Trip to Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary & Lunch at Ramada Hotel Lucknow Uttar Pradesh | luckyynow
I live in Lucknow for more than 15 years but never get chance to visit Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary which is around 45 km from Lucknow and around 50 km from Kanpur.
I along with my two other friends started from Lucknow at around 9:30 in morning. Near Amausi Airport as always truck congested the highway and it took us around 10-15 min to cross that junction and after that highway was comfortable and easy. Next major stop was near toll which come after driving around 1 hr/40 km of driving. We planned our breakfast in Shri Anant Bhog a dhaba which was few km from Toll. We have take chola bhatura and samosa chola for breakfast. Our stop was short but a necessary one.2 km from Shri Anant Bhog we reach the main entrance of Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary. We reached Bird Sanctuary at around 11 AM.
The season starts from November to February. As they said that bird migration start from November and birds migrate from himalayan region and siberia during winters. Some reptiles found on regular basis. Apart from birds and reptiles they have established a deer park inside the sanctuary and have become one of the main attractions for kids. Its all about animals there.
Now you can roam around this several acres of land and beautiful lake.
Some facts
Always visit this place during peak season as rest of the time its all deserted.
They have snack bar and a restaurant which only opens during peak season.
Do take your binoculars or zoom lens if you want to enjoy bird watching.
Staying overnight is not possible every-time as they have limited rooms for public.
Tickets are very cheap .
We were there for approximately 3-4 hours and return journey started at around 3:30 PM, and while returning we have taken our lunch at Ramada Hotel.

Was told that it houses more than 1000 species of migratory bird in the winter months but I couldn't find any. This one hour drive from Lucknow.

A motley group of bird lovers and common men gathered at the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary on Saturday (April 25) morning for a nature trail, looking for birds, reptiles and flora and fauna. Visited Nawab GANJ Bird sanctuary in nov along with friends. The walking/ cycling track is new and well maintained. The watch tower offers good view for bird watching.The water bodies have lots of weed. Birds come in dec mid. It is nice place to spend winter day.

Lucknow | Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary , renamed in 2015 Shahid Chandra Shekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary, is a bird sanctuary located in Unnao district on the Kanpur-Lucknow highway in Uttar Pradesh India , is engulfed by dense forests and is home to over 250 species of aviary creatures, which include domestic Indian birds as well as the birds that migrate to the sanctuary in the winter months such as greylag goose, pintail, cotton teal, red-crested pochard, gadwall, shoveller, coot and mallard.
In addition to birds the sanctuary is also an abode for reptiles like Viper, Water Snakes, Cobra, Rattlesnakes and others, it also has a deer park in the main premises. It’s the perfect destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Shahid Chandra Shekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary is a great destination for gatherings and small picnics, it should definitely be on your itinerary for its manicured lawns, rich diversity of birds and animals and photogenic backdrops.
The sanctuary can be visited around the year; however, you should visit the bird sanctuary during the months of October to March as the club receives a huge populous of several species of birds who migrate from colder regions and settle at the bird sanctuary.

This underrated yet peaceful and lush green place is a haven for all birders and nature enthusiasts. Situated only 55 km from tge Capital city of Lucknow, this place hosts a number of migratory birds during winter season. A bit undeveloped, yet the place boasts of 3 excellent guest houses to stay in. Overall a nice place to take a break from the hectic life of city.

Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, renamed in 2015 Shahid Chandra Shekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary,[1] is a bird sanctuary located in Unnao district on the Kanpur-Lucknow highway in Uttar Pradesh, India consisting of a lake and the surrounding environment. It is one of the many wetlands of Northern India. The sanctuary provides protection for 250 species of migratory birds mostly from CIS[clarification needed] (or formerly USSR) countries, but the numbers have been dwindling since the 1990s, most having relocated to newer areas in Himachal and Rajasthan. The sanctuary also houses a deer park, watchtowers and boats.
Birds
The avian population here comprises a mix of residents as well as migratory birds. The birds migrate across Himalayas from Tibet, China, Europe and Siberia during winters. Some of these birds fly over 5000 km and above 8500 meters high to reach here. Some of the major migratory birds during the season are greylag goose, pintail, cotton teal, red-crested pochard, gadwall, shoveller, coot and mallard. Some major local migratory and residential birds are sarus crane, painted stork, peafowl, white ibis, dabchick, whistling teal, open-bill stork, white-necked stork, pheasant-tailed jacana, bronze winged jacana, purple moorhen, lapwing, tern, vulture, pigeon, king crow, Indian roller and bee-eater.
Reptiles
The major reptiles found in the sanctuary are cobra, viper, krait, ratsnake and water snakes.
Deer park
A small park for deer has been established in the vicinity of the sanctuary. There are spotted and barking deers in the park. It is one of the main attractions in the sanctuary.
Hospitality
A guesthouse with bedding and lodging is provided inside the sanctuary along with a restaurant and a children park.
