Director Chung Hyung-min of MMCA
After 5 years of anticipation, MMCA Seoul opened on November 13, in the heart of Korea's capital.
The MMCA Seoul building embodies the harmony between tradition and modernity, ordinary life and art. What makes it more remarkable is its location in the heart of Seoul's cultural district. To the west of the museum is the Joseon era palace Gyeongbokgung. Gwanghwamun Square and Insadong lie to the south and Bukchon Hanok Village to the west.
Visitors can see special exhibitions that celebrate MMCA Seoul's opening. They may also be interested in the movie theater, multi-project hall, digital library and many other facilities in the museum. Because it is so conveniently located, over 4000 people are making their way to the museum daily.
Since she became the first female director of MMCA in 2012, Chung Hyung-min has initiated a variety of programs to help MMCA Seoul become a world class museum.
This week on Heart to Heart, we focus on MMCA Seoul, the always approachable, always welcoming museum in the heart of the city. We'll talk to its director, Chung Hyung-min, about her vision and future plans for the newest branch of the national museum.

Contemporary Artist Ritesh's Korean Atelier
Ritesh Ajmeri was born into a family of artists who sculpt traditional Hindu figures. Today, he is a contemporary artist who expresses his thoughts on time and memory through his work. Ritesh, who emphasizes the simple messages he learns from diverse experiences, first discovered Korean contemporary art in China and was enchanted by its scale and charm.
Ritesh first came to Korea as a resident artist of the National Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art's Goyang Studio through the Asia-Pacific Scholarship Program. There, he met his current fiancee Bae Hui-gyeong. For Ritesh, the studio residency was a dream come true. He could focus on his work all day and exchange ideas with other great fellow artists.
Over the past four years, he has held exhibitions in the Goyang Art Museum, the Incheon Art Platform, the Busan OpenSpace Bae, the DMZ International Art Festival, Delhi Exhibit 320, Bucharest in Romania, and Kuala Lumpur. His hard work was motivated in part by his determination to earn Hui-gyeong's parents' permission for their marriage. He wants to show her parents that their partnership has enabled him to grow into a contemporary artist who communicates with the world while moving between India and Korea.
Recently, he found his latest atelier in the cultural city of Ulsan, the hometown of his fiancee and a hub of flourishing contemporary art. Ritesh loves Korean art museums that combine the tranquility of nature and the fragrance of art, and is eager to meet fellow artists.
We peek into his life through an art museum tour stretching from Goyang, his first home in Korea, to Ulsan, his current atelier, to the Seorak Baekgong Museum of Modern Art, where his friends create their art, and to the recent Seoul center of the National Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art.

Classic and modern art exhibitions in Seoul
새해, 놓치기 아쉬운 이색 미술전시회
Two art exhibitions in Seoul are offering quite the contrast experience.
One features works by the great past masters... and the other a preview of what could be the art of the future.
Kim Hyesung walks us through the timeless classics and the interactive, hi-tech pieces.
The canvas shows three women bending over in a field, picking up stray grains of wheat after a harvest.
This is The Gleaners by 19th century French painter Jean-Francois Millet.
To the right, you can also find three of the rough sketches Millet used to develop the masterpiece.
Works by another renowned French painter, Claude Monet, capture how light changes when it passes through the waters of a stream.
This isn't Paris, but a gallery in Seoul now featuring around 130 famous works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
We opened this exhibition to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Orsay Museum in Paris as part of our ongoing cultural exchanges with France. Visitors can find rare pieces of art that have never before been shown outside of Europe.
One of those rare pieces is Vincent Van Gogh's Noon: Rest from Work.
It has a setting somewhat similar to Millet's work, but with a much more vibrant palette.
I learned of Van Gogh's paintings through books. It's great to look at it up and close like this and see how thick his brushstrokes are. It helps me understand more about the techniques of impressionism.
: Connyoung
If you are looking for something more interactive, dynamic or contemporary, you can come to this gallery where the exhibition features works that combine art and artificial intelligence.
Here, artists have collaborated with scientists to show how art looks through a so-called mixed reality.
You can even create your own work.
In a work called Brain Factory, you put on a headset that records your brainwaves while you watch the screen.
Just think of an image triggered by the words that pop up, such as freedom or love, and a monitor shows the changes in your brainwaves.
Then, a 3D-printer renders the data collected from your brain... in a form that looks a lot like a spider web.
