Exploring The Appalachian Trail | North Carolina & Eastern Tennessee
After leaving Georgia at Bly Gap (mile 78), the Appalachian Trail climbs and descends through North Carolina for 96 miles, hits the Tennessee state line at Doe Knob (mile 174), then spends the next 292 miles criss-crossing between the two states. The AT follows this state line until reaching Virginia at mile 466.
The climbs become more significant through North Carolina and Tennessee, but many are designed with switchbacks to ease the pain. Hikers will get above 6,000 feet through the Smokies, meaning early spring NOBOs will likely experience seriously cold conditions in this rugged, scenic national park.
There are thousands of attractions on the Appalachian Trail that are worth seeing.
The Appalachian Trail begins, for most people, on Springer Mountain in the great State of Georgia. The AT ends 2,189 miles to the north at Mount Katahdin, just beyond the 100-Mile Wilderness in Maine.
What attractions on the Appalachian Trail you see will depend on how much time you have to dawdle.
If you don't have time to appreciate spectacular spots along the way, these links to attractions on the Appalachian Trail can help you decide where to visit when you do get a bit of free time.
It happens.
Until you can hit the Trail yourself or with loved ones, take a virtual tour of quaint towns, dandy restaurants, cool People of the Trail, fun festivals and spots that will beckon you onto America's Beloved Path.
Enjoy your time on the Appalachian Trail. From home or in any of the 14 states that are graced by the AT.
I'll take you there.

Best of 2014- North Carolina Nature & Wildlife
Its the start of a new year, and before plunging back into the woods with my camera, I decided to put together a video of some of the best NC nature I captured this last year. 2014 was an exciting, beautiful and action packed year for me. I hiked hundreds of miles of trails, kayaked a bunch of new rivers, and witnessed many phenomenons of nature that have expanded my love for wildlife. I am also very happy knowing that an amount of my nature photography is now being used for conservation efforts in NC. I want to give big thanks to the Piedmont Land Conservancy for showing me their beautiful land they are helping conserve, some of which is shown in this video.
Everything shown in this video was captured during 2014 in North Carolina.

WNC nature Center | NC Weekend | UNC TV
Asheville's WNC Nature Center is more of a learning center than your standard zoo. Visitors can see the animals and plants indigenous to various sections of North Carolina, including noisy coyotes, various amphibians, and even the adorable river otters at Brandon's Otter Falls. The WNC nature Center not only features animals, but even an underground exhibit that highlights the geological functions and elements of North Carolina. The highlight, however, might be the highly endangered red wolves, which the WNC Nature Center protects and saves.

We're very proud to report that we were the #1 Most Wish-Listed Airbnb in Asheville, NC in 2019! (See the article here: As Asheville is the largest Airbnb market in the state, this makes us the #1 Airbnb unit in North Carolina! We'd like to give a big thank you to all our amazing guests over the last five years and especially those who keep coming back year after year. You guys are the best. This is the downstairs unit in a two-unit home. If you'd rather be upstairs then check out our other unit, Crescent Moon Cottage: There is no access between units, each has a separate entrance.
Please read the HOUSE RULES before booking. Most importantly, we only have parking for ONE CAR per unit, and only allow two people maximum per unit, no exceptions! (If you have an extra car you'll have to leave it in a parking garage downtown.)
This private apartment is the ground floor of our our cozy gated home at the end of one lane gravel road. We live in the little house in the backyard. In front of our house is the Crown Plaza golf course and mountain bike trail.
The apartment is fully furnished, including a fully equipped kitchen with a full fridge, microwave, four-burner stove & oven, a coffee maker, a toaster and a blender. It includes Wireless Internet, off street parking for one car, and complimentary coffee and tea. All linens and towels provided. We also provide shower gel, shampoo and hair conditioner so you don't have to pack these bulky items! And yes, there is a hair dryer, iron, and ironing board!
Electric heating with two separate thermostats keeps the apartment at an optimal comfortable temperature in winter. A window air conditioner unit is provided in the summer months.
The bathroom has a custom-tiled double shower with glass doors, underfloor heating (great for keeping your toes warm!) and plenty of storage for your toiletries.
The apartment is not suitable for children as it is not childproofed. The bed is a queen size.
We are surrounded by trees and wild spaces, which makes it perfect for the wildlife that live here. We have raccoons, opossums, red foxes, woodchucks, chipmunks, squirrels and the occasional coyote. Our bird-friendly yard is home to over 20 different species of birds including a resident pair of red-shouldered hawks and a screech owl family.
Our house is only 45 minutes away from the Cataloochee valley in the Smoky Mountains National Park. The valley is known for its elk and black bear population. The east side of the Smokies is great as it is less touristy than further west. It is a great place for a day trip!
Enjoy the benefits of living close to Downtown and recharge your batteries in our tranquil home.

North Carolina Beauty
A couple of years ago, NC Creative Services traveled around North Carolina collecting the sites and sounds of this fine state.
Documenting the beaches of the Outer Banks to the mountains of Asheville, they captured the state at its finest, once again proving that North Carolina is one of the most beautiful and naturally diverse places in America.
Just in time for the warm weather, NC State Creative Services presents this collage of gorgeous North Carolinian locales, available for the first time on our YouTube channel.

Ultimate Fall Color Hike - Chestnut Knob Trail - South Mountains State Park - North Carolina
This was a beautiful hike I did a Saturdays ago in South Mountains State Park in western North Carolina. SMSP is our state's largest park at almost 21,000 acres. I'm hiking with Nikki's cousin, Dr. Sarah Oxendine (veterinarian from NC State). This was Sarah's first visit to this side of the park. The video was shot with a GoPro Hero 8 and a Sony A6500. Sorry for the heavy breathing. It's quite a hike for a 300-pound dude.
