Seoul's Nodeul Island revamped into culture and music complex
반세기 외딴섬 노들섬...음악 문화공간으로 재탄생
There's an island in the middle of the Han River in Seoul... that's been practically abandoned for 50 years.
That's Nodeul Island.
No development projects there have ever taken off... but now it's been given new life... as a place for rest and entertainment. .
Kan Hyeong-woo reports.
Sitting in the heart of Seoul's Hangang River,... Nodeul Island is poised to reestablish itself as a popular destination after major renovations have been made to transform the island into a multi-complex.
Since its construction in 1917,... the man-made island served as a popular spot for family picnics until the 1960s, but its popularity waned over the years as multiple development projects tried and failed to reinvent the island.
Now, under the theme of 'getaway from everyday life'...Nodeul Island is ready to make a comeback.
This 3-thousand square-meter green space can be used as an outdoor concert venue or a picnic place with a clear view of Seoul’s Hangang River.
Aside from being able to soak in stunning river views, there are numerous facilities including a bookstore, a lounge bar and a plant atelier, for visitors to enjoy.
This place feels somewhat refined. I don't know if there are many people coming here, but I think it's a good place to chill out. It's very city-like.
We used to only be able to walk around the park over there, but now it's nice to have more places to check out. We also like that it's turned into a place where people can actually come to instead of just looking at the island from afar.
Although visitors cannot park there, 14 different buses stop in the middle of the Hangang Bridge that's directly connected to the island.
The specific bus numbers are posted on Nodeul Island's website.
Most of the island's facilities are open from 11 AM to 10 PM from Tuesday through Sunday... with viewing areas on the roof and in the park open 24/7.

Seoul's Nodeul Island has been rejuvenated into culture and music complex

Time for our Life & Info segment,... where we focus on information useful for your everyday life.
Today we're going to talk about an island in the middle of Seoul's Hangang River... that's been rejuvated as a culture and music complex - Nodeul Island.
We have our Kan Hyeong-woo with us in the studio to tell us more.
OK, Hyeong-woo, fill us in on this island smack bang in the hustle and bustle of the capital.
Mark, so Nodeul Island was artificially put together in 1917 when Korea was building the Hangang Bridge that connects the districts of Yonsan-gu to the north and Dongjak-gu to the south in central Seoul.
It used to serve as a popular spot for family picnics until the 1960s, but it gradually became isolated with mutiple development projects failing to reinvent the island over the years.
After being practically abandoned for about 50 years,... now it's been given a new lease of life as the island reopened as a music and culture complex about two weeks ago.
Under the theme of 'getaway from everyday life',... the island now offers two concert venues - one indoor and one outdoor.
And every weekend until the end of this year, concerts and performances will be laid on to entertain visitors.
Let's take a look at what visitors thought of the renewed island.
Just by watching the video footage... you can see how beautiful it is and it would be a great spot to enjoy the Hangang River.
So it's a wonderful picnic destination,... but what are some other attractions our viewers might want to know about?
As I mentioned earlier, it's a multi-complex now. So there's a lot of other facilities you can enjoy.
To begin with, Restaurants and a convenient store are in place to make sure you don't run out of energy from taking a walk around the island.
A bookstore combined with a cafe and a reading area has been built to give you a break from your busy daily life.
It also has glass doors and glass walls so you can enjoy the river view while you are inside the bookstore.
Plus, there is a plant atelier - basically a plant workshop - where they have classes on how to grow your plants better.
They also sell their plant products so you can check that out.
There's a lounge bar with music playing all the time.
And it's not your everyday pub.
It mainly sells makgeolli - Korean traditional alcoholic beverage which is a milky, lightly sparkling rice wine.
Now before we let you go, tell us the operation hours and how we can get there?
Most of the facilities are open from 11 AM to 10 PM from Tuesday through Sunday... with the viewing areas on the roof and the park open 24/7.
But unfortunately, visitors cannot park there as the island itself isn't that big to begin with. ( )
Instead, there is a bus stop on each side of the Hangang Bridge... 14 different buses pass by.
The bus numbers are posted on the official website of Nodeul Island so you should check them out before making your way there.
If you are more of a walker wanting to enjoy this autumn weather,... take the subway and get off at Nodeul station, line number nine.
It should take about ten minutes to get to the island from there.
If you want to try something new, the Hangang water taxi is also an option.
Well Hyeong-woo, I guess that will do it for now. Thank you for coming in today.
Thanks for having me.
Now, let's take a quick look at some other events that are taking place across South Korea.

