Temples of Siem Reap - Ta Prohm, Ta Som, Neak Pean, Preak Khan – 4K
Today is the last full day of our Vietnam, Cambodia adventure with “Great Rail Journeys”, but that did not mean a relaxing day by the pool. We were up early ready to visit more awe inspiring mystical palaces and temples around Siem Reap. The places we visit today exude a real air of mystery, half ruined with massive trees, not just growing around them, but becoming an integral part of them. It’s no wonder film makers have made good use of these awesome settings, no studio set could every replicate. They ooze with the mysteries and customs of long forgotten ancient cultures. The lake surrounding Preak Khan is Mother mature and man combining their talents to create beauty that has to be seen to be believed. The time finally comes to bid a fond farewell to Cambodia and Vietnam as we board our plane home, admiring London from above as we come in to land at Heathrow.

Neak Pean Temple | ប្រាសាទនាគព័ន្ធ | Siem Reap | Cambodia
Neak Pean Temple (Khmer: ប្រាសាទនាគព័ន្ធ) is a Buddhist temple in Jayatataka Baray, which was associated with Preah Khan temple, built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. It is the Mebon of the Preah Khan baray. One of the beautiful temple in Siem Reap, northern of the town about 10km. It was surrounded by water like an island.Neak Pean was originally designed for medical purposes (the ancients believed that going into these pools would balance the elements in the bather, thus curing disease); it is one of the many hospitals that Jayavarman VII built. It is based on the ancient Hindu belief of balance. Four connected pools represent Water, Earth, Fire and Wind. Each is connected to the central water source, the main tank, by a stone conduit presided over by one of Four Great Animals namely Elephant, Bull, Horse, and Lion, corresponding to the north, east, south, and west quarters. The stone conduits in the little pavilions are fashioned to represent the heads of the Four Great Animals. The only exception being that on the east, which represents a human head instead of a bull's. Originally, four sculptures stood on the floor of the lake. The only remaining statue is that of the horse, a form of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, saving sailors from the ogresses of Tamradvipa. The temple on the lake was originally dedicated to Avalokitesvara. Willetts believed that this is Jayavarman as he would have wished to have appeared to his people. Along the way there you will see Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Preah Khan Temple. And you will enjoy the views during your trip to there!

Neak Pean and Preah Khan, Siem Reap, Cambodia / Kambodża
Neak Pean (or Neak Poan) (Khmer: ប្រាសាទនាគព័ន្ធ) (The entwined serpents) at Angkor, Cambodia is an artificial island with a Buddhist temple on a circular island in Preah Khan Baray.( )
Preah Khan (Khmer: ប្រាសាទព្រះខ័ន), sometimes transliterated as Prah Khan, is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII. It is located northeast of Angkor Thom and just west of the Jayatataka baray, with which it was associated. It was the centre of a substantial organisation, with almost 100,000 officials and servants. The temple is flat in design, with a basic plan of successive rectangular galleries around a Buddhist sanctuary complicated by Hindu satellite temples and numerous later additions. Like the nearby Ta Prohm, Preah Khan has been left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins.( )

Neak Pean (The entwined serpents) at Angkor, Cambodia is an artificial island with a Buddhist temple on a circular island in Jayatataka Baray, which was associated with Preah Khan temple, built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. It is the Mebon of the Preah Khan baray (the Jayatataka of the inscription).
A small island temple located in the middle of the last baray (the Preah Khan Baray or Jayatataka) to be constructed by a Khmer king in the Angkor area. The central temple sits at the axis of a cross or lotus pattern of eight pools. Originally known as Rajasri, Neak Pean took its modern appellation, which means ‘coiled serpents,’ from the encoiled nagas that encircled the temple.
The temple is faced by a statue of the horse, Balaha, saving drowning sailors. Though originally dedicated to Buddha, Neak Pean contains several Hindu images.
Neak Pean may have served an absolution function, and the waters were thought to have healing properties. During the dry season when the water is low, check out the animal and human headwater spouts at the outside center of each pool. Neak Pean is most photogenic in the wet season when the pools are full.

,NEAK PEAN - The coiled serpents
Neak Pean is one of the temples that make one dream of the olden days of luxury and beauty. It was worth while to the overpowering temples of Siva that men and armies repaired; but it was at the tiny temple of Neak Pean that eager princesses laid their lovely offerings of wrought gold and pungent perfumes.
Prasat Neak Pean is located in the east of Prah Khan, 300 meters (984 feet) from the road.
