Northern Thai Food at Huen Phen (ร้านเฮือนเพ็ญ) in Chiang Mai
There are many places to eat northern Thai food in Chiang Mai, but one of the most famous restaurants in the center of the city is called Huen Phen (ร้านเฮือนเพ็ญ). More details here:
Famous throughout central Chiang Mai, and located in a convenient location, Huen Phen (ร้านเฮือนเพ็ญ) serves northern Thai food. The restaurants looks just like a home from the outside, but step inside, and you’ll initially see a buffet of pre-made curries, and then tables and chairs spread out throughout the restaurant. It’s the type of restaurant that looks like it started small, and then just kept expanding and getting larger and larger as more customers started coming.
At Huen Phen (ร้านเฮือนเพ็ญ) I was able to try a few northern Thai food dishes that I had never tried before, so this was my first time. One of the dishes was something called khao ngiaw (ข้าวเงี้ยว (ข้าวกั้นจิ้น), which I actually didn’t know what it was at the beginning. It tastes almost like corned beef mixed with rice, and the triangle of rice was served with crispy garlic, fresh diced shallots, and a few dried chilies on the side. I’m not totally sure the correct eating procedure, but I sort of just combined all the ingredients and toppings into a bite and ate. It was delicious. When I returned home and researched the dish, I figured out they use pork blood to cook with the rice.
Another northern Thai food I tried at Huen Phen (ร้านเฮือนเพ็ญ) was aeb pla (แอ๊บปลา), kind of a steamed fish custard that was full of herbs. The fish was probably seasoned with a bit of red curry paste, and filled with a bunch of Thai sweet basil, before being wrapped up in a banana leaf and steamed to perfection. I really love it, the fish was flaky and moist, and the herbs provided a wonderful freshness. Another northern dish I was eager to try was tam kanun (ตำขนุน) or young jackfruit salad. The jackfruit was plucked into small pieces, then mixed with onions, garlic, and a few herbs and spices. Unfortunately it was a bit on the oily side, but it was very tasty, and it did have some delicious flavor to it. In Isan or in Bangkok, if you go to a restaurant and order a Thai food known as larb, you’ll get a minced pork salad, served room temperature, and dressed with a mixture of lime juice and fish sauce. For northern Thai food, larb is much different. I ordered larb khua moo (ลาบคั่วหมู), a very oily dish of minced pork and some parts, all seasoned with a blend of spices, including some cinnamon, and then garnished with crispy shallots and crispy basil leaves. It was very tasty indeed, but it was extremely greasy, so it wasn’t a dish I could eat everyday. Gaeng ho (แกงคั่วโฮ๊ะ) is a northern Thai dish that was traditionally sort of a stir fry of leftovers from the day before. Today, it’s more of a mix of vegetables and mung bean vermicelli, stir fried up with what tasted to me like tomato sauce.
Overall, I enjoyed my northern Thai food meal at Huen Phen (ร้านเฮือนเพ็ญ) in Chiang Mai, it’s a great local restaurant. The food was a bit on the oily side, so you do need to be prepared for that, but the flavors are tasty and the food is uniquely northern Thai.

Soft Shell Crab (ปูนิ่มผัดพริกไทยดำ) at Fai Klom Thana Restaurant (ร้านไฟกลมธนา)
Fai Klom Thana, a restaurant in Bangkok, serves a marvelous plate of soft shell crab fried with herbs and chilies. Get all the details here:
Located in northern Bangkok, pretty close to the massive PTT headquarters, which is the state owned oil company in Thailand, is a restaurant called Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา). They mostly make stir fried Thai dishes, sort of Chinese influenced, and everything we ate there was quite tasty. The restaurant attracts many people, especially office workers in the nearby buildings. But although Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา) is located right in Bangkok, it’s down a quiet neighborhood street, so it really feels like you’re removed from most of the city - so it’s a nice eating environment.
Anyway, we started off with an order of tod man goong (ทอดมันกุ้ง), small shrimp patties, deep fried to a crispy. I’m not usually a huge fan of patties, so these weren’t my favorite - but they were pretty good for what they were. It sort of tasted like a shrimp hot dog to me, which crispy edges - good but not mindblowing. They were served with a sweet dipping sauce that tasted like honey.
