Beijing China Travel Guide - Magical Mix of History and Future
Guangzhou or Canton (广州) , the capital of Guangdong Province, is the third largest city in China after Beijing and Shanghai with a population of more than 12 million. Founded in 214 BC, the city has been a springboard for trading, cultural exchanges, many revolutions and reforms, making it an unavoidable stopover to understand what shapes the modern China.
Guangzhou's isolation from the rest of 'typical China' by mountainous topography and early exposure to the outside world has resulted in its unique way of lifestyle, liberal ideas, distinctive cuisine and tremendous wealth. It is no surprise that Guangzhou is a cradle of many reforms and revolutions that changed the fate of China forever. Today Guangzhou still unveils many republic-era sights that help travelers understand modern Chinese history.
Founded in 214 BC, this capital of the richest province is always a mix of new and old. It not only boasts some of the oldest temples in China, a millenarian-old park, an imperial tomb of a southern kingdom and complete preservation of colonial villas and church on Shamian, but it also serves as a showcase of futuristic architectures and autopilot metro on Zhujiang New Town.
Despite its vibrant sight-seeing resources, travelers usually come to Guangzhou to shop and eat. Guangzhou accommodates countless huge markets specializing in almost any made-in-china products, including Chinese tea, herbs, garments, watches, electronics and toys. You will be appalled to see the real prices of those China-made products and the profit your local shops earn by selling them.
Guangzhou is divided into ten districts. Among them, Yuexiu and Liwan, the cradle for the Cantonese culture, has been the city center since the imperial era. Tianhe, which was a farming village decades ago, has been constructed into a new business center with some biggest shopping malls and highest skyscrapers in the city.
For travelers, the most useful road is Zhongshan Road, a 9 KM long highway horizontally cutting through the downtown of Guangzhou. The highway is divided into 8 sections. From Zhongshan 6 Road (中山六路)to Zhongshan 8 Road (中山八路) it covers around 80% tourist attractions and all famous restaurants. This area is well connected by Metro Line 1 from Changshou Lu (長壽路), Chen Clan Academy (陈家祠), Ximenkou(西门口) to Gongyuanqian (公园前)
Yuexiu (越秀 Yuèxiù) — The Zhongshan 6 Road area, which covers the original area of Yuexiu before its expansion in the 2005, has been the very core since 214 AD. Highlights include Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou Museum located at Zhanhai Tower, Orchid Garden, Mausoleum of Nanyue King, Guangxiao Temple, Temple of Six Banyan Trees, Huangsheng Mosque, Beijing Lu Shopping District, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Temple of Five Rams, Shishi Cathedral.
Liwan (荔湾 Lìwān) — On the north of the pearl river makes up the old Guangzhou area and home to the standard Cantonese accent (Xiguan Accent, literally West Gate Accent). Tourist highlights include the colonial Shamian Island, Xiguan Old Houses, Xiangxiajiu shopping Street, Liziwan Lake Park and Chen's Clan Academy.
Tianhe (天河 Tiānhé) is the business district, thriving with many skyscrapers and shopping malls. The newly developed Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城) is a showcase of futuristic urban planning and avant-garde architecture.
Haizhu (海珠'Hǎizhū') — At the south of the Pearl River, the former industrial district has transformed into more residential and business today. It is home to the city's latest landmark Canton Tower and the South Campus of Sun Yat-Sen University
Panyu (番禺 Pānyú) is an area getting more popular among local tourists. Its Lianhua Mountain boosts 100,000 blooming lotus flower and sits a huge Bodhisattva Guanyin statue.
Baiyun (白云 Báiyún) — This district is where the old airport is located. The Baiyun Mountain is a major attraction.
Huangpu (黄埔 Huángpǔ) is home to Huangpu Military Academy.
Nansha (南沙 Nánshā) is a newly developed area at the southern tip of the city.
Luogang (萝岗 Luógǎng) is famous for its plum forest and Tianlu Lake Forest Park.
