A touching story of #ADogOfFlanders #nelloandpatrache #ataleoffriendship #Antwerp #Belgium
One of the cartoons I grew up with was A Dog of Flanders, a story of friendship between a poor orphan Nello and his dog named Patrasche. Ironically, the animé, which was based on Marie Louise de la Ramee's 1872 novel, was a hit worldwide except in Antwerp, the setting of the story NOBODY KNOWS IT IN BELGIUM. Now, The local tourism government finally realized its market potential.
A Dog of Flanders is an 1872 novel by English author Marie Louise de la Ramée published with her pseudonym Ouida. It is about a Flemish boy named Nello and his dog, Patrasche and is set in Antwerp. In 19th century Belgium, a boy named Nello becomes an orphan at the age of two when his mother dies in the Ardennes. His grandfather Jehann Daas, who lives in a small village near the city of Antwerp, takes him in.One day, Nello and Jehann Daas find a dog who was almost beaten to death, and name him Patrasche. Due to the good care of Jehann Daas, the dog recovers, and from then on, Nello and Patrasche are inseparable. Since they are very poor, Nello has to help his grandfather by selling milk. Patrasche helps Nello pull their cart into town each morning. Nello falls in love with Aloise, the daughter of Nicholas Cogez, a well-off man in the village, but Nicholas doesn't want his daughter to have a poor sweetheart. Although Nello is illiterate, he is very talented in drawing. He enters a junior drawing contest in Antwerp, hoping to win the first prize, 200 francs per year. However, the jury selects somebody else.
Afterwards, he is accused of causing a fire by Nicholas (the fire occurred on his property) and his grandfather dies. His life becomes even more desperate. Having no place to stay, Nello wishes to go to the cathedral of Antwerp (to see Rubens' The Elevation of the Cross and The Descent of the Cross), but the exhibition held inside the building is only for paying customers and he's out of money. On the night of Christmas Eve, he and Patrasche go to Antwerp and, by chance, find the door to the church open. The next morning, the boy and his dog are found frozen to death in front of the triptych.
In Japan and Korea the novel has been a children's classic for decades and was adapted into several Japanese films and anime. Since the 1980s, the Belgian board of tourism caught on to the phenomenon and built two monuments honoring the story to please East-Asian tourists. There is a small statue of Nello and Patrasche at the Kapelstraat in the Antwerp suburb of Hoboken, and a commemorative plaque in front of the Antwerp Cathedral donated by Toyota, that was later replaced by a marble statue of the two characters covered by a cobblestone blanket, created by the artist Batist Vermeulen.
There are three monuments built to commemorate the story. The first one was built in 1985 and can be seen in the Kapelstraat in Hoboken, Antwerp. Up until the end of 2016 a fictional grave stone stood near the Antwerp Cathedral. It had text in English and Japanese that read: Nello, and his dog Patrasche, main characters from the story A Dog of Flanders, symbols of true and sternful friendship, loyalty and devotion.
On December 10, 2016, a new monument was revealed on the Handschoenmarkt square in front of the Antwerp Cathedral. A sculpture in white marble represents Nello and Patrasche sleeping, covered by a blanket of cobble stones.
Popularity
The novel shares a reasonable notability in the United Kingdom and the United States of America and is extremely popular in South Korea, Japan and the Philippines, to the point where it is seen as a children's classic. It inspired film and anime adaptations, including the 1975 animated TV series Dog of Flanders which reached an audience of 30 million viewers on its first broadcast. In Belgium the story is more obscure. Only in 1987 did it receive a Dutch translation; this happened after the tale was adapted into a story of the popular comic book series Suske en Wiske. Since then, monuments were raised to commemorate Nello and Patrasche to please tourists. In 2007 Didier Volckaert and An van Dienderen directed a documentary about the international popularity of the story: Patrasch, A Dog of Flanders - Made in Japan. It researches all available film adaptations of the story and interviews several British, American and Japanese people about what attracts them to this novel.

The Dog of Flanders (1997) English Dub
Set in 19th-century Belgium, this classic tale, based on the Flemish novel by Oui'da, celebrates the affectionate bond between an innocent boy and his faithful dog. The stunning animation, a masterful combination of traditional and computer-aided animation, captures the natural splendor of the Flanders countryside and recreates the spirit of this classic story that has captivated audiences world wide for more than 130 years. In fact, the popularity of The Dog Of Flanders led the local Belgian government of Flanders to dedicate a statue to Nello and Patrash in 1985, immortalizing their devotion to each other.

