Yosemite National Park - The Mist Trail - Vernal & Nevada Falls
On day 2 in Yosemite National Park we headed for the Mist Trail. In May the waterfalls are at their best with lots of snow melt cascading over Vernal and Nevada Falls. We walked up to the top from Curry Village and then back down via the John Muir Trail. On the way back to the truck we were treated to a Black Bear sighting, a perfect end to a fantastic day.

Mist Trail Hike in Yosemite National Park (4K)
Mist Trail Hike in Yosemite National Park (4K)
The Mist Trail in Yosemite is one of the most popular hikes in the entire park. The 3 miles round trip takes you up 1,000 feet of elevation as you climb up stairs to the top of Vernal Falls. You can continue on from here to Nevada Falls as well. It is a great but tough uphill hike in the park.

Yosemite Falls Trail - the SCARY part (2015)
Enjoy uncut GoPro Head Strap footage of the SCARY part of Yosemite Falls Trail, the six-minute descent to the Upper Fall Overlook (starts at 02:00). If you have acrophobia, this trail might not be for you. I overcame my fears four times now, I think that's enough. While there wasn't much water falling during another California drought, the grueling 2700' climb and descent was still every bit as spectacular. Along on this hike for the first time were my Danish cousins Mads and Tine, and Mads's daughter Anna. Wife Carol is the gal I'm following down to the overlook. A fun little hike up to Nevada Falls in Yosemite National Park. It is pretty strenuous at times but well worth the view. I filmed this with my GoPro Hero 3+ at 1080p and 60fps.

READ THE BLOG : Saying FU To Your Fears -
Oh. My. Gosh. Is all I have to say after hiking up to the top of Vernal Falls at Yosemite National Park. There were so many ways I could have talked myself out of that hike (which I share in the blog post about how to face your fears linked above) but I'm so glad I didn't. It was a magical experience that I worked incredibly hard for and will never forget.

Die Nevada Falls im Yosemite Nationalpark II
Nevada Fall is a 594-foot (181 m) high waterfall on the Merced River in Yosemite National Park, California. It is located below the granite dome, Liberty Cap, at the west end of Little Yosemite Valley. The waterfall is widely recognized by its bent shape, in which the water free-falls for roughly the first third of its length to a steep slick-rock slope. This mid-fall impact of the water on the cliff face creates a turbulent, whitewater appearance in the falls and produces a great deal of mist which covers a wide radius, which led to its current name (Nevada is an old Spanish word meaning snowy). Additionally, when viewed from the left-hand side, its angular shape is suggestive of the western border of the state of Nevada.
The Indian name was Yo-wy-we, signifying the twist or squirm of the falling water. Lafayette Bunnell suggested the name Nevada for the waterfall. He wrote, The Nevada Fall was so called because it was the nearest to the Sierra Nevada, and because the name was sufficiently indicative of a wintry companion for our spring (Vernal Fall)... The white, foaming water, as it dashed down Yo-wy-we from the snowy mountains, represented to my mind a vast avalanche of snow.[2]
The Emerald Pool forms on the step between Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall downstream. The 317-foot (97 m) high Vernal Fall is a short hike from the bottom of Nevada Fall. They form a cascade in which the Merced River flows down to Yosemite Valley.
This cascade is sometimes called the giant staircase, which is evident when viewed from above, at Glacier Point.
The hike to the top of Nevada Fall, along the Mist Trail, is 3 miles (4.8 km) from the trailhead in Yosemite Valley. One must first hike to Vernal Fall and then trek another 2 miles (3.2 km) to reach the top. The John Muir Trail, which starts near the trail to Happy Isles, goes to the top of Nevada Fall.
Yosemite • MOST DANGEROUS HIKE (one of America's top 10)the Mist Trail
Hiking the Mist Trail and its stairs... Lots and lots of stairs.
The Mist Trail is the most popular hiking trail in the Yosemite National Park, for reasons you can see in the video. It's amazing.
Vernal Fall Bridge is .8 miles from the Valley. The hike to the bridge is more of a walk, than a hike. The path is paved and well maintained. It's the easiest part of the trail.
To the top of Vernal Falls is another .7 miles, but is the toughest part of the trip. The incline is gradual, but quickly gets difficult (strenuous in hiking vernacular), to the point where you're climbing steep steps for about 300 feet. The few at the top is fantastic. There is a flat area where you can take a break, have some food, and chill out before you tackle the next half of the trip.
On a morbid note, but worth mentioning, is that people die at this point of the trail every year. Every year. Mostly it's from people swimming at the top (in the Spring and late Summer) getting caught in the currents, and getting swept over the falls. Despite the fact that there are well marked trails in many parts of the park, it is still the wilderness. People thinking that they are in an amusement park, with many layers of safety protocols in place, are more apt to hurt themselves. Backpacker.com calls the Mist Trail (which leads to the Half Dome trail) one of the 10 most dangerous hikes in America-- especially when it's raining and the rocks become slippery. So, please use caution.
The next 1.9 miles, if you choose to continue the hike (most people don't) will bring you to the top of Nevada Falls. The first half of the trail is very gradual, as it winds through the forest. You're then brought to another set of stairs. Although they're longer than the stairs at Vernal Falls, then don't seem as difficult. Possibly because the was more room to build these stairs and they aren't as steep. The view from the top of Nevada Falls is spectacular and, in my opinion, worth the trouble it takes to get there.
At this point, you're only .9 miles from Little Yosemite Valley. It's a relatively easy hike, if you have the time and energy.
Most people will take the John Muir Trail back down from the top of Nevada Falls. It's a gradual path (although a bit steep in parts) with no stairs. It's a bit longer, but not much, and offers a great view of Nevada Falls and the back of Half Dome.
