Join us on a road trip through the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway.
For 37 miles the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway winds through the southern end of the Wasatch Range, between Nephi and Payson Utah, rising to a high point of 9,345 feet and affording excellent views of the steep, wooded surroundings, dominated by 11,929 foot Mount Nebo, the tallest summit in the range.
Mount Nebo is the southernmost and highest mountain in the Wasatch Range of Utah, in the United States. Named after the biblical Mount Nebo overlooking Israel, which is said to be the place of Moses' death, it is the centerpiece of the Mount Nebo Wilderness, inside the Uinta National Forest.

Mount Nebo Scenic Byway - Fall Colors / Grotto Falls / Devils Kitchen
The Mount Nebo Scenic Loop has always been famous for its beautiful scenery and fall colors. There are two ways to access this loop, one is from Payson, Utah and the other is up Nephi Canyon. The road travels through the Uinta National Forest offering thick groves of Pine and Aspens. Entering from the Payson side, approximately 11 miles up the canyon you will come to Payson Lakes. This is a great place to have a picnic and view the fall colors around the three different lakes. Continuing from Payson Lakes approximately 16.7 miles up the canyon you will come to Devils Kitchen the Bryce Canyon of the Uinta National Forest.
Driving Directions
Take I-15 to Payson. When you exit the freeway this will put you on main street. Head up main until you reach 100 North. Turn left on 100 North. Stay on 100 North until you reach 600 East. 600 East will take you to the mouth of Payson Canyon. Or you can access via UT 132 up Nephi Canyon. Watch for the Signs.

The first part of this video shows what was open on the southern portion of Mt Nebo Scenic Loop on May 31st, 2019. One week later we drove through Payson Canyon to where the gate was closed to motorized traffic and explored beyond the gate with our bikes eventually enjoying a picnic at about 8600' before enjoying a 2000' paved descent. The United States Congress designated the Mount Nebo Wilderness in 1984 and it now has a total of 27,075 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Utah and is managed by the Forest Service.
The centerpiece of the southern portion of this Wilderness, Mount Nebo rises to a majestic 11,928 feet the highest point in the entire Wasatch Range. The peak looms above a swatch of mountain scenery located between Interstate 15 and the Nebo Scenic Loop Byway. Wilderness elevation starts at 5,400 feet and climbs through mountain valleys and meadows broken by moderate to steep ridges. The climb will take you through great biological diversity, beginning with a sagebrush-cliffrose association, to mountain brush (oakbrush and mahogany), aspen, and white fir, then spruce and alpine fir, until you reach the timberline and an alpine zone with primrose, alpine moss, and tundra plants. Bobcats, mule deer, and elk are commonly seen here; black bears and mountain lions are more elusive. Numerous streams are rich with rainbow trout. Wildflowers abound in late spring and summer. Devil's Kitchen Geologic Site, adjacent to the eastern Wilderness boundary, will remind you of a miniature (but not as grand) Bryce Canyon. There are 4 Forest Service maintained trails, totaling approximately 21 miles in the Mount Nebo Wilderness. There are several other trails that border the Wilderness and allow access as well.

Finally feeling like we have the groove we leave the Spiral Jetty and head south through Salt Lake City where we find the Nebo loop, a scenic byway outside of Nephi, Utah and the Cottonwood campground that offers 16 days of dispersed camping. When the cold sets in we make our way to Torrey Utah on the outskirts of Capitol Reef National Park where the red rock adventure begins.

Payson Lakes Guard Station on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest
Payson Lakes Guard Station is located approximately 13 miles from Payson, Utah, along the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway. The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest offers the cabin for advance reservation on recreation.gov so visitors can enjoy an experience similar to that of early Forest Rangers and their families. The Guard Station is nestled in a forest of aspen and Douglas fir trees at an elevation of 8,000 feet. The Guard Station complex can sleep a maximum 8 people in bunk beds; four people inside the cabin and four people in the bunkhouse. Up to 7 additional day use only guests may visit. Parking space is limited to 5 family vehicles. No vehicles are permitted off the pavement. An adjacent pasture is included which can accommodate 8 horses. There is a 2-night minimum stay and a maximum 7-day stay limit. Pets are not allowed. Guests should bring their own bedding, plates and utensils. Additional fees apply to the Payson Lakes Recreation Area The Guard Station was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 as part of the New Deal Program.
The Payson Lakes area includes McClellan, Box and Big East Lakes. Summer wildflowers are abundant. A variety of wildlife makes its home around the lakes. The nearby Payson Lakes Recreation Area offers great canoeing and kayaking. Anglers enjoy fishing for rainbow and brown trout. There are many nearby trails for hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use. A popular day-use area is located on the shore of Big East Lake, with a small swim beach, picnic tables and flush toilets. A paved nature path begins at the parking area and circles the lake. The Mount Nebo Wilderness Area is adjacent, brimming with beautiful mountain scenery, pristine waters, abundant wildlife, vibrant summer wildflowers and numerous trail opportunities.
The Nebo Loop Scenic Byway stretches 37 miles through high alpine terrain, dense forests and colorful meadows. Devil's Kitchen Geological Area can be found along the loop. It offers a 1/2-mile round-trip trail to interesting red rock hoodoos.

