2018 International Intangible Heritage Film Festival taking place in South Korea’s Jeonju
2018 국제무형유산영상축제 전주에서 개막
There are ongoing efforts to better preserve priceless cultural assets for future generations.
Playing an important part is the Intangible heritage film festival.
Our Han Soo-ah travelled to Jeonju to help us learn what it's all about.
Cultural heritage is not just made of things you can touch, but also intangible heritage like performing arts, oral traditions, knowledge, and skills, which show a sense of identity and cultural diversity.
The International Intangible Heritage Film Festival, which kicked off on September 6th in Jeonju, showcases these intangible aspects of culture that have been captured on film.
“Intangible heritage is everywhere in our daily lives. It’s related to what we eat, what we wear, where we live. But usually people are not aware of it and do not feel the need to inherit it. Since movies are easy for anyone to access, it might help people to feel intangible heritage.”
Many artists and ‘Living Human Treasures’ have visited the National Intangible Heritage Center in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province to take part in the festival. Oh Jung-hae, a Korean traditional musician, gave a special performance to introduce intangible heritage artisans at the opening ceremony.
The opening film ‘The Lady in Number 6: Saved My Life’, is one of twenty-seven films from fifteen countries that will be shown at the festival.
The films range from a 1993 classic to films released this year, and cover a variety of genres, from documentaries to fiction and animations.
As a film maker, I think festivals, any festivals that can deal with cultural heritage is frightfully important...because we are losing so much...the culture, the crafts, the arts and the people...who are getting old and having these marvelous skills and they will, if somebody doesn’t do something they will die… and not pass on these beautiful qualities and skills...
The festival aims to help people share their intangible cultural heritage and preserve their unique values and cultural identity for future generations.
As well as movies, there are plenty of other programs at the festival, like performances by a traditional Korean military band. The International Intangible Heritage Film Festival runs until September 9th in Jeonju.

Intangible cultural heritage is usually harder to notice than objects that you can touch, but it's an aspect of culture that needs preserving for future generations.
One way to preserve it is through film... and the 5th International Intangible Heritage Film Festival aims to do just that.
Our Han Soo-ah went to the southwestern city of Jeonju to find out more.

Jeonju Nightwalk
8.12 전주야행 소개
Jeonju Hanok Village is famous for its collection of extraordinarily well-preserved traditional Korean houses all gathered in one place.
It's no doubt impressive during the day... but under the moonlight it's truly special.
Our Kim Jung-soo took a nightwalk in Jeonju himself.
Jeonju in Jeollabuk-do Province, southwest of Korea, is a globally famous city renowned for its carefully preserved community of over 8-hundred traditional Korean houses, known as hanok.
And designated in 2010 as an international Slow City, the Jeonju Hanok Village welcomes millions of visitors every year, with more than 8 million experiencing the village's attractions in 2015 alone.
The Jeonju Hanok Village usually closes its doors before 8 p.m., but on Friday night, colorful lights illuminated the alleys to serve as the backdrop for a special cultural event.
Dubbed the Nightwalk in Jeonju, the program was organized by the Cultural Heritage Administration in collaboration with the city of Jeonju.
The city would turn invisible at night, but not tonight. We hope visitors can experience an entirely new aspect of the Jeonju Hanok Village and Jeonju city as a whole with the various performances and attractions we have prepared.
Just like what the mayor said, visitors can freely stray off from the designated paths and enter specially arranged buildings within the village.
The Gyeonggijeon Hall is one example. The site usually functions as a quiet shrine that preserves the portrait of king taejo from the Joseon Dynasty, but today, visitors can experience a meticulous reenactment of Korea’s traditional tea ceremony also known as darye.
Visitors can learn about the history and customs of traditional beverages as well as have a taste of freshly brewed tea in a timeless ambiance.
“We came to Jeonju because of the architecture…the tea ceremony and everything else…it’s really nice here….”
Dancers donned on their finest traditional Korean dresses, or hanbok, to greet the smiling crowd.
The national intangible heritage center is another must-visit location. Here, spectators are treated with exclusive performances which include jaw dropping exhibitions of tightrope walking, known as jultagi.
What follows is a magical shadow-theatre performance,…which captivates the audience with a story told through light and darkness.
For those interested in experiencing Jeonju Hanok Village at night, the city plans to have one more night-walk event on the last day of September.

