Netherlands Open Air Museum
Netherlands Open Air Museum
Arnhem, Netherlands
Founded in 1912, the Netherlands Open Air Museum is picturesquely situated in the rolling forested landscape near Arnhem. The museum commissioned Mecanoo to design not only an entrance pavilion but also an indoor exhibition space, thereby making visits to the open-air museum more suited to all weather conditions.
Besides experiencing the historic buildings, rural culture and traditional Dutch crafts for which the museum is renowned, visitors can now enjoy temporary exhibitions in the new building and watch shows at the HollandRama, a new rotating panorama theatre.

The Netherlands -- Arnhem
Located on a branch of the River Rhine just 25 miles from the German border, Arnhem is another side to Holland, a lively city surrounded by nature. The Netherlands Open-Air Museum introduced us to the history of the local people. We took a free white bike and cycled around De Hoge Veluwe, Holland's largest national park and stopped in at the Kröller-Müller Museum. A short local train ride took us to the Royal Paleis Het Loo with its magnificent baroque garden, and later we dined at the Castle Doorwerth near Wolfheze. All within easy reach of Arnhem. Case study: Developing the first mobile tour for the Dutch Open Air Museum in 1 week by a student
With this project we have introduced the mobile storytlling to the Dutch Open Air Museum.
We made an experiment to demonstrate the easiness of the first step in this long road:
Julia Kalimova studies the computer science at the Columbia University. She spent June 2019 in the Netherlands and made the first multilingual guided tour for the Dutch Open Air Museum.
The interview provides her reflection on this one-week project and can be used as a workshop for the museum's staff.

CHEESE FARM The Making - Zaanse Schans Amsterdam Netherlands [HD]
Zaanse Schans (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzaːnsə ˈsxɑns]) is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk in the Netherlands.
It has a collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses. From 1961 to 1974 old buildings from all over the Zaanstreek (nl) were relocated using lowboy trailers to the area.[1] The Zaans Museum, established in 1994, is located in the Zaanse Schans.
The Zaanse Schans is one of the popular tourist attractions of the Netherlands and an anchor point of ERIH, the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The neighbourhood attracted approximately 1.6 million visitors in 2014.

ZUIDERZEE MUSEUM ENKHUIZEN 2013
The Zuiderzeemuseum is a museum located on the Wierdijk in Enkhuizen, Netherlands devoted to preserving Enkhuizen's cultural heritage as well as the maritime history of the Zuiderzee, and since 1932, the IJsselmeer. Open year-round, it consists of an inside and an outside museum, though the outside museum is only open in the summer.

Typical scene at the Zuiderzee Museum.
Enkhuizen was an important shipping port for centuries until the Zuiderzee was enclosed by the afsluitdijk in 1932. According to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica:
Enkhuizen possesses a considerable fishing fleet and has some shipbuilding and rope-making, as well as market traffic.
—Encyclopædia Britannica article on Enkhuizen, 1911,
The inside museum, which is a string of 17th century buildings that once were VOC warehouses, contains temporary exhibition areas, as well as some permanent installations, most notably the ship's hall, which allows visitors a close-up view of some of the more common types of historical boats from Enkhuizen's rich fishing industry. The indoor museum also displays artifacts from other aspects of Enkhuizen's cultural past, including art and furniture.[2]
The outside museum was completed in 1983 and it recreates a village of small houses from all over the IJsselmeer region and represents the way people lived in the IJsselmeer in the 19th century and at the start of the 20th century.
The inside museum has a restaurant which itself is a National Heritage site, called the Peperhuis. It is available to rent for events, as well as having a separate entrance and opening hours.

SKANSEN | World’s Oldest Open-Air Museum | Stockholm | Sweden
Skansen (the Sconce) is the first open-air museum and zoo in Sweden and is located on the island Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden. It was opened on 11 October 1891 by Artur Hazelius (1833–1901) to show the way of life in the different parts of Sweden before the industrial era.
Skansen attracts more than 1.3 million visitors each year. The many exhibits over the 75 acre (300,000 m²) site include a full replica of an average 19th-century town, in which craftsmen in traditional dress such as tanners, shoemakers, silversmiths, bakers and glass-blowers demonstrate their skills in period surroundings. There is even a small patch growing tobacco used for the making of cigarettes. There is also an open-air zoo containing a wide range of Scandinavian animals including the bison, brown bear, moose, grey seal, lynx, otter, red fox, reindeer, wolf, and wolverine (as well as some non-Scandinavian animals because of their popularity). There are also farmsteads where rare breeds of farm animals can be seen.

Absorbing Dutch History Out in the Open
A tour guide is a teacher of culture, and in Europe, each country’s open-air folk museum provides the perfect classroom — a sprawling park filled with historic and traditional buildings from every corner of the country for visitors to stroll through and travel back in time as they pop into homes, farms, pharmacies, schoolhouses, medicinal herb gardens, and various mills. On our fast “best of” swing through Europe, a few hours at the Netherlands Open-Air Folk Museum in Arnhem gives us an unforgettable dose of the Dutch countryside from centuries past. Join me on this little video clip as I crash a grade-school party just as the kids are settling into their tasty cones of hot fries.
Thanks for following along here on YouTube as I guide our Best of Europe in 21 Days Tour (ricksteves.com/europe-tour). You can find all of my dispatches from the road at ricksteves.com/blog.

CoupleTraveller #1: Brugge, Belgium
Our 2nd visit to old town in East Flanders, Belgium. Although it was autumn already (constant temperature below 10°C), the sun shined (or shone?) and it was wonderful city. Loved every corner of it, met couple of circus dancers and they specially performed in front of us.
A biéntot, Brugge!
The last payed photographer in the Netherlands
Photography is all about reflecting on what you see beyond the frame. Martin's Wijdeman's work as a full-time photographer for the Dutch national heritage museum has been worldly published. During the last three decades he composed the image of the museum indirectly attracting millions of visitors to Arnhem through his photographs. We met occasionally on the grounds of the wide open air museum district. I always envied him with just his camera around the neck while I would be scrawling along with heavy gear on my back...Anyhow after 23 years of photography, Martin retired. I visited him in his studio as he was preparing the illustrations for the next year of 2012 museum guide. As he mentioned:
It feels like ruling on your own death, I won't be there to see it published..! In this digital era, Martin's job ends there. In that matter he was probably one of the last Dutch photographers on a pay-roll. Thanks Martin for your kind patience and for submitting on the other side of my SONY PMW-EX1R lens. Enjoy the sailing!