Huadu (花都 Huādū) is where the New Baiyun International Airport is located.
Zengcheng (增城 Zēngchéng) is famous for its lychee fruit, which are picked in June and July.
Conghua (从化 Cónghuà) is popular among tourists for its hot springs and Tianhe (Heavenly Lake) Recreation area.
( Guangzhou - China ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Guangzhou . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Guangzhou - China

2016 Nanyue King artifacts

2016Museum of Nanyue King Mausoleum

The most beautiful Tai Zhuang Autonomous land ᥖᥣᥒᥰ ᥞᥣᥒᥘᥤᥛᥫᥒᥰᥖᥭᥰᥓᥨᥒ
The Zhuang (simplified Chinese: 壮族; traditional Chinese: 壯族; pinyin: Zhuàngzú) are an ethnic group of people who mostly live in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. Some also live in the Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Hunan provinces. They form one of the 55 minority ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. Their population, estimated at 18 million people, puts them second only to the Han Chinese and makes the Zhuang the largest minority in China. The Zhuang also have their own oral epic, which is known as the Baeu-ro-do.
The name of the Zhuang (Rao) minority used to be written 獞. However, the character also refers to a variety of wild dogs, so it was considered an ethnic slur. In 1949, the animal radical was replaced by the human radical, and the character became 僮. Eventually, the character was replaced with 壮, a character already in existence meaning sturdy or strong.
History
The Zhuang are of Tai origin. The Rao (Zhuang,Tai) peoples developed a unique irrigation system which was useful for growing rice. Long struggles with China to avoid destruction (as they were thought as barbarians by the Han) led the Tais around 1100 AD to migrate south from Southern China to create the Lao, Thai and Shan peoples of Indochina, and even as far away as Assam, India.
The Zhuang did not record their history until the Eastern Zhou dynasty (475-221 BC) of China. The earliest of the rock paintings at Hua Mountain that are attributed to the Zhuang have been dated to this time. The Chinese referred to the area as Baiyue 百越/百粵 (the Hundred Yue - referring to the aborigines of southern China). Eastern Guangxi was conquered by the Han people under the Qin Dynasty in 214 BC. The Hans, to bring the area firmly in their control, built the Ling Canal to link the Xiang and Lijiang rivers and form a North-South waterway.
An independent state known as Nan Yue (Southern Yue) around Canton was created by General Zhao Tuo when the Qin Dynasty collapsed. This Kingdom was supported by the Zhuang until its collapse in 111 BC. The Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD) thought the Zhuang culture was unproductive, so they reduced local authority and consolidated their authority with Military posts at Guilin, Wuzhou, and Yulin.
In 42 AD, the Trung Sisters' uprising was quelled by an army under General Ma Yuan, who sought not only victory on the battlefield but felt true concern for the Zhuang people. He reorganized the Zhuang Local Authority, improved public works, dug canals and reclaimed land to increase production. His work brought the Zhuang into a more modern condition, and temples in his honor can still be seen to this day.
An influx of immigrant Yao people from Hunan after the collapse of the Han Dynasty caused the region to become unstable as the Yao showed hostility to assimilation. The Guiping area of Guangxi, where the Yao settled, would become a hotbed of revolution against Han rule, causing the Zhuang people to suffer terribly, despite their passive stance on assimilation.
Under the Tang Dynasty, Guangxi became part of Ling-nan Tao (large province) with present day Hainan and Guangdong. The noted scholar Liu Zongyuan was prefectural administrator at Liuzhou. Irked by Chinese expansion, however, the Zhuang moved to support the Tai kingdom of Nanchao in Yunnan. Guangxi was then divided into an area of Zhuang ascendancy west of Nanning and an area of Han ascendancy east of Nanning.
After the collapse of the Tang a new Chinese kingdom known as Nan Han (Southern Han), based in Guangdong, gained minimal control over the Zhuang, but the Nan Han Kingdom was plagued by instability and it was annexed by the Song Dynasty of China in 971. The Nan Han rule of the Zhuang was marked by minimal interference in Zhuang affairs by the Chinese rulers.

