Nakayama Jinja Shrine 中山神社 @津山市
Nakayama Jinja Shrine
There is Nakayama Jinja Shrine built in 707 in north of Tsuyama city area.
This shrine is 4th oldest and the most prestigious in the area.
There is a small shrine next to the main shrine where monkeys are enshrined.
In addition, the guardian dog is unique, one opening the mouth of the “あ” sound and the other is the “ん” sound.
中山神社
中山神社は、美作国の一の宮として高い社格と農耕の神、牛馬の守護神として広く人々の信仰をあつめてきた。
一宮はその地域の中で最も社格が高いとされる神社のことを指す。
慶雲4年（707年）に創建され、その後戦国時代の天文2年（1533年）に尼子氏の美作攻略のとき兵火により焼失した。
その後永禄2年（1559年）尼子晴久によって再興された。
その構造は室町末期のもので、安土桃山時代への過渡期の特徴を具有し、単層入母屋妻入り造り、桧皮葺 きの本殿は中山造りと呼ばれている。
参道を進み御手洗川の石橋を渡れば津山城の大手二の丸にあった四足門を移した（1834年）表神門、本殿庭には寛文八年（1668年）に津山藩森忠継が奉納した燈籠二基がある。
摂社の一つに猿神社がある。
（神社の境内にある小さな社は、摂社（せっしゃ）・末社（まっしゃ）神社の呼ばれている）
今昔物語に登場する猿を祀っているとも伝えられる神社で、本殿の裏の斜面を登っていった先にある。
牛馬の安産守護に良いとされており、赤い布で作られた小さなサルの人形が沢山奉納されているのが特徴である。
また、狛犬もユニークで、一つは「あ」音の口の開け方をしており、もう一つは「ん」音である。