Devils Kitchen Trail on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah
The Devils Kitchen Trail is located on the Spanish Fork Ranger District of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah. A short hike along a paved, level trail leads to a small platform overlooking a rock formation that has been described as a mini Bryce Canyon (GPS position N. 39.803583 W. 111.688472). There is a small picnic area and a vault toilet bathroom at the trailhead. This is an accessible trail. From the north, the trailhead is located 28 miles south of Payson City on the Mount Nebo National Scenic Byway (Nebo Loop). From the south, the trailhead is located 15 miles from Nephi City, 10 miles north of the junction of State Highway 132 and the Nebo Loop. Nebo Loop Payson Lakes ride down canyon 11-02-2013
Taking a last ride up Nebo loop from the Payson side on November 2nd 2013 (the next day we got lots of snow so I don't know if I'll be able to even make it back up there again this year).
The video starts after I have turned around and started back down the canyon from right as I go by the turn-off to Payson Lakes campground. Headed north. Ends near the bottom/mouth of he canyon at the day picnic area.

This is part of the famous Nebo Loop scenic byway in central-ish Utah about an hour south of Salt Lake City.

That loop is always a fun ride over the top. Go from about 4500 feet in Payson, UT to almost 9500 feet by Mt Nebo (and a beautiful vista), and then back down to about the same in Nephi, UT

Beautiful day for a ride with a low breeze and mid 70 at the 9000 foot elevation. The colors were beautiful and the Quaking Aspens have changed their colors, finally. Two weeks prior they were still green.
There were 5 of us women on our Harley's that day, sharing the fall colors up in the beautiful Utah mountains. We started from the south entrance after having meal at Lisa's Country Kitchen in Nephi. I have to say that I prefer this route better than the north to south route. Maybe it was the time of day, sun wasn't giving me too much glare this time.
Hope you like it, at least the colors and the scenic views. I've yet to get music attached to my videos so you don't hear the rumble of my pipes too much and a little rattle from my ReplayXD 1080.

Hiking the grotto trail in Payson, Utah
This is a short, fun hike for all ages, especially for those with small children. If taking a drive along the scenic Nebo Loop Road that goes from Payson, UT to Nephi, UT, be sure to spend 30 minutes and visit The Grotto.
The Grotto Hike Details:
Distance – 0.6 miles roundtrip
Approximate hiking time – 30 minutes to one hour
Elevation at trailhead – 6330 feet
Elevation at The Grotto – 6489 feet
Elevation gain during hike – less than 200 feet
Difficulty – Easy
Trail – Dirt
Amount of water recommended – 1 liter
Bathrooms – None
Seasons to hike – April to early November (Depends on how soon they open the Nebo Loop Road after Winter)
Permits: None needed
How to get there:
To reach the Grotto Trail from the north, get off I-15 at Payson, Exit 254, turn left onto Payson Main Street (State Route 77). Continue south until Main Street meets 100 North. Turn left and travel east to 600 East, then turn right, and follow this road south to the entrance to Payson Canyon and the beginning of the Nebo Scenic Loop. The trailhead is about 7 miles up the road on the left. There is a parking area on the right side of the road.
To reach the trailhead from the south, I would recommend using the route above, but if you’d like to drive most of the Nebo Loop from Nephi to The Grotto, follow these directions. Get off I-15 at Exit 225 in Nephi. Once on the off-ramp, turn left and go under I-15. This is 100 N/UT-132. Stay on UT-132 for almost five miles. As the road gently curves to the right, you’ll see a road coming from the left, and a sign the says Nebo Loop. Get in the turn lane and turn left. From here, travel northeast on Salt Creek Canyon Road for 3.3 miles, and the main road will curve to the right, while another road comes in on the left. Stay on the main road, as this road is now the Nebo Scenic Loop Road. Stay on this road for 26.0 miles, and you’ll see The Grotto parking on the left, and the trailhead is just on the other side of the road.
Hitting the Trail:
It’s not very often that the directions on how to get to the trailhead in your car, takes up more space than telling you what to expect on the trail. However, this is one of those hikes. It’s very straight forward. As you cross the road from the parking area to The Grotto trailhead, you’ll see a log fence, and that’s where you go. The trail is very well-marked and frequently used. On a few occasions, like during a weekday, I’ll have it all to myself, but on the weekends, there are always families with young children on the trail.
In recent years, they’ve made improvements to the trail by building steps and wide, flat logs to cross the shallow stream the flows from the Grotto. It’s a pleasant hike and is shaded nearly the entire way. As you approach the Grotto, you’ll see a spur trail that climbs to the left and goes up above the small waterfall. This is a great place to take pictures of The Grotto. The picture above was taken at that spot. As mentioned, during the weekends, this is a very popular hike, so remember to be considerate to other hikers. The flow of the waterfall varies during the year from a small trickle to a very powerful flow, depending on the amount of precipitation during the previous winter. The entire hike will normally take no longer than an hour, even with little children.
The water flow varies at the Grotto depending on the season.