Seoul offers free guided tour of Joseon-era city wall under autumn moonlight
Time now for our Life & Info segment where we focus on information useful for your everyday life, especially if you are watching us in South Korea.
The Seoul City Government is offering free guided tours around the old streets and neighborhoods along the stone wall that once protected the capital city from outside invaders.
With the temperatures steadily dropping as we head further into autumn... it's a great way to spend a cool evening with family or friends... all while giving your legs a stretch and finding out more about Seoul's past.
Won Jung-hwan reports.
Some 30 people wait patiently for the start of a free guided tour of the Seoul's ancient wall,… also known as Hanyang Doseong.
With specially chosen heritage experts,… the tour takes participants under the autumn moonlight down old roads and through villages along the stone wall which was built back in the Joseon Dynasty.
The walk could be a bit steep but those on the tour will be able to learn the history of massive stone wall that once encircled the capital city
As visitors walk along the wall,… they get a chance to listen to how the wall, with an average height of seven meters, protected Seoul from 1396 to 1910.
While some parts of the fortifications were destroyed during Japan's colonial rule and the Korean War,… visitors can still feel the wall's grandness.
Following the ridges of Bugaksan , Naksan , Namsan and Inwangsan ,... the four main mountains surrounding the center of Seoul, the trails from the Joseon era provide a different view of the city.
I really enjoyed hearing stories from residents living near Hanyang Doseong. The tour program wasn't only about the history of the wall,… but it also told us how the people in the area are now living together with the ancient wall.
I've been here couple of times, but since I live in Incheon,… it was always hard for me to come during the night. But through such an organized tour program, I was able to not only trek at night, but also learn about the history.
There are two more free tours offered by Seoul this year,… taking place in the evenings of October 15th and 17th.
Only 35 adults can take each tour and spots are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. You can apply via the city's reservation website from 10:00AM on October 7th.

[Peace & Prosperity] Seoul’s N. Korea policy in 2020
Ep.44 Seoul’s N. Korea policy in 2020
문재인 정부 2020 대북정책 방향
In his New Year’s address and press conference, President Moon Jae-in expressed the need to pursue inter-Korean cooperation, independent of the progress made in North Korea-U.S. dialogue. As for specific ways for the two Koreas to work together, Moon proposed strengthening sports exchanges as well as allowing individual trips to North Korea. How are Moon’s proposals being received in the U.S.?
Meanwhile, North Korea has reportedly appointed Ri Son-gwon, a military hardliner with little diplomatic experience, as its new foreign minister. What impact will Ri’s appointment have on future North Korea-U.S. talks and inter-Korean relations?
To break down the latest developments, we are joined by Chung Ku-youn, Professor of Political Science at Kangwon National University. To broaden the perspective, we also connect with guest experts on Skype, including Henri Feron, Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy and Ian Williams, Deputy Director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic & International Studies.

