Manzanillo, Colima, Comala | WestJet Vacations
Looking for things to do on your Manzanillo vacation? Join WestJet Vacations as we journey to Colima and Comala, two fascinating towns, rich in history and culture – in the shadow of “the Volcano of Fire”.
Colima, “the city of palms” is just an hour drive from Manzanillo. Stroll through the shade of Colima’s many palm trees and enjoy the colonial scenery, including revolutionary murals and the five-century-old cathedral.
You’ll find famous Colima xolos (dogs) just about everywhere and be sure to stop at the xoloitzcuintle statue, the Dancing Dogs, halfway between Colima and Comala.
Comala is famed as one of Mexico’s “magic towns”. It might be the active volcano nearby – or the local coffee plantation – but there’s definitely something special in the air here. The title of magic town is a fitting description, with Comala’s cobblestone streets and stunning architecture. Comala’s charming local restaurants provide a delicious and authentic experience of Mexican cuisine.
Just two of many great Manzanillo attractions, a day trip to Colima and Comala is an essential part of your Manzanillo getaway.

La Fortuna Nature Reserve: Ecocentro Danaus (sloths, toucans, frogs, and more!)
We wanted to see birds and animals and wow, we were not disappointed! While at La Fortuna, we made a stop at Ecocentro Danaus, a peaceful nature reserve that's home to beautiful wildlife and plants. I highly recommend paying extra for a guide, because we wouldn't have seen a fraction of what we did without our guide.
???????? About me: Hi, I’m Erin! I live with my husband Jesse and our three-year-old daughter Harper in Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico. In the summer of 2018, we sold our stuff, packed our bags, and booked a one-way ticket to Mexico in search of a new life. Thanks for joining our adventure!

ATV Tours in Mexico
If you're really looking for adventure try ATV-ing in Mexico. If you've never been on an ATV, well its just too much fun! Its one of the best ways to get out into the hills and country side and experience the culture and nature firsthand!
On the Pacific Coast of Mexico, in the city of Manzanillo, you'll find Federico Haro of Haro Tours. Hell see to it that your ATV adventure is fun, safe and full of discoveries! Whether your ride is for just a couple of people or a large group, Federico has the staff and equipment to accommodate you.
In no time you'll be tearin it up through the foothills of the Sierra Madres traveling through a twisting and turning arroyo seco (or dry creek bed.) The trail is surrounded by lush green foliage, tropical birds overhead, local domestic animals, and countless butterflies flitting from flower to flower that are blooming in rainbows of colors.
You may stop at Chandiablo and visit a cock fighting ranch (legal in Mexico). Along the way on your 3 ½ hour adventure you never know what you'll come across. You could see the beautiful large Iguanas sunning themselves on rocks or tree limbs, as well as cattle, horses, burros and any number of typical farmyard animals. If you're lucky you might even come across a shy tarantula. Be sure to bring your camera because you never know what you'll come across.
Throughout your ATV adventure your guide, Federico, will be pointing out many items of interest like the mangos, banana plantations, sugar cane, corn fields and lime trees. He is also a native of the area so hes well-versed in the culture and commerce. Federico is fluent in both Spanish and English. If you have a question about anything Federico is sure to have an answer for you.
This adventure is for ages 16 to adult. Prior ATV experience is helpful but not required. Federico will run you through an operational and safety course prior to taking this tour. Goggles, bandanas and helmets are included. Recommended apparel includes shorts or jeans, T-shirts, and tennis shoes. Bring sun screen, and glasses if you need them to drive.

Colima, Mexico
The state of Colima has one of the smallest territorial expansions in Mexico, yet it's strategically located along the Pacific coast in the southwestern region, making it an important destination. The mountains, warm beaches and abundant marine life are reason enough to visit Colima. About 38 km (24 mi) north of the state capital, you'll find two natural wonders that are ideal for ecotourism outings: El Nevado de Colima, a mountain which is 4,330 meters (14,289 feet) above sea level, and the active Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire), which is 3,960 meters (13,068 feet) above sea level. Located in the Volcan de Colima National Park, you can appreciate its awe-inspiring beauty from the town of Comala, which was the setting for Juan Rulfo's novel Pedro Paramo. There you can try excellent regional cuisine, including sweet bread and mezcal punch. About 12 km (7 mi) from there lies Colima, the state capital, which invites you to visit its Jardin Libertad, the Cathedral and the Palacio de Gobierno, where you'll find interesting murals that chronicle Mexico's history. As for archaeological zones, there's El Chanal, where a unique ideology of time was created. There you'll also see graves known as the Tumbas de Tiro. If you head 20 km (12 mi) from the ruins, you'll arrive at Los Ortices, an important religious center. For some fun in the sun, you can visit Boca de Pascuales, a beach that draws many surfers and is known for its excellent fish and seafood. If you're looking for a different kind of outdoor adventure, you can visit the volcanic islands of the Archipielago de Revillagigedo Biosphere Reserve, where you can spy various birds and sea turtles. Another point of interest is the saltwater Cuyutlan Lagoon and it wildlife conservation center. If you're looking for comfort and exclusivity, the port of Manzanillo, known as the Sailfish Capital of the World, is lined with posh hotels. Manzanillo hosts important international sportfishing competitions, as well as golf and sailing tournaments. You can also enjoy kayaking at the Marabasco River and scuba diving at Isla Navidad, a tourist resort that lies northwest off the coast.

Isla Isabela, a small island 18 miles off the coast of Pacific Mexico, is teeming with wildlife and is touted as being the Galapagos of Mexico! In this video, we showcase some of the beautiful birds that call Isla Isabela home. We visited during December 2014 and were joined by Neil's mom, Gail, who flew in from Seattle, WA, and met us in Mazatlan.
If you'd like to read more about our experiences while visiting the island, check out our blog post: A story about our time in Isla Isabela was published in Cruising Outpost in the Summer 2015 issue.