You can also play air hockey with a robot that moves around using an artificial neural network.
The goal was to win the machine. I think it's interesting to combine these machines, robots, and human action to produce art piece.
A new form of art, indeed -- one that not only provides viewers with new experiences but also offers some provocative notions of what it means for art and new technology to coexist in the 21st century.

131205 Thurs. - Arts & Culture - The Aleph Project at MMCA Seoul
Subscribe:
And now it's time for our daily Arts & Culture segment with Lee Tae Ho.
Today, Tae Ho is here to tell us about a wonderful exhibition that he recently had the chance to see.
Good afternoon, Tae Ho.
Good afternoon, Conn-young.
So I heard that you visited the brand new branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul?
That's right, I couldn't wait to visit the museum's new facility in the central part of the capital... and the exhibition that I had the chance to see was perfect for my first visit, because the artwork on display was there to give visitors insight into the concept for the brand new building.
What if astronomers, physicists, designers, curators and architects were all to get together to collaborate on one project?
What would be the result?
Would there be an outcome?
Welcome to the Aleph Project, presented by the brand new Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Aleph is a representation of an infinite space that resembles a small white marble and comes from author J.L. Borges short story titled The Aleph.
It is one point in space that encompasses all other points, enabling anybody who gazes upon that one point to see everything in the universe simultaneously and from all angles.
Taking that idea as its inspiration, the opening exhibition at MMCA Seoul is designed to create many different spaces in one.
Around me is the work of architect Hah Tesoc from Tacit Group, at the brand new Seoul branch of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, where everybody from everywhere can come together to experience the joys of arts and culture.
The exhibition is a convergence point for experts from many different fields that have come together to present their knowledge as art.
For example, the Epiphyte Chamber by architect Philip Beasley envisions architecture in the future as a moving and reacting entity.
It was put together by a group of 20 fellow architects, designers and engineers.
I've seen many exhibitions in foreign countries and there are many experimental art exhibitions such as this, and they've all given me new inspiration. That kind of thing has been difficult to find in Korea, but here at the MMCA Seoul there are many exhibitions like this.
And not only are these exhibits just a spectacle for viewing, they react to visitors with moving arms, glowing lights and changing smells, almost as if they were alive.
The Elaboratorium is the perfect exhibition for visitors who want a more interactive experience.
It is the fruit of an unusual and surprising collaboration between art and science, resulting in new works of modern and contemporary art.
I wanted to surprise visitors. My goal was to break through traditions and common notions that a certain thing must only be in a certain place. I wanted to show that, in new surroundings, anything can be held in a new and more beautiful light.
And at this exhibition, Hovering Geometry, visitors can even control and design the space.
A team of media and sound artists worked together to produce the exhibit, which uses both light and sound for an interactive experience and a stunning light show that is all around, yet still consolidated in a single space.
But The Aleph Project is not confined to one space in particular.
It was set up in different parts of the museum to demonstrate the freedom of space.
It is an experience that opens the eyes of viewers to new expressions of art and becomes a catalyst for the imagination.
Arts & Culture: Part 2 - Art exhibitions in Seoul
That certainly does seem like a very exciting new production, and with the taekwondo, it's something that many audiences may not have experienced.
That's right, it combines a great story with the excitement of martial arts to create an interesting and fun production.
Alright, now on to some ideas for Culture Day?
Well, it seems that the brand new Seoul branch of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art was among the top places to visit for Culture Day, boasting an increase of 167 percent compared to the day before.
That is quite impressive indeed.
And since art exhibitions seem like the hot ticket, how about some wonderful and unique art exhibitions that you may not have known about? Let's take a look.
On the rooftop of an art museum under the night sky... a peculiar light can be seen, lit up inside what looks to be a small room.
This is a unique installation titled Disappearing Room.
Visitors can experience what it feels like to disappear, while also enjoying the nighttime scenery.
Visitors can go into the room and really disappear. My intent was to create a slapstick comedy type of experience for visitors to enjoy.
Ten artists have gathered to present unique exhibitions held not inside -- but on top of and around the museum grounds.
And the Disappearing Room is just one part of the exhibition titled 6 - 8 that is currently being held at the Gyeongju branch of Artsonje Center in Gyeongsanbuk-do until March 29th.
The title simply represents the hours that the exhibition can be enjoyed -- from six to eight in the evening.
Also currently on display is the craft exhibition Ohn Ki.