Hey guys, Here's a recap of our video visit in Antwerp, Belgium aside from SuperNova that we've been visited did you know that Antwerp is the Diamond Capital of the World, The City of Fashion, The City of Rubens, The City of Main Port Antwerpen and why did they called it Antwerp? Well simply because of the Hand.
And the Cathedral of Our Lady where the Story of Patrasche and Nello set a #ADogOfFlanders
According to folklore, notably celebrated by a statue in front of the town hall, the city got its name from a legend about a giant called Antigoon who lived near the Scheldt river.
Druon Antigoon is a Flemish folkloric character. He was a mythical giant who lived in Antwerp.
He extracted a toll from passing boatmen, and for those who refused, he severed one of their hands and threw it into the river. Eventually the giant was killed by a young hero named Silvius Brabo, who cut off the giant's own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen, from Dutch hand werpen, akin to Old English hand and wearpan (to throw), which has evolved to today's warp.
Statue of Brabo and the giant's hand
Silvius Brabo was a mythical Roman soldier who was said to have killed a giant, and by this would have created the name Brabant.
The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe
A port in northern Belgium, on the Scheldt River; population 472,071 (2008). By the 16th century, it was a leading European commercial and financial center. Flemish name Antwerpen.
One of the most beautiful railway station in Europe
Antwerpen-Centraal is the name of the main train station in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The station is operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS).
Fashion
Antwerp is a rising fashion city, and has produced designers such as the Antwerp Six. The city has a cult status in the fashion world, due to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, one of the most important fashion academies in the world. It has served as the learning centre for many Belgian fashion designers.
Antwerp was the first city to host the World Gymnastics Championships, in 1903. During World War I, the city became the fallback point of the Belgian Army after the defeat at Liège.
Culture
Antwerp had an artistic reputation in the 17th century, based on its school of painting, which included Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, the two Teniers and many others.
The Grote Markt of Antwerp is a town square situated in the heart of the old city quarter. It is filled with an extravagant city hall, numerous elaborate 16th century guildhalls, many restaurants and cafés. Lying within walking distance of the Scheldt river, it hosts a Christmas market and ice rink in Winter.

Sunday Market's Comb
I've been using a copper comb from January 1975. I bought it on Sunday market in Antwerp, Belgium. I think it will last for more than 100 years. I've been using it all the time, and I've thought it's the best. It is especially good for combing as it does not generate static electricity.
It took a long time despite being the shortest route to Europe. After one night in Hong Kong and a plane change, I went to Paris via Saigon, Calcutta, Delhi, Te Haran, and then through the Mediterranean and the Alps. There weren't many passengers at that time, so there were no direct flights like present.
There was a Sunday market near the hotel where I was staying. Since it was famous, people came from even neighboring countries. So there were food stuffs and various products and crowded with various people. I bought the copper comb there.
When I was in elementary school I enjoyed reading A Dog of Flanders. Are you familiar with the story of the poor boy painter Nello, the faithful dog Patrasche, the fine rich daughter Alua, and the famous Rubens paintings? When I was in Antwerp, I wanted to find the ointment of this fairy tale, so I went to the cathedral and asked people around me, but it didn't work. The images of Nello and Patrasche in the video were later created under the influence of Japanese animation (Korea?).
At that time, Belgium was a better place to live and safer than it is now. It was very comfortable because there was no curfew. So after 12 o'clock, I walked alone in the street, but there was no danger because the society was stable. After about two months, we wanted to eat kimchi too much. At that time, there were very few Korean restaurants known in Europe, and only one place sold Korean food. We went to the market and bought things like cabbage and green peppers to make strange kimchi, but we still felt like eating kimchi.
Antwerp is a port city, and when I first saw it, I was surprised at its size. As I served as a platoon captain on Yeongdo Island during military service, I knew the port of Pusan, but the port of Pusan was not comparable.
I went to Waterloo with the guidance of a BTM staff. The picture taken next to the lion is three of us, two Indians and a BTM staff. The lion's hill and the memorial are visible, and the hilly hills from the lion's statue are the battlefields of Waterloo Battle. There are no mountainous mountains nearby, and there are no features available for tactics, as Wellington formed a major shield based on nearby farms. The souvenirs are mainly Napoleon, which is ironic in history as Napoleon is defeated and praised as a hero. You can check this again by visiting the Invalides in Paris. I've been following camping around. I thought I'd go to a great mountain because they prepared as if climbing. But when I arrived, I couldn't stop laughing. The hill was lower than the hill behind our home town.

A Dog of Flanders by OUIDA | Full Audiobook
Nello and Patrasche were left all alone in the world. So begins the poignant story of the two orphans who were to become inseparable companions. They were Nello, an orphaned youth, and Patrasche, the dog which he and his grandfather saved from near death one day. The tale takes place outside of Antwerp, and so popular has this story become that there is a commemorative statue of Nello and Patrasche standing in the village yet today. The story is powerful, and masterfully written by Marie Louise de la Ramée under the pseudonym Ouida. (Summary by Roger Melin)
