Museum Nasional Republik Indonesia atau Museum Gajah, adalah sebuah museum arkeologi, sejarah, etnografi, dan geografi yang terletak di Jakarta Pusat dan persisnya di Jalan Merdeka Barat 12[1]. Museum ini merupakan museum pertama dan terbesar di Asia Tenggara.
The National Museum of the Republic of Indonesia or the Elephant Museum, is an archaeological, historical, ethnographic, and geographic museum located in Central Jakarta and precisely on Jalan Merdeka Barat 12 [1]. This museum is the first and largest museum in Southeast Asia.

National Museum of Indonesia - Jakarta - Indonesia
National Museum of Indonesia is also recognized as Elephant Museum. It's called as Elephant Museum because there's an elephant sculpture made of bronze medal at the front park of the museum. The sculpture was a grant from King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Thailand who visited the museum in 1871. Around the sculpture there are cannons which position are facing the National Monument (Monas).

Museum Nasional Indonesia juga sering disebut sebagai Museum Gajah. disebut sebagai Museum Gajah karena ada sebuah patung gajah yang terbuat dari perunggu di taman depan museum. Patung itu merupakan hibah dari Raja Chulalongkorn (Rama V) dari Thailand yang mengunjungi museum pada tahun 1871. di Sekitar patung ada meriam dengan posisi menghadap Monumen Nasional (Monas).
Berdirinya Museum Nasional Indonesia diprakarsai oleh berdirinya asosiasi Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen. Asosiasi ini didirikan oleh pemerintah koloni Belanda pada tanggal 24 April 1978. Pada saat itu, ada revolusi intelektual (era pencerahan) di Eropa, dimana orang mulai mengembangkan pemikiran ilmu. Pada tahun 1752 di Haarlem, Nedherland, berdiri asosiasi ilmu (de Hollandshe Maatschappij der Wetenschappen) yang mendesak orang-orang Belanda di Batavia (Indonesia) untuk membuat sebuah organisasi, yang kemudian menjadi Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen (BG).
Salah satu pendiri BG adalah JCM Radermacher yang memberikan rumahnya beserta koleksi buku dan benda-benda budaya yang sangat penting. Hibah dari JCM Radermacher merupakan dasar dari pendirian museum dan perpustakaan. Meningkatnya koleksi hibah membuat pemerintah Belanda membuat Museum pada tahun 1862 di lokasi di mana Museum National Indonesia saat ini berdiri dan dibuka secara resmi pada tahun 1868. Kemudian nama museum tersebut menjadi Museum Nasional Indonesia.
Museum Nasional memiliki lebih dari 140.000 koleksi terdiri dari koleksi prasejarah, koleksi arkeologi, koleksi keramik asing, numismatik / koleksi heraldik, koleksi kolonial, etnografi dan koleksi geografis. koleksi arkeologi dari Museum Nasional Indonesia adalah dalam bentuk benda-benda budaya dari era Hindu dan Budhaism, yang lebih dikenal sebagai era klasik Indonesia. Beberapa benda seperti patung Dewa dan Bhuda Hindu. Sebagian besar koleksi yang dikumpulkan di era kolonial Belanda, yang diperoleh melalui militer dan ekspedisi ilmu pengetahuan, hibah dari seseorang , konsinyasi dan pembelian.

The museum is regarded as one of the most complete and the best in Indonesia. It has preserved about 141,000 objects, ranged from prehistoric artifacts, to archeology, numismatics, ceramics, ethnography, history and geography collections. It has comprehensive collections of stone statues of classical Hindu-Buddhist period of ancient Java and Sumatra, as well as quite extensive collections of Asian ceramics.

National Museum or we usually call it Museum Gajah (Elephant Museum, refer to the elephant statue in its front yard) provides more than the complete documentation of Indonesia's vast histories in areas of culture, ethnographics and arts, more than that the site offer the excitement for the schoolkids to fill their holiday or weekend time.
I estimated that my last visit with my family lasted for about three hours. The artefacts from earlier Nusantara time (circa 400-700 AD) up to modern days' folklore singers memorabilias, are worth to see and even heard the stories told by the museum guide.
To add plus points for the family vacation agenda, the rest rooms and toilets are clean and easily accessed from almost every part of the museum. The air conditioned chambers are also offering another comfort points to the visitor.
Do not miss the view from second floor's windows to National Monument (MONAS) and its park across the street, or scenic view of Jakarta's highrise buildings. Just another plus points !
