ABOUT NATURAL BRIDGES NATIONAL MONUMENT
This is an awesome place for a day hike! Natural Bridges National Monument in southeastern Utah sits high on Cedar Mesa, 6,500 feet above sea level. Intermittent streams have cut two deep canyons and three massive bridges in sandstone formed from what was once the shore of an ancient sea. At each of the bridges, trails descend into the canyons from a 9-mile rim-top loop road. A longer trail meanders along stream beds and the canyon bottoms through oak and cottonwood groves, connecting the three bridges in one loop hike. The monument is somewhat isolated but, for a day trip, you will find it well worth your time.
There is also a campground and picnic areas within the park.
Electricity in the park comes entirely from a large solar array near the visitors center.
In 2007, the International Dark-Sky Association named Natural Bridges the first International Dark-Sky Park, which is a designation that recognizes not only that the park has some of the darkest and clearest skies in all of the United States, but also that the park has made every effort to conserve the natural dark as a resource worthy of protection.[5][6] To date, Natural Bridges has the only night sky monitored by the NPS Night Sky Team that rates a Class 2 on the Bortle Dark-Sky Scale, giving it the darkest sky ever assessed.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

ABOUT RAINBOW BRIDGE NATIONAL MONUMENT NEAR PAGE ARIZONA
The monument is a rainbow-shaped natural bridge of pink sandstone spanning a canyon above a creek that winds toward man-made Lake Powell in southern Utah, U.S., near the Utah-Arizona boundary. The monument is located in the Navajo Reservation, where it lies on the northwestern flank of Navajo Mountain; it is within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
The monument, established in 1910, occupies 160 acres (65 hectares). . It is 290 feet high (the Statue of Liberty could fit underneath) and 275 feet wide. The top is 42 feet thick and is probably the largest natural bridge in the world.
Embedded among canyons carved by streams, the monument is situated on a remote desert plateau and can be reached only on foot, by horseback, or by boat from Lake Powell. The peak of Navajo Mountain, which reaches an elevation of 10,388 feet (3,166 metres), is 5 miles (8 km) southeast. Plants, fed by water seeping from the canyon walls, grow in profusion nearby and include wild orchids and maidenhair ferns.
The bridge has long been a religious site for the region’s Native Americans. Its existence was not documented until 1909, when it was reached by explorers making the difficult overland journey to Navajo Mountain. Access to the area improved dramatically in the early 1970s after the Glen Canyon Dam had impounded the waters of the Colorado River to form Lake Powell.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

Natural Bridges National Monument - Utah
July 12th - 2014
A short detour between Cortez and Moab, west of Hwy 191 puts you at Natural Bridges National Monument. The camp sites are all first come and there are no hook-ups of any kind, but there is a spigot at the visitor center where you can fill a bucket. I'm always amazed at how different many of the National Monuments are in the South West and Natural Bridges has it's own look, feel and appeal. It's also one of the darkest night sky locations and the night we stayed there was the Super moon. We got there around 11am and by noon it was 98 degrees. It was a chore lugging the camera and tripod up and down trails to vantage points in that heat but we survived :-)
Natural Bridges National Monument - A great day trip from Bluff, Utah
Natural Bridges National Monument has three natural bridges situated in such close proximity. A 9-mile loop drive takes visitors past Sipapu (the second largest natural bridge in the world), massive Kachina and delicate Owachomo natural bridges. Trails lead down to each bridge or they may be viewed by walking short distances to overlooks. A 9-mile round-trip trail connects all three natural bridges.

After being downsized from IBM and Readers Digest, I listed homes for sale in upstate NY. After a bad year in real estate and feeling like I had too much stuff I realized that I was watching my life waste away. I sold many of my personal possessions and converted a Ram Promaster cargo van into my new home.
Now, I'll always have my house with me, wherever I go. I can boondock anywhere with my conversion van. I have been to places as far south as Key West and have plans to go as far west as California. I will travel the continental 48 with a free spirit, playing my songs on my guitar for whoever will listen.
I don't know how long I will do this, but will do it as long as I want.
I hope to make many friends along the way.

Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah, USA
Natural Bridges National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located about 50 miles (80 km) north west of the Four Corners boundary of southeast Utah, in the western United States, at the junction of White Canyon and Armstrong Canyon, part of the Colorado River drainage. It features the second and fourth largest natural bridges in the world, carved from the white Permian sandstone of the Cedar Mesa Formation that gives White Canyon its name.
Took these clips while spending part of a day here in September 2008 before driving north to vist Arches Nation Park. There are a lot of nice hiking trails in this park

Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah
Natural Bridges, 6,500 feet above sea level on Cedar Mesa, is home to three spectacular sandstone landforms. The three massive bridges where formed from sandstone that was once the shore of an ancient sea. Sipapu (In Hopi mythology, a gateway through which souls may pass to the spirit world), is the second largest natural bridge in the world. Kachina (named for the dancers that play a central role in Hopi religious tradition), is the youngest of the three. A rock fall in 1992 dropped over 4,000 tons of rock to the valley floor. Owachomo (rock mound in Hopi), is named after the rock formation on top of the southeast end of the bridge. The Bear's Ears buttes are seen on the horizon. Horsecollar Ruin is a well preserved ancestral Puebloan site that is more that 700 years old. There is a campground available with 13 sites. An 8.6 mile loop trail will take you to all three bridges. Shorter trails lead to each bridge from the scenic drive. Slide show by John Wanserski.
