8 Forts @ Danube in Serbia - Kalemegdan Fortress.
About 115 battles, have been fought over imposing, impressive Belgrade Kalemegdan Fortress. The citadel was destroyed more than 40 times throughout the centuries.
It was build in the 1st century as a palisade with earth walls around her, and developed over the years into the Roman stronghold in 2nd century, than into the Byzantine kastel in 6th and 7th century. After that, becomes medieval Capital of Serbia in 13th and 15th century, and finally an Austrian and Ottoman artillery fortification in 17th and 18th century. The Fortress makes a unique cultural and historical complex within Kalemegdan park.
Many mysteries, legends and facts are written in the walls of this remarkable place, and some of the biggest are definitely about Nebojsa tower and Roman well.
Nebojsa tower is the only surviving mediaeval tower of the Belgrade Fortress. The name, Nebojsa, means fearless in Serbian. Tower was built in the early 15th century, during the reign of despot Stefan Lazarevic. It was billed as a part of the defense system which was protecting Belgrade from the Ottoman invasion after the Siege of Belgrade in 1456.
The well was built in the period from 1717 to 1731, during the Austrian Baroque reconstruction of the fortress. This building is designated and called “The Large Well”. Name “Roman well” was first recorded in the nineteenth century, and was based on folk tales about all old buildings, whose origins are forgotten, often were attributed to the Romans.
Also, at Kalemegdan Fortress you will find Military museum. This museum is the most accurate witness of changes in history at this part of Balkans and wider. The museum has over 3,000 ancient and modern items which include everything from Roman swords and helmets to items of modern war history.
There are also two churches inside the fortress – Ruzica Church, and the Chapel of Sveta Petka which you can visit, just make sure you are dressed appropriately to enter the churches.
In the upper part of Kalelegdan Fortress you will find a symbol of our capital – the Victor monument. Bronze, male figure of 14 meters, stands and looks across the river. Statue was made in 1913. by our famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
Whether you just want to take a leisurely walk, go for jog, sit on a park bench and watch people go by, lay under a tree and read a book, just take in the fresh air, and enjoy in park land Kalemegdan. It is visited by thousands of tourists every year, and is open all day and night all year round.