Arts & Culture: Namsangol Hanok Village -- Ice Flower Festival
And now it's time for our final Arts & Culture segment of the week with Lee Tae Ho. Today, Tae Ho will be filling us in on a wonderful winter weekend festival that the whole family can enjoy. Good afternoon, Tae Ho.
Good afternoon, Conn-young.
So many of the holiday festivities are dying down, but there's still something plenty of events to check out.
That's right, Conn-young. Just because the holidays are over, doesn't mean that there is nothing to do on the weekends
The city of Seoul is rife with things to do at any time of the year, such as this, literally, cool festival that I'll be telling everybody about today.
Voted as one of the most beautiful and scenic sites in all of Seoul, the Namsangol Hanok Village, located in Jung-gu, Seoul on the northern base of Mount Namsan, remains open to visitors all year around.
It is a village of Hanoks, which are the traditional houses of the Joseon Dynasty, a period from 1392 to 1897 -- that lasted a whopping five centuries.
Located in one of the five most historically beautiful spots in Seoul, during the Joseon Dynasty it was called Jeonghakdong, which literally translates into The land beautiful enough to attract cranes.
The five Hanoks that are currently situated in the village are the homes of citizens ranging from the middle to upper classes.
And the homes are furnished according to the classes of the time, to better educate visitors of the lifestyles of the different classes during this period of Korean history.
This is great, because I can show my children the lifestyle of our ancestors and their attachments and affections as well, so the children are excited. And the children can see and learn that our grandparents lived in homes like these.
There are a variety of different activities for visitors to enjoy aside from the traditional homes, such as the neoltwiggi, or sea-saw jumping, and the tuho, which is the throwing of arrows into a tube.
There are also a variety of different festivals and events held during the winter season.
The village also holds different special events based on the holidays of the lunar calendar.
For instance, on the upcoming Lunar New year at the end of January, traditional ddeuk gook, a rice cake soup, will be served to 3-thousand visitors over a period of two days.
Here at the Namsan Hanok Village, the 24 divisions of the year are divided up, and during the most important subdivision of seasons, the foods of that season are prepared for tasting and showcasing as well.
And that is not all, the Ice Flower Festival is being held as well right now at the Hanok village.
The festival showcases different ice sculptures that represent different cultural treasures of Korea.
One such sculpture is titled the Tteongme, or rice-cake mallet, which is a scene of the women during the Joseon Dynasty preparing traditional rice cake ... re-created completely in ice.
It's really amazing how big they are and how they look the same as the buildings. We were looking around in the afternoon, we were looking around some old places with ... traditional houses, it's amazing. Some of the sculptures are like real houses ... except in ice.
Another lifelike ice sculpture is the Dabotop Pagoda, located in the Bulguksa Temple, which was built during the unified Silla period.
It known for its unique sculptural style that is not found in either China or Japan.
There is also the sculpture of Cheomseongdae Observatory, in the current city of Gyeongju, which was used during the Silla period to observe the stars and predict good or bad luck for the kingdom.
The beautiful ice sculptures lit up at night offer a perfect finish to a walk around the Hanok Village and would make for a great weekend outing with the family.
The Hanok Village is open year around in the Jung-gu area of central Seoul until 8 PM in the evening. The Ice Flower Festival will run until the 20th of January, or until the sculptures melt -- and this wonderful historic village and park are free to all visitors.
This sounds like a wonderful way to get out and get some air with the whole family.
And the different lights that reflect off the ice make for an absolutely perfect backdrop for photos together with friends and family.
It also seems like a great way to learn more about historic Korean traditions and culture, as well as how the people of the time lived their lives.
That's right, just viewing the way the houses were designed gives you a sense of how different members of the family were separated into quarters that were closest to the areas they would access most frequently.
And the ice sculptures are absolutely lovely too, hopefully the weather holds up and many people can visit.
Well, thank you Tae Ho for this great weekend idea in the city and we will see you again on Monday.
Alright, have a nice weekend.
Winter in Korea
A Love Story, in the Language of Flowers
During winter in Korea, the bare tree branches become covered with snow and despite the chilling weather, winter is a fun-filled season. Korean winters offer a chance to try a wide variety of winter sports, seasonal foods, and attractions that will keep the cold at bay. For the last episode of the Miss Flower series, we present some of the most picturesque winter sites where crisp white snow blankets the ground, tree branches, and ancient palaces.

