Lost in naha, Okinawa again this time leaving WWII memorial, underground Japanese naval command
So I went to the WWII memorial in Okinawa. I decided I would take a cab back but couldn't find one so I walked and walked and walked, went into a store, then walked and walked, finally it got dark and I hit the tram stations. Like a cat, I made it home!!!

Monorail Trip to Okinawa Budokan
Check out this video of a trip on the Okinawa Monorail from Asato Station, near Jundokan, to the Okinawa Budokan. To skip the travel portion, jump to the 4 minute mark. This is an amazing facility, built by the Okinawa Prefecture for it's local martial art community.

At the beginning of Januar 2018 we had our honeymoon at Okinawa and took a look around the main island. During this I filmed some videos which I want to share with you in my small Okinawa series.

This is the third and last part of my small series. I take you with us on the hip hop bus tour which we booked for one day and which brought us to Kouri Island, Churaumi Aquarium, Busena Underwater Observatory and Mihama American Village.

Nakijin Castle (今帰仁城) is a Ryukyuan castle or fortress (gusuku) located in Nakijin, the main island of Okinawa and one of the UNESCO World Heritage designated Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
The Nakijin Castle Ruins are located on the Motobu Peninsula of northern Okinawa Island and In contrast to other castles on Okinawa, Nakijin Castle stands in an area of low population density with verdant forests that give the ruins with a unique atmosphere.
Nakijin Castle was constructed in the late 1200s. During the Sanzan Period (1322-1429), Okinawa Island was divided into three kingdoms: the Hokuzan in the north, the Chuzan in the middle and the Nanzan in the south. Nakijin was used as the castle of the Hokuzan king until it was taken over by the Chuzan on their way to unifying the island and forming the Ryukyu Kingdom.
In the ground, there is also History and Culture Center with a small museum displaying items unearthed on the castle grounds, such as Chinese pottery, coins and documents besides exhibiting about everyday life and culture of Nakijin Village.

Admission: 400 yen (castle and museum), 150 yen (museum only)

Access Information:
The Nakijin Castle Ruins are located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern the main island of Okinawa, about 90 kilometers from Naha, and about a ten minute car ride from the Ocean Expo Park.
Via Yanbaru Express Bus
The Yanbaru Express Bus directly connects the airport and city center of Naha with Nakijin Castle. Get off at Nakijin Joseki Iriguchi (今帰仁城跡入口), from where it is a 15-20 minute walk uphill to the castle ruins. The one way journey takes about 2.5 hours with a cost of around 2000 yen. There are six round trips per day. In central Naha, the bus stops at the Prefectural Office (県庁北口), Tomari Port and Furujima Station along the Yurail monorail among other locations.
Via regular buses
From Naha to Nago Bus Terminal, board highway bus number 111. (90 minutes, 2040 yen from Naha Bus Center; 105 minutes, 2190 yen from Naha Airport; 1-2 buses/hour) and transfer to bus number 65 or 66.
Get off at Nakijin Joseki Iriguchi (今帰仁城跡入口, 45-60 minutes, 790-1000 yen, 1-2 buses per hour), from where it is a 15-20 minute walk uphill to the castle ruins.

My October in Okinawa (Part 1)
In October 2018 I took my second voyage to Okinawa, Japan as part of my sabbatical. My experiences included weathering a typhoon, taking part in the largest tug of war in the world, and of course training in karate at the Meibukan Hombu dojo. Part 2 hopefully coming soon....

Okinawa Karate Museum was founded in Yonagusuku, Nishihara town in January 11th, 1987. It was the first museum for karate and kobudo. I started to collect karate related material when I was at a university. The reason why I
decided to do so is because when I was to write a treatise of karate, I couldn't find enough material. People from all over the world have visited this museum.
More than 300 materials are gathered at this museum.

There are a plentiful photo collection of great karate masters. There are some calligraphies of them, too. Here are kobudo weapons. This diagram shows vital spots of human body. Visitors are coming from all over the world. Some
of them left their badges and stickers here for memory. When asked, I sometimes take people on tour to guide karate related sites in Okinawa. I do calligraphy when people want me to. I calligraph the teaching quotation such as Karate ni sente nashi (There is no first strike in karate.)Back in the days, Kanpo (Chinese herbology) took essential role in medical treatment. Kanpo is a part of history of karate. Those equipments are for tanren (karate training). They are for strengthen hands, fingers, feet and legs.
Since karate was developed in Okinawa, one can see abandoned materials of karate on this island. Materials such as great masters' birthplaces,
their gravesites and monuments, so on... In my opinion, Okinawa itself is a karate museum with materials inside and outside of this building altogether.

This small and pretty shrine is located somewhere in Onoyama Koen (Naha,Okinawa). It is quite peaceful; has a small waterfall with some fishes, beautiful flowers and a meditating Buddha statue.

5 Hours in Okinawa, Japan | Travelogue
My first time in Japan lasted only 5 hours, but it was enough to confirm what I'd always known - I love Japan! We stopped at the Okinawa port, where we disembarked from the Princess Cruise ship, got a shuttle to the train station, and headed straight to Shuri Castle, then over to International Street for dinner at Sam's. Photos as usual on my insta! Thanks again, Abigail for bringing me onboard!

March 28th, 2011 Okinawa Prefecture Office in Naha City, Okinawa
On March 28th, 2011, a fashion show for promoting Kariyushi shirt was held at Okinawa prefectural office. Public officers working at the office participated in the show and took on the stage.
A design of Kariyushi wear is similar to aloha shirt. The shirt is popular among office workers in Okinawa.
In 2005, Japanese government started Cool Biz campaign due to reduce power usage of air conditioner. The campaign encouraged office workers to wear casual cloth in summer season. And Kariyushi shirt attracts nation-wide attentions for its unique design and casualness.
The word, Kariyushi means joyful congratulation and happiness in Okinawan dialogue. There are a various designs for Kariyushi shirt.
Please look for your own when you visit Okinawa.
