Okinawa Japan ???????? Pottery Village
#okinawa #japanpottery #mylifeinokinawa
Yomitan is an village in an attractive semi-rural area near Kadena Airbase north of Naha. The village that has preserved Okinawa traditional pottery styles through support for its potter's workshops and kilns. The Japan Tourist web site, says there are 45 potters active in the area. So there are working potteries and their shops at every turn. There is a huge range of traditional and artistic pieces to suit every budget and taste, and the costs are generally less expensive than found in the stores in Tsubo Street in downtown Naha. The impressive thing in the village is the number of hill climbing kilns (noborigama) that are still regularly fired several times a year. (Oops I said once, my bad) Anyone with an interest in traditional pottery will find the area fascinating.
Most stores are Yen Only!!

One of the best parts of Naha is this neighbourhood, a centre of ceramic production from 1682, when Ryūkyū kilns were consolidated here by royal decree. Most shops along this atmospheric street sell all the popular Okinawan ceramics, including shiisā (lion-dog roof guardians) and containers for serving awamori, the local firewater.

Hundreds celebrate 'Coming of Age Day' in Okinawa
Four men were reportedly detained by police after being caught riding an illegally modified motorbikes without a helmet while celebrating Coming of Age Day on Sunday in Chatan, Okinawa.
Young kimono-dressed men and women gathered for the ceremony, where officials held speeches on the meaning of adulthood. New Japanese adults were posing for a group photograph when suddenly four men in motorcycles drove in the street of Chatan's Mihama American Village violating traffic rules.
The men allegedly belong to the Japanese 'bosozoku' youth subculture associated with customised motorcycles.
On their way to the ceremony, some reportedly drunk new adults scuffled with the police. The police physically confronted the crowd in order to quell and disperse it.
One of the ceremony participants said that she attended the ceremony thinking of expressing gratitude to her parents, adding after the ceremony, I am planning to give flowers to my parents and say 'Thank you'.
Coming of Age Day is considered a Japanese national holiday: this day celebrates young people who have reached the age of 20, which is the age of maturity in Japan, as youngsters are now legally permitted to smoke, drink alcohol and vote.

A Walk through Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, Japan
The Basic Concept of the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum
In late March 1945, a fierce battle such as has rarely been seen in history took place on these islands. The Typhoon of Steel that lasted for ninety days disfigured mountains, destroyed much of the cultural legacy, and claimed the precious lives of upward of 200,000 people. The Battle of Okinawa was the only ground fighting fought on Japanese soil and was also the largest-scale campaign of the Asia-Pacific War. Even countless Okinawan civilians were fully mobilized.
A significant aspect of the Battle of Okinawa was the great loss of civilian life. At more than 100,000 civilian losses far outnumbered the military death toll. Some were blown apart by shells, some finding themselves in a hopeless situation were driven to suicide, some died of starvation, some succumbed to malaria, while other fell victim to the retreating Japanese troops. Under the most desperate and unimaginable circumstances, Okinawans directly experienced the absurdity of war and atrocities it inevitably brings about.
This war experience is at the very core of what is popularly called the Okinawan Heart, a resilient yet strong attitude to life that Okinawan people developed as they struggled against the pressures of many years of U. S. military control.
The Okinawan Heart is a human response that respects personal dignity above all else, rejects any acts related to war, and truly cherishes culture, which is a supreme expression of humanity. In order that we may mourn for those who perished during the war, pass on to future generations the historic lessons of the Battle of Okinawa, convey our message to the peoples of the world and thereby established, displaying the whole range of the individual war experiences of the people in this prefecture, the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum.
