large number of people from the Korean Peninsula were forced to work at some of the facilities against their will during the 1940s.
Sato also said Japan is prepared to take steps to remember the victims, including setting up an information center.
In addition to the “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution,” eight historical sites in South Korea, including the Gongsan-Seong Fortress of the Baekje Dynasty, will be added to the list.
The committee made the decision at a meeting in Bonn, Germany, on the facilities in eight Japanese prefectures, which represent Japan’s industrialization over just 50 years in the late 19th to early 20th centuries by rapidly adopting Western technologies.
South Korea had for years opposed Japan’s UNESCO bid, saying it overlooks Koreans’ suffering at seven of the sites, including a mine on Hashima island nicknamed “Battleship Island.”
South Korea’s backing for Japan at UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee meeting in Germany boosts momentum for a thaw in relations between the two neighbors. Their leaders last month exchanged visits to each other’s embassy on the 50th anniversary of a treaty normalizing ties.
At meeting June 21 of their foreign ministers, Japan and South Korea reached a basic agreement to cooperate on heritage listings of each other’s sites.
The UNESCO committee had been scheduled to decide on the new listings on Saturday, but postponed any decision to Sunday to give Japan and South Korea time to coordinate their positions.
The Japanese sites approved Sunday include the Hashima Coal Mine in Nagasaki, known as “Battleship Island,” and some facilities that are still at least partly in operation, such as the Nagasaki shipyard.
Next year the committee will consider whether to add churches and other Christian locations in Nagasaki and Kumamoto prefectures. In the past two years, both Mount Fuji and the Tomioka Silk Mill were added to the list of World Heritage sites.
The council also asked Japan to report on measures to preserve Hashima and other deteriorating facilities by Dec. 1, 2017.
Historical tensions stemming from Japan’s 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula have undermined ties between the two U.S. allies in recent years, weighing on their trade and strategic cooperation. South Korean President Park Geun-hye has refused to hold a bilateral summit with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe until Japan does more for Korean females forced into sexual servitude for Japanese soldiers during the war. Some of the former “comfort women” are threatening to sue Abe in the U.S. if Japan and South Korea fail to reach a satisfactory deal for compensation.

Japan setting up Hashima Island info center in Tokyo, breaking pledge to UNESCO
정부 군함도 등 일본 '세계유산 후속조치 이행보고서' 유감
Japan's Hashima Island was controversially listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2015.
But the island has a dark history unknown to many outside Korea and Japan.
It's where hundreds of Koreans were forced into slave labor by the Japanese during World War II.
While Japan promised to take measures to help visitors understand the site's full history,... Tokyo's insincere and tricky attitude is coming under fire.
Lee Ji-won has more.
Japan finally seemed to be keeping its promise to UNESCO by revealing its plans to set up an information center to address the history of the Meiji Industrial Revolution sites,...including Hashima Island,... but the Korean government says it sees straight through Tokyo's plan.
Seoul's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its regret on Tuesday over Japan's implementation report on helping visitors understand the full history of the sites.
Citing the agreement Japan made to have the island listed as a world heritage site, the Korean government urged Japan take appropriate measures sincerely, and quickly.
In 2015, Japan had promised UNESCO that it would establish information centers and take appropriate measures to address its forced labor of Koreans on the island and commemorate the victims.
While nothing had been done for the past two years,... Japan on Monday announced it will set up an information center on the Meiji Industrial Revolution sites in Tokyo by 2019.
But this sparked even more criticism among Koreans,.. as the plan of setting up a center over one-thousand kilometers away from Hashima Island is seen as an insincere, reluctant move made to seemingly comply with UNESCO's recommendation.
Moreover, with Japan planning to include the overall history of the industrial revolution, and stories of Japanese workers,... the move is seen to downsize the hardships faced by the Korean laborers.
From 1940 to 1945, between five hundred to eight hundred Koreans were forcibly taken to Hashima Island to work for little pay and hardly any food.

Amazing #Nagasaki...Japan Travel Vlog Part-1 (#Malayalam)
Hi Friends Welcome to My Channel, Dreams of Backpackers

Nagasaki is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan. It became a centre of colonial Portuguese and Dutch influence in the 16th through 19th centuries and the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region have been recognized and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Part of Nagasaki was home to a major Imperial Japanese Navy base during the First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War.
During World War II, the American atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made Nagasaki the second and, to date, last city in the world to experience a nuclear attack (at 11:02 a.m., August 9, 1945 JST.
#Nagasaki was a small fishing village set in a secluded harbor and had little historical significance until contact with Portuguese explorers in 1543. An early visitor was Fernão Mendes Pinto, who came from Sagres on a Portuguese ship which landed nearby in Tanegashima.
Soon after, Portuguese ships started sailing to Japan as regular trade freighters, thus increasing the contact and trade relations between Japan and the rest of the world, and particularly with mainland China, with whom Japan had previously severed its commercial and political ties, mainly due to a number of incidents involving Wokou piracy in the South China Sea, with the Portuguese now serving as intermediaries between the two Asian countries.
For 12 months prior to the nuclear attack, Nagasaki had experienced five small-scale air attacks by an aggregate of 136 U.S. planes which dropped a total of 270 tons of high explosive, 53 tons of incendiary, and 20 tons of fragmentation bombs. Of these, a raid of August 1, 1945, was most effective, with a few of the bombs hitting the shipyards and dock areas in the southwest portion of the city, several hitting the Mitsubishi Steel and Arms Works, and six bombs landing at the Nagasaki Medical School and Hospital, with three direct hits on buildings there. While the damage from these few bombs was relatively small, it created considerable concern in Nagasaki and a number of people, principally school children, were evacuated to rural areas for safety, thus reducing the population in the city at the time of the atomic attack.
