Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Baker City, Oregon (2018)
Visiting Eastern Oregon should include a stop at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center just outside of Baker City Oregon along Interstate 84. The Interpretive Center sits on top of Flagstaff Hill overlooking the Oregon Trail. You can still walk along ruts of the wagons, that crossed the Oregon Trail, which are still visible in this area.

Grant's Getaways: The Oregon Trail
History runs deep across Oregon's varied landscapes, where a treasure trove of places and activities reveal much about our past. In fact, one region in particular offers plenty of hands-on lessons in history that -- with a little imagination -- can transport you to a very different Oregon.
Upriver from Hells Canyon at Farewell Bend State Park (at Brownlee Reservoir) you'll enjoy an oasis of green -- where acres of spreading locust trees provide cool shady relief from the summer sun. This is where the earliest pioneers had to say 'farewell' to the Snake River and move up toward the northwest and Baker Valley. Less than an hour away, near Baker City, the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center provides you with a perspective and context to better understand the region's early days.

Rinker Buck, The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey
This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Rinker Buck, author of the #1 New York Times best-selling book The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey.
“The Oregon Trail” is an epic account of Buck’s four-month adventure, traveling the length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way—in a covered wagon with a team of mules, an audacious journey that hasn’t been attempted in a century. It also chronicles the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country.
Rinker Buck, a prize-winning journalist, is no stranger to grand adventures. His first travel narrative, Flight of Passage, was hailed by The New Yorker as “a funny, cocky gem of a book,” and, with The Oregon Trail, he brings the most important route in American history back to glorious and vibrant life. “The Oregon Trail” has been well received, becoming a #1 New York Times Bestseller, #1 Indie Next Pick, Amazon and Apple Best of the Month.
Quote:
-“Part Laura Ingalls Wilder, part Jack Kerouac, “The Oregon Trail” is an idiosyncratic and irresistible addition to the canon of American road-trip literature.” -- George Howe Colt
“This smart, endearing book is not just about a picaresque and probably ill-advised adventure; it’s a story about us—who we are and how we came to be that way. As he makes his two thousand-mile pilgrimage by cussed mule across the dusty continent, Rinker Buck finds his way deep into our nation’s DNA.” -- Hampton Sides, author, Blood and Thunder and Americana

Oregon Trail Center Turns 25!
On Thursday, May 25, 2017, the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center celebrated its 25th anniversary!
The day opened with remarks from former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts, who cut the ribbon at the grand opening 25 years ago. Attendees also heard from Randy Guyer, Dave Hunsaker, and Shane DeForest from BLM’s Vale District -- and a Congressional proclamation from U.S. Senator Wyden’s office. Immediately following the morning's remarks was a special anniversary encore performance of the living history drama “Fanny” by Joyce Badgley Hunsaker, and live music from Hank Cramer and Friends.
The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center opened Memorial Day Weekend in 1992 with community-wide celebrations. The event followed several years of efforts by community and government partners’ efforts to build a tourism attraction focused on the Oregon Trail and to strengthen the regional economy through tourism.
Over the years, the Interpretive Center has hosted over 2.2 million visitors from around the globe, thousands of school students, tour groups and numerous special events. In addition to permanent exhibits and films portraying the history and legacy of the Oregon Trail, the Center has over four miles of hiking trails and a one mile stretch of the historic Trail route with wagon ruts. For the last 25 years, a staff of interpreters, volunteers, contractors, and partner groups have presented theater programs, living history, special exhibits, activities, and guided hikes averaging more than 500 presentations per year.
The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is located five miles east of Baker City, Oregon on Highway 86. Take Exit 302 from I-84. Call (541) 523-1843 for updates on programs and events or visit oregontrail.blm.gov.
