California earthquake wreaks havoc in Napa Valley
A magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck northern California’s famed wine country, Napa Valley, early Sunday, critically injuring three people, including a child.
The tremor occurred at around 3:20 a.m., about six miles southwest of the city of Napa.
Vineyards were damaged, homes were destroyed, and cars were buried underneath rubble.
According to CNN, the child who suffered severe injuries was hurt when a fireplace collapsed near him or her. At least 160 people also suffered minor injuries.
Water mains were destroyed in several locations and repairs could take up to a week.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the power provider for the Sonoma, Napa, and Santa Rosa areas, told reporters that at least 15,000 homes and businesses lost power because of the earthquake, adding that 7,300 of them were still in the dark as of Sunday evening.
Most of the quake’s damage lay in the financial sector, which the United States Geological Survey estimated to be up to $1 billion. Mark Ghilarducci, the director of the California Office of Emergency Services, told a news conference that the quake was not as bad as it could have been.
U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, who represents Napa, echoed the sentiment, telling reporters that, “It’s bad any way you calculate it. But it could have been a heck of a lot worse.”

People often ask me what’s so special about Napa Valley? Well, here are my top 3 reasons why I love living here.
Number 1. There’s always something to do. Do you like hiking? Biking? Spa days? Art galleries? Shopping? Whatever you’re into, you’re bound to find it here. And because of the temperate, Mediterranean like climate, you can often enjoy your favorite activities year-round.
Number 2. We have all the food and wine you could ever want. Napa Valley is a premier foodie destination. We have restaurants to satisfy any palette, including one owned by an Iron Chef. And thanks to the fertile soil in the area, there are what seem like “a gazillion” wineries for tasting and bottle purchases. No matter what type of wine you prefer, you’re sure to find it here.
Number 3. We are close to major cities. If you love the big city life, yet don’t want to actually live in a big city, Napa Valley may be perfect. Napa county itself has only 140,000 residents. However, we are only an hour or so away from places like San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and Sacramento.

Napa County Sheriff’s Office debuts warning siren
Residents who hear the ‘hi-lo’, European-sounding law enforcement siren blaring from a Napa County sheriff’s vehicle should begin thinking about a wildfire or other possible danger.
On Monday, the Sheriff’s Office marked the first anniversary of the Atlas, Partrick and Tubbs fires by demonstrating new disaster communication tools. The sirens that alternate rapidly between high and low pitches—compared to the usual wail—are key.
Sheriff John Robertson explained how rural residents should react when they hear the hi-lo siren.
“It’s time to tune in,” he said. “It’s time to turn on your television, turn on your cell phone, to get those Nixle alerts as long as those towers are still up and functioning. Work with your neighbors. Communicate.”
