The National Museum of Art was originally established at Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1969, but moved to its current location in Seokjojeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace in 1973. Seokjojeon is an important early example of modern Korean stone architecture.

Since opening its door in 1969, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Korea has lived through the history of Korean art. In the process, MMCA established itself as a representative institution of Korean modern art.
The museum’s four branches, including Gwacheon (opened in 1986), Deoksugung (opened in 1998), Seoul (opened in 2013), and Cheongju (expected to open in 2019), each in its own way, will continue to carry out MMCA’s commitment to the art and culture of Korea by enriching the first-hand cultural experience of the viewing public.
Boasting a superb natural landscape surrounding the site, MMCA Gwacheon will be devoted to various genres of visual arts such as architecture, design, and crafts. Located within a historical site, MMCA Deoksugung will showcase modern art from Korea and overseas. In the heart of the city, MMCA Seoul will focus on introducing global contemporary art. With its up-to-date art storage facility, MMCA Cheongju will fulfill the museum’s primary duty to collect, preserve, study, exhibit, and educate. Through its various locations, MMCA intends to function as a cultural platform that encourages communication and cross-pollination of contemporary art with other various disciplines of art, science, and humanities.
MMCA’s foremost mission is to offer a culturally rewarding experience to its visitors.

Deoksugung, also known as Gyeongun-gung, Deoksugung Palace, or Deoksu Palace, is a walled compound of palaces in Seoul that was inhabited by various Korean royalties until the colonial period around the turn of the 20th century. Deoksugung Palace′s Seokjojeon reopens to public after 104 years 104년만에 돌아온 덕수궁 석조전
Deoksugung Palace is one of the most popular palaces in central Seoul.
It′s cheap admission and diverse architecture have locals and expats coming back for more.
And the great news for lovers of the palace is that one of its grandest sub-buildings,… Seokjojen ,.. will reopen to the public next week after undergoing five years of painstaking restoration work.

Completed in 1910,... Seokjojeon is a Western-style stone building,... part of Deoksugung Palace in central Seoul.
Designed by British architect G.R Harding,... the three-story hall was built according to the 18th-century European court style,... and it housed King Gojong′s sleeping quarters and audience rooms.
The building went through so many alterations during more than 35 years of Japanese occupation in the early 20th century,... and following the Korean War.
Seokjojeon opens to the public after five years of restoration work,.. which cost some 13 million U.S. dollars.
We have put items that have been stored at the National Palace Museum of Korea,.. back in their original position,... after thoroughly studying old pictures and doing our own research.
Seokjojeon will be open to the public from next Monday.
Visitors can see over 130 displayed items inside the building,... including about 40 pieces of original furniture set up at the time of the building′s establishment.
Visitors can also watch documentaries about Korea′s modern history and King Gojong, and his royal families.
King Gojong was the final king of Joseon Dynasty that lasted some six-hundred years,... and the first emperor of the short-lived Great Korean Empire,... which was forcefully annexed by Japan.
Historians have shown us that Seokjojeon is not a symbol of foreign annexation,.. but a symbol of King Gojong′s willingness for independent modernization. So this hall is of great historical importance to Korea.
Seokjojeon, a grand building that has bore witness to some of the most vivid parts of Korea′s modern history, is finally back with the Korean people some 104 years after its establishment.
