Korean: 국립한글박물관 was established in 2014 in the Yongsan District of Seoul (South Korea) near the National Museum of Korea.
It showcases the cultural and political context, linguistic structure and evolution of the Korean character system known as Hangul(Hangeul) through exhibitions, research activities, and education.
The museum has a basement level with an auditorium and three ground levels with lecture rooms, a library, a permanent exhibition hall, a special exhibition hall as well as a Hangeul Learning Center and a Children's Museum with a Hangeul playground.
There is plenty of text in English for non-Korean speakers, along with interactive games and audio-visual displays highlighting elements of Hangeul and providing basic reading and writing skills.

Typographer Aaron Bell creates one-of-a-kind typeface.
He's the program manager of Microsoft's Windows Font Team and he's particularly interested in Hangeul, whose creator is well known unlike other languages. His interest in Korean culture and history is so great that he even designed Saja, a typeface inspired by a cursive style from the Joseon Dynasty.

I was invited to attend the opening ceremony of the National Hangeul Museum on October 8, 2014, and had a chance to look around the place before it opened to the public the next day : ) Here's a bit of what I saw. The museum is right next to the 이촌 subway station on Line 4 and a lot of fun to visit and look around!

Bowing with all respect to Our Majesty King Sejong who created Hangeul for Korea in Joseon Dynasty. This museum tells all complete story how Hangeul became a very outstanding language which was not only connected Korean between its own people but also to the world.

National Hangeul Museum opened in October 2014, introducing the history and value of Hangeul. It will offer visitors an opportunity to experience and learn more about the role of how alphabet plays in the daily lives of Korean-speakers worldwide. Located in Yongsan-gu (district) in Seoul, the three-story building covers 11,322 square meters. It is composed of permanent and special exhibition halls, a Children’s Museum, a Hangeul Learning Center, a library and other amenities. Museum visitors can view about 10,000 items and works of art which represent the symbolic and historical meaning of Hangeul, from its creation down through to the present.
Hangeul was created during the Joseon Dynasty in 1443 by the court of King Sejong the Great. Before the invention of Hangeul, the majority of the Koreans were effectively illiterate. Chinese characters known as Hanja were used as their writing system. It was difficult for commoners to learn those characters and only the privileged aristocrats at that time knew how to read and write fluently. In addition, the borrowed Chinese characters and the sounds of the Korean language did not match. Therefore, Hangeul was created so that even the commoners could learn how to read and write. Today, Hangeul has become one of the most scientific languages created in the world.

A museum dedicated to promoting the history and beauty of Hangeul is having a special exhibition showcasing the lives of two people who forever changed the look of the Korean alphabet in the modern era.
Kim Mok-yeon has the details.
King Sejong the Great invented the Korean alphabet in the 15th century, but two key typeface designers from the modern era shaped it into what it looks like today.
Pioneering designers Choi Jeong-ho and Choi Jeong-soon created a blueprint for the Hangeul typeface that's still in use in the present-day, and their creations have made the alphabet more functional and artistically valuable.
They designed fonts like Batang Che, which are now essential in the lives of Koreans.
The designers worked out of a sense of duty, as creating fonts did little to alleviate the hardships they would have faced at the time.
This year, Korea is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the two designers.
To mark the occasion, the National Hangeul Museum is holding an exhibition of their artifacts and achievements.
Nearly 200 items -- including blueprints, newspapers and books -- will be on display through November 17th.
The exhibition is interesting because it shows the various fonts that were created after King Sejong, and the best-looking ones were selected to improve the alphabet.
Through events like this one, the museum plans to raise awareness of the beauty and value of the hangeul alphabet among the general public for the rest of the year.
