STORYLINE:
Firefighters on both US coasts battled huge blazes early on Friday, including one that burned homes and forced residents and visitors to flee a resort off the southern California coast as ash rained down.
One home and a few small businesses in the canyons outside Avalon, a Californian town on Catalina Island, burned, but the weather helped firefighters keep most properties safe, fire chief Steven Hoefs said.
Some 1,200 homes were under voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders.
The blaze broke out on Thursday afternoon and grew to 4,000 acres as it fed on dry brush, fanned by a steady wind into the night on the island about 48 kilometres (30 miles) off the southern California mainland.
At least 160 firefighters, aided by four water-dropping helicopters and three retardant-dropping air tankers, battled flames through most of Thursday.
More than 1000 permanent and temporary residents of Catalina Island Thursday night and Friday morning fled from the flames.
More than 100 evacuees were brought to Long Beach high-school, where a gymnasium was turned into a temporary evacuee centre.
The majority of those to be found at the centre on Friday morning were children. Some were clearly frightened by the fires.
We were crying really bad, because we thought we were going to die, recalled Lupita Tovar, age nine.
Water-dumping planes and helicopters helped beat back soaring flames on Friday, giving firefighters a victory that allowed nearly 4,000 evacuated residents to start coming home.

Cuba scuba diving - Sunken Army and underwater tombs - The thrill of diving in communist waters
Subscribe here for more movies about Cuba
Times are changing fast and an ease in the tension between USA and Cuba means Cuba is more and more a tourism destination for Americans.
Besides Havana and other tourist attractions scuba diving in Cuba is something special. You can see in the film why as we show you a selection of the best Cuban scuba diving sites with beautiful and mesmerizing underwater images.
Cuba has a lot of beautiful scuba diving locations among others Cayo Piedras del Norte in Varadero, Avalon Diving Center (Jardines de la Reina),Cueva Azul — Isla de la Juventud, Yemayá — María la Gorda, Ojo del Mégano — Varadero, Banco de Jagua — Cienfuegos, El Acuario — Cayo Largo, El Ebano — Playa Girón (where you ca palso practice snorkeling in a beautiful underwater setting).
Cuba is an island country in the Caribbean. The nation of Cuba comprises the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos. Havana is the capital of Cuba and its largest city. The second-largest city is Santiago de Cuba.To the north of Cuba lies the United States (150 km or 93 mi away), the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands are to the northeast, Mexico is to the west (210 km or 130 mi away), the Cayman Islands and Jamaica are to the south and Haiti and the Dominican Republic are to the southeast.
Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, and with over 11 million inhabitants, is the second-most populous after Hispaniola, albeit with a much lower population density than most nations in the region. It is a multiethnic country whose people, culture and customs derive from diverse origins, including the aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples, the long period of Spanish colonialism, the introduction of African slaves, a close relationship with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and proximity to the United States.
Tourism in Cuba was initially restricted to enclave resorts where tourists would be segregated from Cuban society, referred to as enclave tourism and tourism apartheid. Contacts between foreign visitors and ordinary Cubans were de facto illegal between 1992 and 1997. The rapid growth of tourism during the Special Period had widespread social and economic repercussions in Cuba, and led to speculation about the emergence of a two-tier economy.
Cuba has tripled its market share of Caribbean tourism in the last decade;as a result of significant investment in tourism infrastructure, this growth rate is predicted to continue.1.9 million tourists visited Cuba in 2003, predominantly from Canada and the European Union, generating revenue of $2.1 billion. Cuba recorded 2,688,000 international tourists in 2011, the third-highest figure in the Caribbean (behind the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico).
The Medical tourism sector caters to thousands of European, Latin American, Canadian, and American consumers every year.
Allegations of widespread sex tourism are downplayed by the Cuban Justice minister. According to a Government of Canada travel advice website, Cuba is actively working to prevent child sex tourism, and a number of tourists, including Canadians, have been convicted of offences related to the corruption of minors aged 16 and under. Prison sentences range from 7 to 25 years.

Newport Bay Family Nature Adventure - Newport Beach California
Today we took a local road trip to the Newport Bay Nature Preserve. It's actually a place of contrasts because for all the birds singing and flowers blowing you will get a fly by from the air traffic leaving Santa Ana John Wayne Airport. Here you will meet some of the birds running around and see some of the flowers blowing in the wind at the center. Inside is an exhibit that has a friendly snake and spider. I say friendly lightly because I certainly wouldn't be interested in petting them. If you live in the southern California area and would like some gentle breezes with birds singing and flowers blowing then this is the place for you to take a stroll. If you want more serious adventure then I would suggest hitting some of the other sights that we will spotlight soon.