It's a massive collection by over 100 artists and designers, displaying over 360 pieces of artwork, including pieces by master artisan Min Young-ki, whose works have been displayed at the Victoria Albert Museum in England and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
This comprehensive craft exhibition consists of both classic crafts by master artisans and also more contemporary works crafted by modern artists.
The title Ohn Ki depicts the passion of the artist and the perfection of the crafts, which can be experienced at Culture Station Seoul 284 in Jongno-gu, Seoul, until March 9th.
Those are some great ideas for the many fans of art and culture that will be out and about for Korea's second monthly Culture Day tomorrow and of course on the weekend.
And these are just a few of the 1,000 venues that are participating in this month's Culture Day.
So, with the success that this idea seems to be having, do you think the number of participating venues will continue to increase as the year goes on?
Oh, I definitely do see this becoming bigger and bigger.
And take this into consideration -- the months following the year-end holidays, the colder months of January, February and even March are what are considered the slow season for cultural activities.
Yet even at this time, we're seeing a positive reaction from both residents of Korea and participating venues.
This is definitely a great sign of things to come when the culture season really starts picking up as the weather gets warmer.
Alright. Sounds great to me.
Thank you, Tae Ho, and we'll see you again tomorrow.
You're welcome. Have a good afternoon.
The Changing Role of Cafes
커피스 유저 vs 카페
A cafe is a type of restaurant serving various refreshments. However, its role has been changing in recent years as more people are choosing to study and work there. Let’s zoom in on this trend and how today’s cafes are satisfying the changing demands of customers.
Myeongdong in the heart of Seoul... is one of the most crowded areas in the capital with streets full of cafes.
Jeong Hyeon-wook is a university student in his final year, but he frequents cafes more often than his school library.
He goes to a cafe at least three to four times a week on his own to study.
(Korean, )
I feel a little claustrophobic in my school library, but coffee shops have a freer atmosphere that allows me to study with a group of friends
or answer phone calls among other benefits. These convenient elements attract me to study at coffee shops.
( . , , , .)
This cafe franchise introduced quiet-study seating in its cafes last April.
Just like a library, each seat has a partition and power outlet, making it the perfect place to concentrate.
Plus, beverages and snacks are readily available for students and workers as light meals and refreshments.
Then what makes cafe franchises try to attract more of this particular group of customers?
(Korean, )
Customers usually start their work and studies with coffee or other beverages. After focusing on their work for a while, they consume some sandwiches and cakes additionally, which really increase our sales.
(1 . 2 .)
With a growing number of people working and studying, cafes are now being called “coffice,” a combination of cafe” and “office.”
(Korean, )
I study for about three to five hours every time I come to a coffee shop.
( ( ) .)
According to one survey, 4 out of 5 adults answered they have studied or worked at cafes before,
Have You Ever Studied or Worked at Cafe?
* Survey of 361 adults
Yes: 79% No: 21%
Source: Incruit, 2016
while 2 out of 5 university students said that they go to cafes regularly to study.
Why do some prefer to study and work at a coffee house rather than the library or office?
(Korean, )
Cafes are much more open than ordinary office spaces while offering a sense of connectivity at the same time. Therefore, coffee shops are becoming multi-functional spaces where people can enjoy not only good coffee but work and have meetings.
( , . .)
Some small-sizes cafes are have ongoing conflict with coffee shop studiers and workers.
Because they study and work in cafes for long periods of time, sales can suffer.
To minimize their losses, some cafe owners adopted the “No Study Zone” rule or “Laptop-Free Zone” rule.
Efforts have been made to ease the conflicts, and hourly-based cafes are the result.
It charges customers based on time spent, so that both parties can be happy.
The first hourly-based cafe was opened in April 2016. Within a year and a half, there are now 21 hourly-based cafes, which is a testament to the efficacy of the system.
(Korean, )
The number of coffee-shop studiers keeps on growing, yet they feel uncomfortable studying at cafes because they know that they are unwelcomed. This phenomenon naturally created a demand for space that students and workers can freely rent. Libraries and study rooms aren’t preferred due to the restricted environment, so this kind of study caf? offers a perfect option to meet the complex needs of customers.
( . , . . .)
What makes these hourly-based cafes special is the focus on the space itself rather than service of beverages or snacks.
Also, customers are not allowed to talk in person or on the phone in the cafes to ensure the perfect study and work atmosphere.