Next came a plate of kana pla kem (คะน้าปลาเค็ม), Chinese broccoli stir fried with salted fish. This was probably one of my favorite Thai dishes I ordered at Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา). The vegetable was stir fried on just the right high fire, so it was cirp and incredibly fresh tasting. The taste of the salted fish contributed nicely to the flavor, and though it was a bit salty, it was extremely tasty.
Similar to Thai tom yum soup, but a bit different, tom klong pla chon tod (ต้มโคล้งปลาช่อนทอด), was an amazing dish we ate here. The difference between Thai tom yum soup and tom klong pla chon tod (ต้มโคล้งปลาช่อนทอด), is that the ingredients, namely the herbs and spices are first fried before adding them to the soup in tom klong. Anyway, it was extremely flavorful and I could taste the lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and those wonderfully fragrant deep fried chilies. The soup was sour, spicy, and extremely soothing.
Ok, finally let’s move on to the boo neem pad prik tai dam (ปูนิ่มผัดพริกไทยดำ), the soft shell crab dish. I had no intention of ordering soft shell crab, but when I saw it on the menu, there was no way I was going to be able to resist - soft shell crab is one of the finest things to eat. The crab was first deep fried, and then it was stir fried with an array of peppers, onions, green peppercorns, and kaffir lime leaves. The soft shell crab (ปูนิ่ม) was so crispy and so flavorful, and what I especially loved was the amazing flavor of the kaffir lime leaves and the strong pungent flavor of the green peppercorns. If there was only one downside, the boo neem pad prik tai dam (ปูนิ่มผัดพริกไทยดำ) was a bit on the salty side, but it was still marvelous delicious and I would definitely eat it again and again.
If you’re ever in the northern part of Bangkok around Chatuchak, Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา) is well worth a stop for lunch or dinner. The food hits the spot.

Nong Stamp (ร้านอาหาร น้องแสตมป์) - Street Food at Phlap Phla Chai Intersection
In Bangkok one evening I went to eat at Nong Stamp (ร้านอาหาร น้องแสตมป์). Get all the details here:
There are endless places to eat street food when you're in Bangkok. Nong Stamp (ร้านอาหาร น้องแสตมป์) is a restaurant located near the Phlap Phla Chai Intersection in Bangkok, near Chinatown. It's a wonderful place to sit outdoors on the sidewalk and enjoy a few dishes.
The restaurant is located in the kuay teow kua gai alley area, just a stones throw from one of the best spots ( and they also serve a seafood version at Nong Stamp (ร้านอาหาร น้องแสตมป์) known as khua gai ruam talay (คั่วไก่รวมทะเล). I decided to eat it for appetizer. It was a plate of wide rice noodles, stir fried on high heat, so they slightly charred on the outside, and mixed with a few different seafood items. The dish was quite good, especially when added with some extra chili flakes.
But for myself, even better than the noodles are the Chinese style Thai stir fried dishes at Nong Stamp (ร้านอาหาร น้องแสตมป์). They have basically any combination of normal Thai stir fried dishes, and you can choose to eat regular rice, or a bowl of khao tom (ข้าวต้ม), which is rice porridge and it common to eat with this sort of cuisine. I decided to go for the khao tom (ข้าวต้ม) this time. To eat, just grab a few bites of the dish, place it over your rice, and then take a bite.
We ordered a few different dishes. Probably my favorite dish of the meal was kanaeng moo krob (แขนงหมูกรอบ), or brussels sprouts stir fried with crispy pork belly. The sprouts were stir fried perfectly, on a really high fire, so they were still nice and crisp, and remained so fresh tasting. The added pieces of small crispy pork belly added to the deliciousness. Overall, it was my favorite dish. Another dish we ordered was the Nahm Liab Moo Sab (หนำเลี๊ยบหมูสับ), minced pork fried with salted Chinese olives. It tasted almost like fried minced sausage, and it was excellent, but it was a little on the oily and greasy side. It's the type of Thai street food that you want to eat rather slowly, just enjoy the salty flavors, and maybe drink a beer or two. The food is salty, but does taste good.
Overall, I liked the atmosphere at Nong Stamp (ร้านอาหาร น้องแสตมป์), and I thought the food was quite good, worth visiting again.
