China honors over 300,000 killed in the Nanjing Massacre during World War Two
Today China is remembering the victims of Japanese aggression during World War Two. Thousands of people gathered at the Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre this morning. Young people recited the Ode to Peace and the Bell of Peace was rung. 82 years ago, the then Chinese capital of Nanjing fell to the Imperial Japanese army. And in the following six weeks, more than 300,000 civilians and unarmed Chinese soldiers were brutally killed. In 2014, China set December 13th as its National Memorial Day, to remember history while cherishing peace.

Over in China, thousands of government and military officials, as well as members of the public, attended the 6th national memorial ceremony to mourn some 300-thousand victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese invaders in 1937.
On Friday in Jiangsu Province, Honor Guards presented eight large wreaths to a memorial altar while teenage representatives read out a declaration of peace followed by citizen representatives striking the Bell of Peace.
Huang Kunming, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party said... the Chinese people keep the history firmly in mind and never forget the past... but cherish peace and building a brighter future.

다시 나온 난징 시내. 우리나라와 마찬가지로 일본의 침략을 받았던 중국의 국민들은 이 역사를 어떻게 생각하고 있는지 궁금했다. 택시기사에게 슬쩍 역사 이야기를 꺼내본다. “내 나이대 난징 사람들은 일본을 많이 싫어할 수밖에 없어요. 외지에서 온 사람들은 일본에 대해 큰 원한이 없을 거예요. 하지만 우리는 난징 현지인이기 때문에 당시 사건에 대한 기억이 깊이 새겨져 있어요” “제 아버지가 1941년에 태어나셨어요. 그때는 할아버지가 살아계셨는데요. 할아버지 말씀으로는 사건 당시 강이 온통 붉은색이었대요. 생각해보세요. 난징 사람들이 일본을 미워하지 않는다고 말할 수 있겠어요?” 난징에는 일본에 대한 크나큰 원한의 기억이 남아있다. 택시는 난징대학살기념관에서 멈췄다. 한국을 식민지로 삼은 뒤 중국과 침략전쟁을 벌였던 일본은 난징에 도착해 대학살을 자행한다. 군인은 물론 아이와 노인까지 무차별적인 살육이 약 6주간에 걸쳐 지속됐다. 이로 인한 피해자는 30만 명에 달했다고 한다. 아시아의 홀로코스트로 불리는 이 사건은 난징 시민들의 마음 깊숙한 곳에 큰 상처로 자리하고 있다. 기념관 내부로 들어가자 한 곳을 둘러싸고 사람들이 모여 있다. 다들 무엇을 보고 있는 걸까. 바로 희생자들의 유골이다. 이 기념관은 학살 희생자들의 시체가 무더기로 발견된 무덤, 일명 만인갱의 터 위에 지어졌다. 실제 유골들이 그대로 전시된 이곳을 걷는 것만으로 당시 학살이 얼마나 끔찍한 것이었는지 느낄 수 있다. 전시관 곳곳에서 마주하는 희생자들의 얼굴 벽 한쪽을 빼곡하게 메운 희생자들의 이름은 이 기념관이 무엇을 기억하고자 하는 것인지 선명하게 전해준다. “이 기념관을 방문하려고 일부러 난징에 왔어요. 제 어머니의 남동생도 그때 불타 죽었거든요. 그 생각만 하면 말도 못 하게 괴로워요. 오늘 희생당한 동포들 얼굴과 마주하는데 정말... 너무 끔찍하고 잔인한 일이에요” 일본군의 난징 침공은 임시정부 요인들에게도 직접적 위협이 됐다. “한번은 적기 야습이 있어서 위험함에도 불구하고 침대에서 일어나 문 밖으로 나섰다” “돌연 벽력이 진동하는 듯한 소리와 함께 내 침실의 천장이 무너져 내가 누웠던 침대를 덮었다” “각처에서 불빛이 하늘로 높이 치솟아 하늘색은 마치 붉은 담요와 같았다“ “중요한 건 일본이 잘못을 인정하지 않았어요. 그렇죠? 두 명이 싸웠는데 한 명이 잘못했다고 인정하면 용서해줄 수가 있겠죠. 그런데 잘못을 인정하지 않았어요” 기념관을 나오는 길엔 평화를 상징하는 동상이 우뚝 서있다. 아픈 역사를 결코 잊지 않겠다는 의지가 새겨져있는 난징대학살 기념관. 역사를 기억하는 것이 평화를 지키는 일임을 기념관은 말하고 있다.