World War I - Belgrade defenders - See Belgrade inside
Hello, this is SEE BELGRADE INSIDE, story about MAJOR GAVRILOVIC speech. Major Gavrilovic was an officer in Serbian army in first world war.
Why Major Gavrilovic speech? Because we are very emotional when we speak about first world war, we lost major part of male population during this war. And because it is very inspiring speech, grate example of human sacrifice for bigger cause. Not only and not because it is a military speech, on contrary. Story about Major Gavrilovic speech is important part of Belgrade’s history.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 Major Gavrilovic was a commander of second battalion of tenth regiment in Serbian army.
After the victory battles on the beginning of the war, Serbian army was forced on disengagement. He ordered this glorious command to his solders in year 1915. on October 7, Below Kalemegdan fortress, on the eve of battle with 59. Regiment of Austro-Hungarian Empire.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 I am not able to make quality translation and present glorious Major Gavrilovic speech in adequate words, but I will do it anyway, I want to to evoke your imagination and interest.
So try to imagine this impossible position where you are fighting against much stronger and better equipped enemy and you know that you cannot win, feel Major Gavrilovic words:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 Solders, exactly in 15. hours enemy must be destroyed with your furious attack, with your bombs and bayonets. The face of Belgrade, our capitol, must be glorious! Solders, heroes, supreme command erased our regiment from the list, our regiment is sacrificed for the honor of our country and Belgrade. You do not have to worry for your lives any more, they do not exist. Forward, in to glory! For the king and the country! Long live the king, long live Belgrade!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 The battle took place in today well-known touristic part of the city, between Kalemegdan fortress and confluence of Sava and Danube, around Nebojša tower and in Karađorđeva street.
Most of Major Gavrilovic soldiers were killed, he was badly wounded.
Of course, Major Garvilovic speech is a metaphor, nobody was actually erased from the list, in Serbian army it is one of the greatest military speech.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6 Monument dedicated to Belgrade’s defenders is located on the Danube’s riverside before sports center Milan Gale Muskatirovic Autor is our Sculptor Kolja Milunovic, and it was made in 1988. On one side you can see Serbian soldiers and on the other glorious Major Gavrilovic words.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7 On the intersection of Mike Alasa and Cara Urosa streets, where battle also took place, on the buildings wall you can see memorial also dedicated to Belgrade’s defenders. Again, Major Gavrilovic words are here.
Belgrade is awarded with LEGION OF HONOUR in 1920. by French marshal Franchet d' Esperey.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8 Today city parts where this battle took place are beautiful, river banks, confluence of two rivers, very pleasant place, peaceful, place to enjoy in river. In early summer, on the part of walkway after sports center Milan Gale Muskatirovic there are long rose garden all away to end of the walk. Roses are colorful, and SMELL fantastic. It feels good to look at mighty Danube and smell those beautiful roses.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9 Story about Belgrade’s defenders is still actual and alive, Swedish heavy metal band Sabaton have a song Last Dying Breath, it speaks about Serbian soldiers. In the last part of the song you can hear glorious speech.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10 When you visit Belgrade next time, or first time, and you walk on new Sava’s corso, Danubes beautiful bank or Karađorđeva street, try to recall Major Gavrilovic words.
I am Nedeljko, I was born in Belgrade, I live in Belgrade, I love Belgrade. Till next story in SEE BELGRADE INSIDE goodbye!
Belgrade In Your Pocket - Belgrade Fortress
Belgrade Fortress & Kalemegdan Park
Located on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Sava river into the Danube. The Romans were the first to build a fort (castrum) at this site and in the late 1st century AD, it became HQ of the IV Flavian Legion. Over the centuries of sieges, battles and conquests, the fortress was repeatedly razed to the ground, rebuilt and restructured. It took on its present shape round the end of the 18th century, but again, the wars that followed swept away nearly all the buildings. The Belgrade Fortress consists of Upper Town, Lower Town and Kalemegdan Park. Kalemegdan Park was created as late as the 19th century, on a plateau in front of the fortress, which had been cleared for centuries to allow for unobstructed view of the advancing enemy. The park is popular because of its many shady benches, random sculptures, art pavilion, Zoo, amusement park, souvenir vendors. It is the favourite haunt of chess players, squirrels and couples in love.
The most of the preserved fortress ramparts and gates are located in the Upper town, as well as the Military Museum, St. Petka and Ružica churches, Roman Well (an intriguing building whose eerie waters claimed many lives) and the symbol of Belgrade - Pobednik (The Victor). The plateau with the statue of Pobednik offers stunning views over the rivers and incredible sunsets. The Lower Town at the banks of the Danube was the main city centre in the Middle Ages. It was surrounded by walls and had a port. Only a few buildings remain today: Kula Nebojša (Daredevil Tower) from 1460, Turkish Bath from the 18th century (today housing a planetarium), Gate of Carl VI from 1736.

Tower of Despot Stefan Lazarevic - Кула Деспота Стефана Лазаревића - Калемегдан
The Byzantine rule was followed by a period when the fort was replaced by the Hungarians and Serbs until the Battle of Angora in 1402. After this significant battle, Serbian despot Stefan Lazarevic, son of Prince Lazar Hrebeljanovic, receives the title of despot from the Byzantine emperor. Shortly after receiving the title of despot, Stefan entered into vassal relations with the Hungarian King Sigmund and gained Belgrade control. Despot Stefan Lazarevic, one of the most educated people of his day, made Belgrade the capital of Serbian land. As Serbia's military, cultural and economic headquarters, Belgrade's fortress required reconstruction. Despot Stefan immediately began to rebuild, but also devoted himself to the construction of new ramparts and towers. The despot divided the city into two units, the Upper and Lower Towns, and in the Upper Town built a castle within which housed the palace, the library and the two towers of Nebojsa and Bojs. The upper city was perilous with a double rampart system, and another level of protection was the chance. After the death of the despot Stefan Lazarevic, the city was returned to the Hungarians.

Kalemegdanska tvrdjava - spomenik Pobednik, ušće Save u Dunav, Barutana, kula Nebojša...
Mnoge priče, događaji i misterije krase Kalemegdan.
