Fixies First
Think “fixies” and your mind likely wanders to pedaling the streets of Brooklyn, the hills of Portland, or alongside a Dutch canal. Now that Natooke is a name in our address book, fixies will forever be synonymous with biking the back alleys of Beijing.
Opened by famed German cyclist Ines Brunn back in 2009, the shop’s whole ethos is inspiring healthy living and a greener take on urban commuting. It also wants you to adopt that ethos in a way that works for you. Natooke allows you to fully customize and outfit your ideal city ride, and builds the bike for you according to all your specs. The shop is also located in the up-and-coming Wudaoying Hutong which gives it some major street cred. And if you’re traveling to Sichuan province, Natooke just opened a sister shop in Chengdu.
The Beijing custom bike shop is a cycling institution in the Capital city, and was the first fixie shop in the country. Its reputation far precedes it. Natooke had such an impact on the bike culture here, that the shop’s former secret fixie meet ups and rallies garnered too much attention from the authorities and were forced to disband.
Word from the wise, the shop also sells items you can’t find anywhere else, like Respro anti-pollution masks. Trust us, in Beijing, you’ll need ‘em.

Bicycle ride in Chengdu 2015 on a cloudy day.
April 7, 2015 in Chengdu. SunJoy Hotel To Natooke Bike Store. South center Chengdu. Ring Road 2 to Ring Road 1 on Yulin Road. Sorry not very exciting, no music. I am from Edmonton and have been here 3 times, 2006, 2009, 2015. This time I rode my bike a lot of the way from Saigon over 5 months/ 4,200 miles, the last 2 just stayed in Chengdu. I fell in love with this place. So clean, the drinking water is a diff story. The place was changed hugely in just these few years. From cheap bicycles and Suzuki cars to e-bikes, then commonplace luxury cars with few bikes, kind of sad to me. They built these double deck freeways, so bike lanes are basically empty now with old men like me, ha. Bus travel is far more efficient now. Still there were 25+ crashes all over all the way from Saigon. LOL
I boxed up my bike this day to fly home. Bitter-sweet for me. My belly had a bad time the whole time I was there. The staff was great at this bike shop, with Friday night ride abouts with 40 - 50 various other fun people from all over the world. The SunJoy was soso, but I couldn't find anything else with a bathtub. Funny thing is, I never felt crowded here, except by the train station. I speak maybe 20 words Chinese LOL Cars are rather calm now, except at a constrictor point where they will NOT wait their turn.
PS: ..... DO NOT COPY AND RELOAD ANYWHERE.
