Museum & Art Gallery - Chandigarh
Government Museum & Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India - Le Corbusier - 1952
The Government Museum and Art Gallery has the following sections other than the gallery itself:
The National History Museum
The National Gallery of Portraits
The Chandigarh Architecture Museum
Le Corbusier built similar museums in Ahmedabad (India) in 1952 and in Tokyo in 1956. Generous use was made of indirect light sources. A notable feature here is the intensive painting of the walls, black, white, red and yellow. On the west side there is a lecture hall for 200 persons. Of special interest are the water ducts installer on the roof and the huge sprinklers.
Le-Corbusier designed this building as an extention of his already established philosophy, where he conceives of such institution as ever growing and ever expanding. The basic plan of the museum building is based on a grid system of columns and beams and is a square of 165 feet by 165 feet. The main building is divided vertically into three levels. Level 1 has the reception hall, foyer, reserve collection storage, conservation laboratory, temporary exhibition hall, and auditorium. The main galleries are on Level 2. Level 3 has the offices of curatorial staff, research rooms, committee room and library. Communication is through the centre of square by means of a ramp, and additional provision has been made for goods lift and service staircase to carry exhibits to the different levels of the museum.
It is a museum in which lighting by daylight has been used to maximum advantage. Light is admitted from the North East and South West sides through the sky light openings louvered to prevent the direct sun rays from penetrating into the galleries. In addition to this, a system of top lighting is provided along the entire length of the building from North East to South West. Handled with thought and imagination this provides the right intensity of lighting for the correct illumination of various objects of art.

Dayanita Singh Interview: Stealing in the Night
One full moon night, a mysterious burglar broke into the home of renowned Indian photographer Dayanita Singh, and stole all the used film rolls from under her bed. This strange incident became the beginning of the project 'Dream Villa'.
I came to photography through music. In this interview Dayanita Singh (b.1961) explains how she decided to become a photographer because it meant she would not have to follow the general rules of society, but in stead would be independent and free. It was music which taught her to be focused, and it also taught her the importance of knowing when to stop: While people want more.Making pictures is maybe just ten procent of what I do. The rest of it is thinking about the form, the editing and the sequence. In that I am always looking to literature.
Starting in the 1980s Dayanita Singh worked as a photo journalist on assignments for international magazines and newspapers, before switching to documentary-style and portrait photography. Singh first became known for her portraits of India's urban middle and upper-class families. Many of her works are now part of the collection of National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi. Singh has exhibited all over the world and received numerous prices, amongst others the 2008 Gardner Photography Fellowship, given by Peabody Museum at Harvard.
The main focus of this interview is Singh's later colour photography, especially the project which changed her approach to photography completely: 'Dream Villa'. You get seduced by it's beauty, but actually it's not a very pleasent place at all Singh says about the saturated color photographs. In 'Dream Villa' Singh explores how the night transforms what seems ordinary by day into something mysterious and unsettling. Dream Villa is a location in my head she begins.
Dayanita Singh was interviewed by Michael Juul Holm at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 2012.

Artist Raj More has been busy with his canvas since the last 15 years. The Urban city has kept him alive with its fascinating sights & sounds. He chooses urban metros cities as the ultimate destination for his work & loves to explore cities which are very well reflected in his work. The aspiration of urban middle class always inspired him which is reflected in his work. He believes, “ Every Urban City in the world has a soul of its own and it talks to you”, that’s why he always expresses this as the language of his work. His motivation behind his work the involvement and its circumstances, elements like vehicles, animals and beauties. He takes Bollywood beauties as the subject in his work as a multifaceted part of life.He mostly takes the Bull symbol to represent a controlling power of a city, exposing a serious gap between the rich and the poor.Yes, he agrees that he capture violence, but it is religious or from Bollywood, as these are a part of an urban space. He can’t deny all these things and so it appears in his work. Furthermore, humor is the medium of thought in his work.

Marion Colomer : Indian Portraits - Slide Lecture - Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi
Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, The French Embassy in India and the Alliance Française Le Corbusier de Chandigarh organised a slide lecture Indian Portraits by French artist Marion Colomer. This video is a recording of the presentation given by Marion Colomer on 29th September 2008 at Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India
About the Artist
Marion Colomer is a young painter aged 25 years, who lives and works in Paris and New Delhi since 2003. She studied painting, lithography and photography in Paris, in ENSBA (France's top art school). In 2004, she held en exhibition at the Habitat Centre in New Delhi with the help of the French Embassy India of the thousand faces which featured portraits of men living in Malviya Nagar, a local neighbourhood.
Today, through her portraits of people of high society, she has changed her perspective of India. Her original idea was to use the western tradition of paintings in royal courts during the XVIII Century to draw the India of Maharajas, the Hyderabadi noble society, old as well as new. She functions as an official painter, with an emphasis on the settings and symbols of power.
Marion Colomer, when creating a portrait, tries to guess who this person is, imagine his or her life, and paint the person along with his or her environment. Yet, the person remains always elusive, as hidden behind a veil. Her portraits are an explosion of colors, motifs and textures typically Indian, ranging from the richest to the more modest. This profusion is aimed to muddle the viewer who cannot comprehend the portrait in one glance. Marion Colomer would like the viewers to ask themselves the same type of questions she faced when she was painting: Who is this mysterious person?
Marion Colomer often integrates elements of embroidery in her paintings. They constitute a bridge between Indian and French cultures as they refer both to her interest in French haute couture, but also to the typical motifs inlayed in Indians miniatures. She uses embroideries created for this purpose by Indian craftsmen and she appreciates this type of close cooperation in creation, as she explains I really want to work with artist craftsmen, because they represent all that is disappearing in France, but still exists here, in India. She is supported in her project by the French Embassy in India, and notably by Ms Bénédicte Alliot, Cultural Attaché at the Embassy. She is developing this project in her studio at New Delhi.
In her own words ...Even though courtly subjects project a certain image of India, I have no wish to stay in the realm of the exotic. I want to create living portraits, full of contrasts, representing India in the 21st century.
