The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is a national cemetery located at Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu, Hawaii. It serves as a memorial to honor those men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces, and those who have given their lives in doing so. It is administered by the National Cemetery Administration of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Millions of visitors visit the cemetery each year, and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hawaii.
In February 1948, Congress approved funding and construction began on the national cemetery. Since the cemetery was dedicated on September 2, 1949, approximately 53,000 World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans and their dependents have been interred. The cemetery now almost exclusively accepts cremated remains for above-ground placement in columbaria; casketed and cremated remains of eligible family members of those already interred there may, however, be considered for burial.
Prior to the opening of the cemetery for the recently deceased, the remains of soldiers from locations around the Pacific Theater—including Guam, Wake Island, and Japanese POW camps—were transported to Hawaii for final interment. The first interment was made January 4, 1949. The cemetery opened to the public on July 19, 1949, with services for five war dead: an unknown serviceman, two Marines, an Army lieutenant and one noted civilian war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Initially, the graves at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific were marked with white wooden crosses and Stars of David—like the American cemeteries abroad—in preparation for the dedication ceremony on the fourth anniversary of V-J Day. Eventually, over 13,000 soldiers and sailors who died during World War II would be laid to rest in the Punchbowl. Despite the Army's extensive efforts to inform the public that the star- and cross-shaped grave markers were only temporary, an outcry arose in 1951 when permanent flat granite markers replaced them.
The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific was the first such cemetery to install Bicentennial Medal of Honor headstones, the medal insignia being defined in gold leaf. On May 11, 1976, a total of 23 of these were placed on the graves of medal recipients, all but one of whom were killed in action.
In August 2001, about 70 generic Unknown markers for the graves of men known to have died during the attack on Pearl Harbor were replaced with markers that included USS Arizona after it was determined they perished on this vessel. In addition, new information that identified grave locations of 175 men whose graves were previously marked as Unknown resulted in the installation of new markers in October 2002.
The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific contains a Memorial Walk that is lined with a variety of memorial markers from various organizations and governments that honor America's veterans. As of 2012, there were 60 memorial boulders (bearing bronze plaques) along the pathway. Additional memorials can be found throughout the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific—most commemorating soldiers of 20th-century wars, including those killed at Pearl Harbor.

5/19/15. Nice view of Honolulu from the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl Crater). There's so much construction going on in Honolulu, that locals joke that the crane is now the State Bird of Hawaii. You can see a couple cranes in the video here. At the beginning of the video, you can see Diamond Head in the distance. By the end of the video, we're look at the Honolulu Airport and/or Pearl Harbor in the distance.

The ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific — the focal point for this year’s Veterans Day observance on Oahu — reflected on past accomplishments and present-day challenges for those who serve in uniform. A commemoration was not held at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe this year.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaiʻi which is housed inside Battery Randolph, a former coastal artillery battery, located at Fort DeRussy Military Reservation in Honolulu. The museum's collection contains some World War II armor pieces, an AH-1 Cobra helicopter, and small arms indoors, as well as the battery itself. The battery's main guns were scrapped prior to the inception of the museum.
Museum exhibits cover the military history of pre-Imperial Hawaii and the post-annexation history of US Army warfare in the Pacific hemisphere including World War II, Vietnam, and Korea. The museum also includes a Gallery of Heroes honoring recipients of the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross.
Honolulu, on the island of Oahu’s south shore, is capital of Hawaii and gateway to the U.S. island chain. The Waikiki neighborhood is its center for dining, nightlife and shopping, famed for its iconic crescent beach backed by palms and high-rise hotels, with volcanic Diamond Head crater looming in the distance. Sites relating to the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor include the USS Arizona Memorial.

High above Honolulu, lush lawns growing in the caldera of an extinct volcano are the emotive setting for the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (daily: March-Sept 8am-6.30pm; Oct-Feb 8am-5.30pm), in which are buried the dead of all US Pacific wars, including Vietnam. The Hawaiian shuttle astronaut Ellison Onizuka is also here.
This spot is said to have held an ancient sacrificial temple, and is on TheBus route #15 from town. -
National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific
The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is located in Punchbowl Crater (Pūowaina in Hawaiian--pū-o-waina means hill of placing human sacrifices; in ancient times, Punchbowl was used as a site for human sacrifices). Nestled among the mountains, the cemetery is at once peaceful and removed from modern life, while still offering spectacular and majestic views of downtown Honolulu and, in the distance, Diamondhead Crater.
Since the cemetery was dedicated on September 2, 1949, 34,000 veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam war have been buried there (including famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle). The Honolulu Memorial at the cemetery includes ten Courts of the Missing that are constructed of marble slabs on which are engraved the names of 28,788 military personnel who are missing in action or were lost or buried at sea in the Pacific during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Courts of the Missing flank a wide marble staircase that leads up to the Court of Honor, which bears a statue of Lady Columbia, who is reported to represent all grieving mothers. At the foot of the stairs, there is an inscription that reads:
IN THESE GARDENS ARE RECORDED
THE NAMES OF AMERICANS
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES
IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY
AND WHOSE EARTHLY RESTING PLACE
IS KNOWN ONLY TO GOD
The inscription below the statue of Lady Columbia, taken from Abraham Lincoln's letter to Mrs. Bixby, reads:

Japanese Royals Visit Memorial in Hawaii
(5 Jun 2018) Japan's Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko are visiting a memorial dedicated to nine people killed when a U.S. Navy submarine rammed into a Japanese fisheries vessel off Hawaii in 2001.
The prince on Monday laid a white wreath at the memorial in Honolulu's Kakaako Waterfront Park and spoke to members of the Honolulu community.
All nine killed were on board the Ehime Maru, a training vessel for fisheries students from Ehime, Japan. The submarine's rudder sliced into the ship's hull.
A Navy investigation found the USS Greenville's captain had rushed through mandatory safety procedures while demonstrating an emergency surfacing drill for the benefit of civilians touring the submarine.
Earlier in the day, the couple laid a wreath at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in remembrance of fallen U.S. troops.