Xi Jinping meets Nanjing Massacre survivors
Eighty years ago, Japanese troops invaded Nanjing and carried out a massacre that lasted for over 40 days. More than 300,000 Chinese people were murdered during this period.
In 2014, December 13 was designated as a national memorial day for the Nanjing Massacre victims.
After the memorial service that was held on Wednesday, President Xi Jinping met with the survivors of the Nanjing Massacre and relatives of foreign friends who helped China in its war of resistance against Japanese aggression. Xi shook hands with everyone and said that history, beautiful or disastrous, needs to be true. Past experience should be a guide for the future, he added.

Nanjing massacre survivor: We only knew killing of our father after Japan's surrender
We only knew the killing of our father and relatives by Japanese forces after Japan's surrender, say two survivors of the Nanjing Massacre. During the incident in WWII, hundreds of thousands of Chinese people were killed by invading Japanese troops. However, the two brothers say, people should bear in mind this part of history, but not hatred.

Nanjing Massacre Exhibition Opens in Caen
An exhibition of historical documents concerning the Nanjing Massacre opened in the French city of Caen on Saturday.
Chinese Ambassador to France Zhai Jun and mayor of Caen Joel Bruneau officially opened the exhibition Common Witness: The Rape of Nanking 1937 at the Caen-Normandy Memorial Center for History and Peace.
This is the first overseas exhibition to display the Chinese collection documenting the massacre since the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added the Nanjing Massacre to its Memory of the World Register last year.
The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders in east China's Jiangsu Province selected 270 photos as well as documents and video records for the exhibition in France.
The exhibition features a large amount of materials from foreigners in China at the time, including missionaries, teachers, and doctors, who witnessed the massacre. These third-party pieces of evidence make the exhibition more convincing, according to Zhang Jianjun, head of the Nanjing Memorial Hall.
The exhibits included photos taken by U.S. clergyman John Magee, as well as photos showing Dr. Robert O. Wilson treating a Chinese boy, who was stabbed in his right leg by the bayonet of a Japanese soldier.
As inscribed in the Memory of the World Program, the collection documents the history of the massacre, which lasted from December 13, 1937 to January 1938, when more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers were killed by Japanese invaders after the city fell into the hands of the Japanese army.
It is the first time we have held such an exhibition in France, or in Europe, and it has a special meaning. We [China and France] were both victims of wars and paid huge sacrifices in wars. We should not forget the wars and history. Remembering history is for cherishing peace today, and creating and maintaining peace for our future generations, said Zhai.
Obviously, these historical materials need to be publicized with great effort, especially for the younger generation. They also need to picture the historical background back then, and that is not easy, said Isabelle, a visitor at the exhibition.
Two things here impress me. One is the use of photos to show the Nanjing Massacre, and that is so real and shocking. The other is the details of the Tokyo trials, which I did not know about before, and I find that interesting, said Justin, another visitor.

We got settled in to our apartment in Nanjing. Our first weekend, we visited Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum, which meant--you guessed it--MORE STAIRS.

The Backdrop: We spent May-July in China (eight weeks in total). For the first month, I co-led a study abroad trip that brought sixteen college students to the Nanjing University of Science and Technology to study beginning Chinese. I also co-taught a Travel Writing class. As part of that trip, we went to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Yellow Mountain, and Slender West Lake. Once the students left for home, my husband Jesse and I traveled around China for a few more weeks. Our travels brought us to Xi'An, Chengdu, Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. It was a life-changing adventure!

China marks 80th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre
(13 Dec 2017) China on Wednesday marked the 80th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre with a ceremony in Beijing attended by President Xi Jinping.
The Chinese city of Nanjing fell to Japanese forces on December 13, 1937.
What followed was a massacre of war prisoners, soldiers and citizens.
China maintains as many as 300,000 people were killed; Japan says the toll was far less.
