Jenny Jones: It's old, it carried troops during the war. Is that right? I find that interesting.
Hugh Jones: I like all the noise, Italian noise. Very good, not used to it.

9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Gino Mazzoni and Silvana Boccardi, Italian tourists:
Gino Mazzoni: The smell of the past.
Silvana Boccardi: He spent most of his school years going from San Miniato to Pisa with a train like this one. It was still working so as soon as he stepped on, he felt he was sixteen, seventeen again.

18. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Stefano Maggi, founder of Nature Train:
The Nature Train is a new experience in Italy that takes advantage of a railroad closed to traffic and used only by historic trains, particularly steam trains and 'Littorine'. But most of all it's a journey, it's a different way of travelling through the countryside, at a slow pace, and appreciate the landscape, nature - there are a lot of beautiful places along the railroad - visit the towns, museums, and so in many ways slowly enjoy - as the slow train of our grandfathers - the Sienese countryside, the Crete Senesi of Val D'Orcia.

21. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Stefano Maggi, founder of Nature Train:
My passion for trains stems from the fact that I'm the son of a train engineer. My father always used to take me on this railroad which was very busy at the time, very crowded with passengers and even with goods. All the goods from Monte Amiata were carried on trucks and, before trucks, on wagons dragged by horses or oxen, and they went to Monte Amiata station and, from there, they left for the international railroad system. As a child I experienced this railroad and then I finally saved it from its shutdown with the Nature Train project.

23. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Antonio Colaci, Italian train lover:
I used to go to high school in Marsala and I took this train, with these same wagons, identical. The 741 was the locomotive, identical to the one that's taking us now, so it was a beautiful dip into the past.

DRIVING THRU ITALY TO FLORENCE, TUSCANY, ROME, POMPEII, SORRENTO & AMALFI, Our Ancient Civilization Trip
Our two week Ancient Civilization trip continues. We leave Greece and Fly to Italy. We start in Florence. Here we stay at the Sina Villa Medici Marriott Autograph Hotel. This property is in a great location for walking everything in the historic area of Florence. We climbed the duomo (make sure to make your reservations as only so many people can climb at once). We visited the Medici Palazzo (house) and walked the Ponte Vecchio (the bridge with the houses on it). We tried to attend church but with a marathon going on we could not make it as the running line trapped us in the historic center. I had the best truffle pasta at Hostaria Il Desco.
After Florence we loaded into our 9 passenger van, which makes total sense in the USA and not so much in ancient cities; and drove thru Tuscany on our way down to Rome. We did the Chianti region which was beautiful, full of charm, and even though it was rainy and cold the hills were still full of color.
In Rome we stayed at the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora, here we had a two bedroom which was fun to be all together. This hotel is next to the ancient wall and close to the Vatican City. The first morning we headed out early to the Vatican City. Here we had a tour guide so we skipped the line into the museum, saw the Sistine Chapel, St Peters Basilica and admired all the marble.
Afterwards we headed toward the Colosseum and had a 2 hour lunch at a restaurant that really knows how to make yummy soup. Gli Angeletti its on Via dell'Angeletto, 3, Roma
After warming up with soup we headed over to the Colosseum ran around for a bit, then took a crazy cab ride back to the hotel.
That night steer being exhausted from a long day we stayed in with room service.
The next morning we packed up and drove down to Pompeii. This was what Turner really wanted to see on this trip. Pompeii was much larger than I ever thought and we spent about 2 hours walking thru the 165 acre complex.
Then we continued on to Sorrento where we had an AirB&B in the heart of Sorrento. The location and space was great. In fact its by a Super Host and overall it was fine and would work for my family of 6 if we returned.
However, I don't know if I will ever go back to Sorrento or the Amalfi coast. I felt like its this hyped up place but in all honesty there really isn't anything special. We all agreed it felt like the whole area had been turned into a destination for cruise ships, the food isn't great and everything about it feels extremely tourist. Solerno at the end of the coast is actually better. Still we had trouble finding well prepared food. We were not on a budget but seriously finding really well prepared food in Italy was difficult no matter what we spent. Its frustrating because you think Italy will have amazing food flowing everywhere but the truth is that because so many areas only cater to tourists I think they lower their quality and change the authenticity to suit what travelers think they want. I had the best luck with soups. The truffle pasta in Florence and actually the pizza crust in Sorrento was really good.
After Sorrento, we drove back to Rome and took a flight to Istanbul. Turkey is a true highlight of this trip.

