Inside The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Pooler, Georgia
The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a modern extensive museum facility located in Pooler, Georgia, in the western suburbs of the historic riverfront city of Savannah. It educates visitors through the use of exhibits, artifacts, archival materials, and stories, most of which are dedicated to the history of the Eighth Air Force of the United States Army Air Corps that served in the European Theatre during World War II.
Among the many World War II exhibits are aircraft including a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber that can be viewed while being restored, a Bf 109G Messerschmitt fighter, and a P-51 Mustang fighter. Exterior post-WW II Cold War aircraft include a B-47 Stratojet, MiG-17 and F-4 Phantom II.

This museum is approx. 30 min. drive outside of Savannah, but worth the drive! My 10yo and 17yo twin boys loved it. We got to see a lot of history and learned much! We had no idea the impact the Mighty 8th played in WW2. The short movie was great and the Vet volunteers were awesome to talk to. My boys loved seeing the actual planes in the hanger. I enjoyed seeing the exhibit on women's contribution to the war. It was a fascinating place. There was a cafe' available for lunch although we chose not to eat there due to our other plans, but it looked like a neat atmosphere.

The Eighth Bomber Command (Re-designated 8th AF in February 1944) was activated as part of the United States Army Air Forces January 28, 1942, at Hunter Field in Savannah, Georgia. Brigadier General Ira C. Eaker took the headquarters to England the next month to prepare for its mission of conducting aerial bombardment missions against Nazi-occupied Europe. During World War II, under the leadership of such Generals as Eaker and Jimmy Doolittle, the 8th AF became the greatest air armada in history. By mid-1944, the 8th AF had reached a total strength of more than 200,000 people (it is estimated that more than 350,000 Americans served in 8th AF during the war in Europe). At its peak, the 8th AF could dispatch more than 2,000 four-engine bombers and 1,000 fighters on a single mission. For these reasons, the 8th AF became known as the Mighty Eighth.

During our last trip to Florida I got some video of the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum. We stop here every time we travel to Florida to get lunch and visit the gift shop located in the museum lobby. I apologize, but I have no video of the exhibits inside the museum because we didn't go inside this year. But, we've been inside before and it's well worth the admission if you're interested in aviation or WWII. Next time you're traveling down I-95, pull off at Exit 102 in Pooler Georgia and visit this fantastic memorial to the US 8th Air Force.