【4K】세빛섬 Some Sevit | Night Walking Tour in Seoul ????????
Some Sevit is a culture complex made up of three man-made floating islands located near the southern end of Banpo Bridge. The islands were created with the theme of flowers of the Hangang River and represent the view, life, and the earth, as well as a flower in various stages of life. The largest island, 'Some Gavit' symbolizes the view and takes the form of a flower in full bloom. It is a multi-functional cultural facility which can be used as a venue for performances, international conferences, exhibitions and more. The second island, 'Some Chavit' looks like a flower bud, an image of life. A range of cultural experiences and event zones including Beat Square, Youth Woods and restaurants using 3D to bring themes to life are located here. The third and smallest island, 'Some Solvit' takes the form of a seed planted in the earth. This island has water sports facilities and an outdoor garden from which you may enjoy the picturesque scenery of the Hangang River. Around the floating islands are LED lights that create a fantastic night view under the theme of a gleaming light in the mist.
5 years after opening, DDP becomes a landmark of Seoul
개관 5주년, 서울의 랜드마크로 자리잡은 DDP
This year marks the 5th year anniversary of the opening of one of Seoul's landmarks,... Dongdaemun Design Plaza.
And to mark the occasion.... the building opened up some of its hidden spaces to the public.
Lee Min-sun take us there. The giant grey architectural work located in the Dongdaemun district of Seoul is one of the most well-recognized landmarks of the city.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza,... more commonly known as DDP,... is the world's largest three-dimensional amorphous architecture designed by late architect Zaha Hadid. It's built with some 45,000 aluminum panels and has no straight lines or walls.
Since its opening in 2014, DDP has been serving as a cultural hub hosting 186 exhibitions and 478 events year-round. Asia's biggest fashion event, Seoul Fashion Week is also held here twice a year bringing in fashion lovers, designers, and buyers from all around the world.
DDP has become an international landmark. It is one of the most visited spots in Seoul by foreigners. We have had more visitors than we initially expected and have seen DDP contribute to the vitalization of surrounding shops.
To mark its 5th anniversary, DDP is offering special tours to 88 citizens inside the iconic building. Visitors will get a chance to see some hidden places that have never been opened for the public, including the control room, warehouse, and machine room.
Passing through the backdoors, visitors can peek at the behind-the-scenes operations that keep this giant piece of architecture running smoothly.
People can get a better understanding of DDP's unique design by looking at the inside structure of the roof. At a space right below the roof, visitors can see the space frame that sustains the building without pillars.
The highlight of the special tour is going up to the rooftop. The initial design of the building was supposed to allow the public access to the rooftop but that changed when the ceiling got higher during the construction process. While wearing safety gear, visitors can get a rare panorama view of the Dongdaemun area.
Although only 4 special tours are planned for the 5th anniversary, if there's more demand, it could become a regular program. Various exhibitions and events are also lined up to mark the occasion.
Now being recognized as a global design hub, Dongdaemun Design Plaza hopes to expand its role in the local community and help local design businesses in the coming years.

Snow Festa to attract thousands of foreign tourists to Gangwon-do Province
올림픽 레거시, 한류, 눈...강원 스노우 페스타, 겨울철 외국인 관광객 집중 유치
Known as the venue of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Gangwon-do Province is hosting a three month long winter festival Snow Festa.
The festival offers a variety of sports and cultural programs for foreign tourists in a bid to make the region Asia's winter tourism hub.
Lee Kyung-eun reports from Gangwon-do Province.
It is the most anticipated day of their trip to the winter wonderland in Gangwon-do Province.
First, they find a pair of boots and ski binding plates in their size.
Once they finally get out on the snow field, they start learning how to walk, how to stand up when they fall over, and how to make an A-shape on the slope.
From Malaysia to Singapore and Hong Kong, hundreds of foreign tourists come here each day to enjoy skiing as part of their Snow Festa tour.
Participants from East Asian countries are the primary target of this festa as it falls perfectly in time with their school vacation season.
But most importantly, it gives them a taste of winter and snow that can't be had in their countries,…and it is, they say, worth making a whole trip for.
Fall down I think it's quite difficult to stand up. But still very nice I guess.
I came here for skiing, becaue we don't have a chance to see snow in Hong Kong.
For their convenience, ski lessons are provided in various languages while English-speaking staffs are available to help at the tourist information center that has its own separate building.
This ski resort in Hongcheon is just one of 9 venues in Gangwon-do Province that are participating in the Snow Festival, offering sports and cultural programs for foreign tourists.
This large-scale sports tourism is organized by Gangwondo-province in partnership with private and public sectors in a bid to raise the region's reputation as Asia's winter tourism hub.
Based on the themes of Olympic legacy, the Korean Wave and Snow, we've teamed up with the cities and counties within the province to enhance our winter tourism.
Thanks to such collaborations, the festa offers a variety of winter activities across the entire province, such as K-pop concerts, strawberry picking, and ice fishing, as well as skiing.
And the so-called G-shuttle will operate throughout the festa season connecting the tourists from Seoul to Gangwon-do Province.