Guangzhou (Canton) CityGodTemple
The first part of this video shows Daoist priests performing a ritual for a family. The mother has presumably paid a significant fee to ask for divine assistance with regard to her three children’s educational success. This may be a general request, though it is likely that one or more of her children is currently preparing to take a high school or university entrance exam. The first deity that they worshiped was Wen Chang Wang 文昌王, the God of Culture and Literature, who we “met” above at the Daoist Temple in Hong Kong, where he was likewise worshiped for educational success. Next, they moved on to the City God (the main deity of the temple), which in this case is Liu Yan 劉巖, who was the founder of the Southern Han (Nan Han 南漢) kingdom, which sprang up in the half century between the end of the Tang and the beginning of the Song (907-960 CE). The other deities that were worshiped are Yang Jisheng (a Ming Dynasty official who was martyred for his adherence to Confucian moral values) and Hai Rui (a Ming official who would have been martyred for the same reason had the emperor in question not died before the sentence was carried out). Hai Rui is particularly significant because of a Peking Opera called “Hai Rui Dismissed from Office,” which was written by Wu Han in 1961:
Wu’s play was interpreted by the Gang of Four member Yao Wenyuan as an allegorical work, in which the honest moral official Hai Rui representing the disgraced communist marshal Peng Dehuai, who was purged by Mao after criticizing the Great Leap Forward. According to Yao, the corrupt emperor in Wu’s play represented Mao Zedong. The November 10, 1965, an article in a prominent Shanghai newspaper, “A Criticism of the Historical Drama ‘Hai Rui Dismissed From Office’“ (评新编历史剧《海瑞罢官》), written by Yao, began a propaganda campaign that eventually led to the Cultural Revolution. During the Cultural Revolution, the tomb of Hai Rui was destroyed, Hai Rui’s body dug up and incinerated by Red Guards (the tomb has since been rebuilt). Yao’s campaign led to the persecution and death of Wu Han, as well as others involved in related works, such as Zhou Xinfang for his opera Hai Rui Submits His Memorial (wikipedia.org)
The fact that this temple enshrines a southern ruler who revolted against the imperial authority of the north as well as two officials who stood up to an unworthy emperor and his corrupt imperial court is clearly no coincidence. The implication is that Canton (both the city and the province) is the legitimate center of Chinese culture and values, a claim that is widely shared—and more explicitly stated—by the people of Hong Kong. Let it suffice to say that the Cantonese do not necessarily bow to the wishes of the central authorities in Beijing, for as the saying goes “The mountain is high and the emperor is far away” (山高皇帝遠 shan gao huangdi yuan).
Returning to the temple itself, there are three other significant deities in the video. The first (based on the order in which they appear) is Yue Lao Xingjun 月老星君 (a.k.a. Yue Xia Laoren 月下老人, the “Old Man Beneath the Moon”), who is a kind of Chinese cupid that appears at night and “unites with a silken cord all predestined couples, after which nothing can prevent their union” (wikipedia.org). The second is Cai Bo Xingjun (財帛星君), the God of Wealth, who holds a golden scepter and is especially worshiped during Chinese New Year in the hope of securing prosperity for the coming year (wikipedia.org). Finally, the deity holding the male child is Songzi Zhangxian (送子張仙), literally “Immortal Zhang Who Sends Sons.” According to legend, he protected his children by shooting a fierce Heavenly Dog and is therefore associated with the protection of children, though as his name suggests he is also the deity that one prays to for the birth of a son (wikivisually.com).
Also shown in the video are two large murals, which depict the gods in charge of 28 stars and 24 sectors as well as the Dragon Kings of the Four Oceans, the King of the Land, and the Three Stars (San Xing三星) of Prosperity, Wealth/Status, and Longevity (Fu Lu Shou福祿壽). The scrolls were produced by two famous painters and 30 students over a period of six months.