When ready, browse vacation packages to Tuscany:
#Tuscany is a legendary region in central Italy that stretches from the Apennine Mountains to the west coast, meandering through endless vineyards, medieval towns and the impossibly beautiful cities of Florence, Siena and Pisa.
In contrast with today’s modern world, Tuscany lures travelers with the promise of a warmer, gentler way of living.
Here, high art mingles deliciously with warm sunshine and fragrant wine. History seeps through the cobblestones and small occasions are transformed into the greatest of pleasures.
Around six hundred years ago, Tuscany changed the world forever when economic, cultural and political forces collided, sparking the Renaissance. It was a new way of thought in which art and education were highly prized and the search for happiness, a noble goal.
Although the world has changed much since then, Tuscany’s values hold firm and a #vacation to this region can leave visitors happily spending days and weeks slowly rediscovering them.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

© CLAUDIO MORTINI❀
Su treno a vapore o su littorine d'epoca è possibile, inoltre, scendere in varie stazioni per avventurarsi lungo sentieri, raggiungere pievi, borghi e castelli.
Fermate: Asciano, S. Giovanni d'Asso, Monte Antico, Buonconvento

Cinque Terre: BEST place in ITALY for NATURE LOVERS - Travel Vlog #Day 129
The Cinque Terre is a National Park made up of 5 different coastal villages - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. We stayed in La Spezia (much cheaper!) at an amazing hotel (watch the video in our Italy playlist!) and got a 7 minute train ride to the first village, Riomaggiore.
DAY 129 // November 7, 2017 // Cinque Terre, Italy
There are day train passes available which would be great if you are returning to the same location. We also see Vernazza & Monterosso and then go onto Genoa.
Oh, and I know I totally butcher most names in this video! haha!
You can also walk between all 5 villages (if the weather conditions allow it). It would be like a 5 hour walk -someday we would LOVE to go back. This was one of our FAVORITE places so far on this 1 year trip!

Cinque Terre Tour (Italy) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Cinque Terre Tour in Italy
Extending south to Tuscany, Italy’s mountainous western coast on the Gulf of Genoa is Liguria, a splendid area with paradisiacal cliffs, remote villages, bucket loads of sunshine and a region known as, Cinque Terre, that comprises five villages. Monterosso Al Mare is the first and largest of the five villages that comprise Cinque Terre, on the route south. It extends across two bays and two districts, separated by a rock. The modern district of Fegina has a long waterfront promenade, a well-kept sandy beach and a good range of accommodation. Vernazza is considered to be the most beautiful of the five villages mainly because of its location within a splendid bay. Corniglia has no direct access to the sea, but extends along a massive rocky plateau about a hundred metres above the sea. On the hilly outskirts is the San Pietro Church, built in 1334, with an elegant, decorated facade and a rose window of Carrara marble. The beauty of Manarola is not obvious at first glance. From the station, a narrow street leads down towards the village. Fishermen continue to earn their living here, and there are holiday apartments as well as several souvenir shops that satisfy the demands of the many tourists who visit. In Riomaggiore, a mighty ledge separates the station from the village and watchtowers still bear witness to its chequered past. According to legend, it was founded in the eigth century by Greeks who escaped to Italy from persecution by Byzantine Emperor, Leo The Third. Travelling by train from village to village is a relaxing way in which to enjoy the sights and provides exceptional views from the cliffs to the sea and villages. In just a few minutes it is possible to visit these colourful coastal villages that were formerly difficult to access from the outside world.

Visit Italy! Best Places Travel Tips: Monteriggioni (Tuscany)
Visit Italy! In this video about travel tips Luca & Marina will show you the beautiful medieval town of Monteriggioni, Tuscany. Only a short drive from Florence or Siena, this town will amaze you if you get a chance to visit it.
Monteriggioni is a comune in the province of Siena in the Italian region Tuscany. It borders on the communes of Casole d'Elsa, Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Poggibonsi, Siena and Sovicille.[2] The town is architecturally and culturally significant; it hosts several piazzas, and is referenced in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, as well as a playable locale in Ubisoft's video game installments Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town, located on a natural hillock, built by the Sienese in 1214–19 as a front line in their wars against Florence,[3] by assuming command of the Via Cassia running through the Val d'Elsa and Val Staggia to the west.
During the conflicts between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, the city was strategically placed as a defensive fortification. It also withstood many attacks from both the Florentines and the forces of the Bishop of Volterra. In 1554 the Sienese were able to place control of the town's garrison to Giovannino Zeti, who had been exiled from Florence.
