The National Museum of Korea is the flagship museum of Korean history and art in South Korea and is the cultural organization that represents Korea. Since its establishment in 1945, the museum has been committed to various studies and research activities in the fields of archaeology, history, and art, continuously developing a variety of exhibitions and education programs.
In 2012, it was reported that since its relocation to Yongsan District in 2005, the museum had attracted an attendance of 20 million visitors, or over 3 million annually which makes it one of the most visited museums in the world and Asia and the most visited in South Korea. A poll of nearly 2,000 foreign visitors, conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in November 2011, stated that visiting the museum is one of their favorite activities in Seoul. It is one of the largest museums in Asia.
The National Museum of Korea is located about 1.5 km away from Yongsan Station. It is the largest museum in Korea and houses precious Korean cultural assets that tell the story of Korea’s fascinating history, from ancient times to the modern era.
The museum is also close to Yongsan Family Park, a grassy wooded park with a pond that serves as a natural habitat for various species of birds, as well as over 80 different kinds of trees. The War Memorial of Korea, also nearby, is located next to Samgakji Station, and 1 km from Yongsan Station. It displays a vast collection of wartime relics.
In addition to galleries with a wide array of national and international pieces, the National Museum of Korea is the stage for a number of cultural activities related to collection, preservation, research and analysis, social training, academic publications, intercultural exchange programs, concerts, and more.
Visitors of all ages get the opportunity to participate in a number of educational events and quality cultural programs. For those who prefer to tour at a leisurely pace, the museum grounds have a number of environmentally friendly spaces and rest areas.

The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History opened in 2012; it is right across from the Gyeongbokgung Palace. In fact you can see the Blue House behind the Gyeongbokgung Palace at the foot of Mt. Inwangsan from one of the windows.
The museum presents over 1,500 relics benchmarking Korean history in the arenas of politics, economy, society, and culture, with a focus on the period from the end of 19th century when the nation opened its ports to the outside world to today.
The permanent exhibition consists of four distinct periods in modern Korean history that presents the story of the Korean miracle: how Korea was able to transform itself from one of the poorest to one of the most developed countries in the world in just sixty years. International visitors and especially students who are interested in learning about Korea's amazing progress and its future place in world history will definitely want to make a point to visit.

National Foundation Day of Korea, the Day Korean History Began
October 3 is the National Foundation of Korea that marks the legendary formation of Korea's first state of Gojoseon. Known traditionally as Gaecheonjeol, which translates to the day sky was opened, it is one of the 5 national holidays of Korea, along with Independence Movement Day, Liberation Day, Constitution Day and Hangul Proclamation Day. Beyond merely marking the founding of Korea, the holiday has long been instilling a sense of patriotism and pride in Koreans. Unfortunately, much of the holiday's historical significance is forgotten today. Learn more about Korea's National Foundation Day to remember and cherish this important part of Korean history.

History of the National Museum of Korea
On October 28, 2005, the NMK reopened in its new permanent home in Yongsan, on a site of 307,227 m² (building area: 45,438 m²). Yongsan, the geographic heart of Seoul, is backed by the expansive Mt. Namsan and fronted by the Hangang. Yongsan is also the true cultural center of Seoul, sitting just south of the five palaces of the Joseon Dynasty and the War Memorial, and north of the National Library and the Seoul Arts Center.
The NMK, boasting more extensive and convenient facilities than its predecessors, attracted more than 100,000 visitors in its first three days, reaching one million in attendance after 44 days, and ten million in about three and a half years. In 2009, the NMK attracted 2,730,204 visitors, which ranked as the highest attendance figure in Asia and 10th worldwide (according to the Art Newspaper).
Reborn as a cultural complex that all Koreans can enjoy, the NMK has updated its mission to not only to preserve and display relics, but also to host a variety of programs and cultural events in conjunction with the Children's Museum and permanent exhibitions. Beginning in 2008, the NMK offered free admission to all of its permanent exhibits, thereby enhancing the popularity of the museum and altering the perception that museums are for one-time visits only.
The NMK also reinforced its numerous exchange programs with overseas museums, holding special internationally themed exhibitions, such as The Glory of Persia (2008), Egypt, the Great Civilization: Pharaohs and Mummies (2009), Korean Museums: 100 Years in Remembrance (a 100th anniversary celebration of Korean Museums) (2009), and Gods, Heroes and Mortals: Art and Life in Ancient Greece (2010).

From the days of the Daehan Empire, to 35 years of Japanese colonial rule, the independence movement and a war that almost destroyed the country, the last century has been a tumultuous time for Korea.
With so much ground to cover, our museum visits this episode will be a quick glimpse into the past century. Consider it an accelerated crash course if you will.
