Lerwick is the main port of the Shetland Islands, Scotland, located more than 100 miles off the north coast of mainland Scotland on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland. Lerwick is about 210 miles (340 km) north-northeast of Aberdeen, 230 miles (370 km) west of Bergen in Norway and 230 miles (370 km) south east of Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands.
Lerwick is a busy fishing and ferry port. The harbour also services vessels supporting the offshore oil industry. Significant buildings in Lerwick include Fort Charlotte, Lerwick Town Hall, the Böd of Gremista, Shetland Museum and Archives and Clickimin Broch.
Because of the historic nature of the area, some scenes from BBC's Shetland (TV series) were filmed in Lerwick. Lerwick is served by the Tingwall Airport located a few miles away and Sumburgh Airport that is further south and flies all year to some Scotland destinations.
Northlink Ferries operate a daily overnight ferry service between Lerwick and Aberdeen, regularly calling in to Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. The Shetland Islands Council operate a ro-ro ferry service to Out Skerries and Bressay from a terminal in the centre of the town. Lerwick has three schools; Bell's Brae Primary School, Sound Primary School and Anderson High School.
Lerwick has strong ties with Scandinavian countries, particularly Norway (Lerwick has a friendship agreement with Måløy in Norway), and this is reflected in the street names of Lerwick (e.g. King Harald Street, King Haakon Street). Lerwick is the focus of most events in Shetland, including the largest of the annual Up Helly-Aa fire festivals which takes place on the last Tuesday of January every year.

This mini-documentary explores the wildlife, history and cultures of the Falkland Islands. This UK Overseas Territory is a treasure trove of natural history, with commerson dolphin, enormous elephant seals, penguins and some of the largest albatross colonies on Earth. We follow Charles Darwin's footsteps across the Falklands (for he spent twice as long here as he did in the Galapagos), we find striated caracaras - the most southerly bird of prey. These extraordinary raptors stole items from Charles Darwin and mugged presenter Stewart McPherson whilst filming! While many of the islands of the Falklands archipelago have been impacted by mankind, we visit an island with intact tussock vegetation which enables perhaps the greatest natural wonder of the Falklands; thousands of sooty shearwaters, which return back to their nests en-mass each evening.
This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

Shetland's Seabirds: There is Still Hope
On 3rd June 2018, The Guardian published an article telling of an Eerie silence that had fallen on Shetland's Seabird colonies. While British Seabirds are in decline, all is not lost. This short documentary explores the changes in UK seabird populations over recent years and what challenges seabirds face.

Keeping Brydon Thomason and his family focused on an interview can be a tricky task. It’s not just that Brydon and Vaila have three very lively kids – Casey, Corey and Nula – but that Brydon, in particular, is constantly aware of wildlife stirring around their home. Brydon is the founder of Shetland Nature, a wildlife tour company that runs otter, birding and photography tours of the islands, ranging from day tours to seven-day trips. In addition to co-authoring an acclaimed book on otters, he has become Shetland’s go-to TV naturalist, and a first phone call for producers of shows like Springwatch, Countryfile and Simon King’s Shetland Diaries. You can see his nature photography across the islands, too, from Lerwick cafes to the North Isles ferry.

This mini-documentary explores the wildlife of the British Antarctic Territory - a wedge of Antarctica that includes the Antarctic Peninsula. This UK Overseas Territory is home to spectacular landscapes of ice; glaciers, ice bergs and ice sheets. This icy world is a home for leopard seals, many species of whales, penguins and petrels. On land, the flora of the white continent is sparse, and consists mainly of mosses, lichens and a few small flowering plants, but the few rocky outcrops of the Antarctic Peninsula were selected as sites for research bases of several nations. We visit Port Lockroy, a British base established during WWII. We find patriotic penguins trumpeting under the Union Flag, and the Royal Mail's most southerly outlet. Nearby, we find beaches littered with giant whale bones - the legacy of a century of whaling. North of the Antarctic Peninsula, we visit volcanic Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands. This active volcano is covered with a mix of ash and now, and we find a strange mix of penguins and geothermal hot sands. But how will this unique icy wilderness survive in the warmer world of tomorrow?

A group of orcas appeared very close to the shore of a pod in Scotland- leaving speechless the visitors watching them.
The beautiful animals were recorded swimming, getting as closer to the shore as possible, in South Nesting Bay, Shetland Mainland, Scotland, on 9 of July.
Nick Littlefair, who took the video, was in the area doing the ‘ultimate Shetland tour’, along with a guide and seven other travellers.
He could see the orcas from far away for some time- but when he realised they were getting close to the shore, he decided it was time to start recording.

Discover wild Orkney in autumn.
This is a time of change. Many birds that have called Orkney home for the summer and raised their families here have left. Seabirds like guillemots and puffins have headed out to sea, while Arctic terns have begun their annual journey to the other side of the world. At the same time birds like redwings and many geese arrive. Waders gather in large groups along the shore and take to the air together when startled. The sight of a swirling, shimmering flock of golden plover is breathtaking. For grey seals though, this is when they have their pups. Orkney is an internationally important home as a breeding ground for both grey and common seals (which pup in summer) and a great place to go seal- watching.