Pavilion Tree
Pavilion Tree - Venue of villagers' gatherings and guarding spirit
There are many places these days where people in Korea can get together to catch up and chat. Meeting with people is not a problem nowadays because every neighborhood has cafes and bars, and even small neighborhoods have libraries and residents' centers. But in the past, things were different because villages lacked cozy places for get-togethers. That is why they gathered under so-called pavilion trees. They ate delicious food together and discussed all kinds of issues in the cool shade of a pavilion tree.
For many years, pavilion trees were an indispensable element of every village. This animation tells viewers about the meaning of pavilion trees in a fun and easy way.

From actors and sportsmen to government officials and researchers,... dozens of people from around the world have been invited by Korea's culture ministry to build a global network by taking part in the Cultural Partnership Initiative.
Our Park Ji-won tells us more.
Eighty people from 40 different countries will explore Korea for the next five months as part of the Cultural Partnership Initiative program run by the nation's culture ministry.
Participants will spend that time at 16 different host organizations, including the National Theater of Korea and the National Gugak Center.
Participants will take part in diverse activities from performance to research.
As a taekwondo player, instructor and coach in my country, this is a very good opportunity, because Korea is the main part of taewondo, heart of taekwondo, especially Kukkiwon, and I'm really happy to be here as a CIP member.
I'm a theatrical performer, I make sound with my body, sound effect, for example. And I play Talking Drum as well, traditional drum. I believe I'm gonna explore so much in South Korea.
I came to Korea for research Korean music and culture, and next 5 months, I will be in Jeonju at Intangible Cultural Heritage Center for Pacific and Asia region.
Since 2005, nearly 900 people have participated in the annual cultural exchange program.
It aims to enrich cultural diversity and build networks among global experts... through the sharing of their own cultures.

Celebrate Lunar New Year holiday at Jongno-gu by enjoying free entrance to royal palaces
역사 깃든 종로, 설 연휴 맞아 고궁 및 경자년 전시회 무료 개방
During the four-day Seollal holiday, the city becomes almost, a ghost town with empty roads and many of the stores closed.
Still, there are lots of activities that helps you enjoy the festivities and learn about the traditions and history behind Seollal.
Lee Kyung-eun turns the spotlight to some of these options.
One of the perks of being in Seoul during the quiet holiday is that you can visit the city's many royal palaces for free.
Here, Gyeongbokgung Palace, is one of the five palaces of the Joseon Dynasty and the biggest among them.
From Friday to Monday, it opens its gates to visitors to wander around the grand, ancient Korean architecture that used to be the home of Kings.
For locals, it is a chance to visit the historical site during the traditional holiday.
But many foreign tourists also come here during this time for a unique, exotic experience that cannot be had anywhere else in the city.
I feel really in awe, because I really love historical drama so when I see palace and everything, it really makes me feel like how it looked like in the old days.
It's very intricate, it's much more detailed, and very much more thoughtful design, compare to what anything that I am used to.
The palace has also prepared a special event on the actual day of Seollal which falls on Saturday, and it will hand out copies of traditional paintings that the Korean ancestors exchanged in hopes of bringing good fortune.
Other palaces in the city offer similar events along with free entrance.
If you want to try out Korean folk games like Seollal's iconic board game called Yutnoli and Jegichagi -- which is like hacky sack, visit Deoksugung Palace.
And Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung palaces will also offer the outstanding ornamentation and atmosphere that have been preserved in their entirety since the15th century.
Also at the center of downtown Seoul is the royal shrine Jongmyo.
The simple yet divine and serene Jongmyo Shrine was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its historic and artistic value.
Normally you have to make a reservation at least three days before you visit here, and tours are limited to roughly one per hour. But during the holiday, Jongmyo shrine will be open throughout the day and will be free of charge.
If you want to feel more holiday spirit and learn about 2020, the year of the rat, visit a special exhibition in the National Folk Museum of Korea. Here, everything from traditional painting, proverbs and games featuring rats are displayed to help people understand how the rat represents fertility and prosperity.
The good thing is, you can experience all of these events in one neighborhood by making a trip to the Jongno-gu District.
